Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 3, A's 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Brooks Robinson committed three errors in a game for the first time in his career, but Frank Robinson came to the rescue of his Oriole teammate and smashed a three-run homer in the ninth inning to beat the Athletics, 3-2. In the fifth inning, Blue Moon Odom drew a walk for the A's. Bert Campaneris beat out a grounder in the hole to Brooks Robinson, who threw wildly to first for an error, Odom reaching third and Campaneris going to second. George Hendrick then tapped a grounder to Robinson, who not only fumbled the ball but also threw wildly for two errors on one play as Odom and Campaneris scored. In the Orioles' ninth, Don Buford and Merv Rettenmund hit singles. Rollie Fingers replaced Odom and, on his first pitch, Frank Robinson swung for his homer.
White Sox 5, Yankees 4 at Chicago (night game):
The White Sox, after tying the score in the ninth inning, added another run on a throwing error by Horace Clarke to defeat the Yankees, 5-4. Ron Swoboda hit his first A. L. homer in the top half of the ninth to send the Yankees ahead, 4-3. Mike Andrews drew a walk to start the comeback by the White Sox. Lee Richard, running for Andrews, scored on singles by Pat Kelly and Carlos May. Luis Alvarado fouled out. Ed Herrmann then grounded to Gene Michael, who threw to Clarke, forcing May at second, but when Clarke uncorked a wild throw trying for a double play, Kelly rounded third and continued home to score the winning run.
Angels 5, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Two consecutive errors by Jack Heidemann enabled the Angels to take the lead with a pair of unearned runs en route to a 5-1 victory over the Indians. Heidemann booted successive grounders by Ken McMullen and John Stephenson in the fourth inning. After Stephenson was forced out by Jim Spencer, Roger Repoz singled McMullen home to tie the score at 1-1. A walk to Bruce Christensen loaded the bases. Rudy May forced Spencer at the plate, but Sandy Alomar singled to drive in Repoz with the Angels' go-ahead run.
Tigers 8, Royals 7 at Detroit (night game):
Homers by Gates Brown and Al Kaline, each with a man on base in the ninth inning, carried the Tigers to an 8-7 victory over the Royals. Dick McAuliffe hit a pinch-single off Ted Abernathy to start the Tigers' rally. Kevin Collins flied out, but Brown teed off for his homer. Dalton Jones walked and, after Jim York replaced Abernathy, Kaline connected for the circuit.
Brewers 5, Red Sox 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
Jim Slaton, the Brewers' rookie righthander, pitched a three-hitter for his third shutout of the season and defeated the Red Sox, 5-0. Slaton also rapped two of the Brewers' nine hits, including a single ahead of a homer by Tommy Harper in the eighth inning.
Senators 7, Twins 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Bill Gogolewski and Joe Grzenda combined on a four-hitter and pitched the Senators to a 7-1 victory over the Twins. Gogolewski allowed only one hit before rain forced a 26-minute delay in the seventh inning. The Twins then scored their run on a walk to Harmon Killebrew and one-out singles by Rich Reese and Leo Cardenas. Grzenda struck out two batters to end the inning and gave up just one the hit rest of the way. The Senators' scoring included a two-run double by Frank Howard.
Pirates 4, Dodgers 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Luke Walker pitched a four-hitter and Bob Robertson rapped his 20th homer of the season as the Pirates defeated the Dodgers, 4-0. In addition to his homer for the Pirates' first run in the second inning, Robertson also accounted for their last marker with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Cubs 10, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
Although tagged for 10 hits, Fergie Jenkins breezed to his 17th victory of the season as the Cubs defeated the Expos, 10-2. Jenkins joined in the Cubs' 15-hit attack with three singles, driving in two runs.
Cardinals 6, Mets 3 at New York (day game):
Steve Carlton, beaten by the Mets in three previous meetings this season, switched from a fastball to a curve for his main delivery and pitched the Cardinals to a 6-3 victory. The Cardinals' attack in support of their southpaw included a homer by Joe Torre with a man on base in the fifth inning and a solo shot by Jose Cruz in the eighth.
Astros 6, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Roger Metzger and Joe Morgan each rapped a triple and single to lead the Astros' 12-hit attack in a 6-3 victory over the Phillies.
Padres 4, Reds 2 at San Diego (night game):
Thanks to a three-run homer by Dave Campbell, Clay Kirby was able to pitch the Padres to a 4-2 victory over the Reds. Kirby allowed only four hits, but a double by Bernie Carbo and homer by Tony Perez gave the Reds a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. Bob Barton singled for the Padres in the fifth and was forced on a sacrifice attempt by Kirby. Enzo Hernandez walked and Campbell then clouted his homer off Ross Grimsley.
Giants 2, Braves 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Al Gallagher drove in two runs with a double and single to enable the Giants to defeat the Braves, 2-1. A walk to Felix Millan and singles by Oscar Brown and Earl Williams produced the Braves' tally in the fifth inning. Dick Dietz walked in the sixth and scored the Giants' tying run on an error and Gallagher's double. Dietz then doubled in the eighth and scored the deciding run on Gallagher's single.
