Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Orioles 1, A's 0 (night game) / Orioles 6, A's 4 at Baltimore (night game):
After Pat Dobson gained his 11th straight victory, winning the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 1-0, Brooks Robinson stepped into the hero's role for the Orioles by smashing a two-run homer in the ninth inning to beat the Athletics in the nightcap, 6-4. Dobson gained his edge in a four-hit duel with Catfish Hunter when the Orioles scored in the fifth inning on a single by Merv Rettenmund, his theft of second and a double by Clay Dalrymple. In the nightcap, Rettenmund singled to drive in two of the Orioles' four runs in the second inning. The A's rallied with the aid of a two-run single by Bert Campaneris to tie the score in the seventh. In the ninth, two were out when Boog Powell doubled and Robinson hit his winning homer.

White Sox 9, Yankees 6 at Chicago (night game):
With two out in the 12th inning, Bill Melton smashed a three-run homer to give the White Sox a 9-6 victory over the Yankees, who were stopped on their five-game winning streak. Melton's blow more than made up for the third baseman's error that permitted the Yankees to go ahead in the top half of the 12th, 6-5. In the home half, Rich Morales walked, took second on a sacrifice and counted the tying run on a double by Pat Kelly. After Rick Reichardt grounded out, the Yankees walked Carlos May intentionally, but Melton wrecked the move with his homer.

Indians 4, Angels 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Sam McDowell, who had a 15-4 record at this time last year, gained his 10th victory of the current season against 10 defeats when the Indians nipped the Angels, 4-3. After Ken McMullen hit a two-run homer to give the Angels a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning, the Indians bounced back for three runs in their half. Walks to Ken Suarez and Ted Uhlaender, around a passed ball and sacrifice, set the stage for the first run when Sandy Alomar booted a grounder by Eddie Leon. Vada Pinson singled, scoring Uhlaender. Leon took third and counted the deciding run on a sacrifice fly by Graig Nettles. Jim Spencer homered for the Angels in the seventh.

Tigers 5, Royals 4 at Detroit (night game):
Mickey Lolich gained his 16th victory when the Tigers defeated the Royals, 5-4, on a walk to Aurelio Rodriguez with the bases loaded in the 11th inning. While Lolich hurled the route, the Royals used seven pitchers. In the 11th, Jim Price singled for the Tigers and pinch-runner Tony Taylor was bunted to second by Ed Brinkman. Dalton Jones batted for Lolich and drew an intentional pass. After a wild pitch advanced the runners, Dick McAuliffe also was passed intentionally. Rodriguez then drew a walk from Jim York, forcing in the Tigers' winning run.

[DH] Red Sox 4, Brewers 3 (night game) / Brewers 5, Red Sox 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Red Sox rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to win the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 4-3, but the Brewers snapped their five-game losing streak in the nightcap with a 5-1 victory behind the pitching of Bill Parsons. Bill Voss and Paul Ratliff homered to produce the Brewers' tallies in the lidlifter. The Red Sox began their rally in the eighth with singles by Duane Josephson, Mike Fiore and John Kennedy, loading the bases. After one run scored on a grounder by Luis Aparicio, Ken Sanders, in relief of Skip Lockwood, passed the next two batters to force in another run before Rico Petrocelli came to the plate and singled to drive in the tying and winning tallies.

Twins 4, Senators 2 at Minnesota (night game):
The Twins rallied to tie the score at 1-1 in the seventh inning and at 2-2 in the eighth before Harmon Killebrew singled in the ninth and Tony Oliva homered to beat the Senators, 4-2.

Dodgers 8, Pirates 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
Bill Buckner hit the first grand-slam homer of his major league career as the Dodgers exploded for six runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Pirates, 8-5. Mudcat Grant served up the pitch to Buckner, but Dock Ellis drew the loss, ending his 13-game winning streak. The Dodgers loaded the bases in the seventh, but Ellis had two out before Tom Haller and Maury Wills each hit run-scoring singles. Grant then relieved and was greeted with Buckner's blast, the first grand slam by any Dodger batter this season.

Expos 6, Cubs 1 at Montreal (night game):
Ernie McAnally allowed only five hits and pitched the Expos to a 6-1 victory over the Cubs. The Expos' eight hits included a homer by Ron Fairly with a man on base in the fifth inning.

Mets 3, Cardinals 2 at New York (night game):
The Mets rallied for two runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Cardinals, 3-2. Tommie Agee singled and took third on a one-out single by Cleon Jones Don Hahn ran for Agee, who bruised his knee sliding, and scored the tying run on a single by Ed Kranepool. After Dave Marshall went out, Duffy Dyer lifted a pop fly that fell safe down the right field line and Jones scored from second base with the winning run.

[DH] Phillies 8, Astros 3 (night game) / Astros 5, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Utilityman Bobby Pfeil, pressed into service as a catcher because of injuries to Tim McCarver and Mike Ryan, hit the first two homers of his major league career to lead the Phillies to an 8-3 victory over the Astros in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader. However, the Phillies were silenced in the nightcap by Wade Blasingame, who yielded only four hits and pitched the Astros to a 5-1 victory, turning in his first complete game in 20 starts this season. In addition to Pfeil's pair, Willie Montanez and Deron Johnson also homered for the Phillies in the first game. The Astros had circuit clouts by Cesar Cedeno and Doug Rader to back Blasingame in the second game.

Reds 11, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
Five straight hits by McRae, who lashed a single, three doubles and a homer, highlighted the Reds' attack in an 11-3 victory over the Padres. The Reds' 17 hits also included two homers by Lee May and one by Johnny Bench. May drove in four runs.

Braves 4, Giants 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Juan Marichal, who had not been a winner since June 23, was knocked out in the seventh inning and suffered his third straight defeat when the Braves beat the Giants, 4-3. The Braves scored what proved to be the deciding run in the seventh on two singles, a walk and sacrifice fly by Earl Williams. Pat Jarvis, who started for the Braves, gave up only one run on a homer by Dick Dietz before being lifted in the eighth. The Giants' other runs came off Cecil Upshaw in the ninth on a single by Bobby Bonds and homer by Willie McCovey.
