Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 1, Royals 0 at Baltimore (night game):
A homer by Frank Robinson for the Orioles' only hit off Dick Drago was enough to beat the Royals, 1-0, in a game stopped by rain after 4½ innings. Robinson's drive in the first was the 493rd of his career, tying him with Lou Gehrig for 11th place on the all-time homer list. Jim Palmer, who pitched for the Orioles, limited the Royals to a pair of singles.
White Sox 5, Red Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Starting with a two-run homer by Bill Melton in the first inning, the White Sox defeated the Red Sox, 5-1. After Melton's smash, Ed Herrmann drove in another run with a double in the first and the White Sox added their final tallies in the third, one of them scored by Melton, who reached base with a single. The Red Sox ended a string of 34 consecutive scoreless innings when Rico Petrocelli homered in the ninth.
Indians 4, A's 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Playing their first game under Johnny Lipon as new manager replacing Alvin Dark, the Indians turned back Vida Blue's bid for his 20th victory and beat the Athletics, 4-1. The Indians reached the A's southpaw for two runs in the second inning on singles by Chuck Hinton and Ray Fosse, a sacrifice by Ken Suarez and single by Jack Heidemann. Kurt Bevacqua and Heidemann singled in the fourth. Alan Foster sacrificed and Ted Uhlaender added the Indians' final pair with a single. Blue, who drew his fourth defeat, went out for a pinch-hitter in the seventh after the A's scored their only run on a homer by Dick Green.
Tigers 4, Angels 3 at Detroit (night game):
Tony Taylor drove in three runs with a pinch-double in the eighth inning to bring the Tigers a 4-3 victory over the Angels. The Tigers had a homer by Gates Brown but trailed, 3-1, going into the eighth when they started their rally with singles by Bill Freehan and Al Kaline. After Kevin Collins forced Kaline, Dick McAuliffe walked to load the bases. The Angels brought in lefthander Dave LaRoche as the replacement for Andy Messersmith to face Dalton Jones, but Taylor batted for Jones and delivered his double.
Senators 3, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
While each club collected only five hits, the Senators were able to score three runs in the first two innings and made them stand up for a 3-2 victory over the Brewers. Dave Nelson led off with a homer for the Nats and another run followed on two walks and a pair of infield outs. Another walk and singles by Nelson and Elliott Maddox produced what proved to be the deciding tally in the second inning.
Yankees 11, Twins 9 at Minnesota (night game):
The Yankees scored five runs on only one hit -- a bases-loaded double by Danny Cater -- to tie the score in the eighth inning and then added two runs in the ninth to beat the Twins, 11-9. Five walks and a wild pitch produced two tallies in the eighth before Cater capped the rally with a three-run double. In the ninth, Horace Clarke walked, took second on a sacrifice and counted the tie-breaking run on a single by Gene Michael. Thurman Munson doubled to drive in Michael with an extra marker.
Dodgers 8, Reds 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
A three-run homer by Tom Haller and three-run triple by Jim Lefebvre powered the Dodgers to an 8-2 victory over the Reds. Dick Allen also homered for the Dodgers' first run in the second inning. Allen, Willie Crawford and Lefebvre hit singles for another tally in the seventh before Haller smashed his homer. Lefebvre's triple in the eighth followed a single by Allen, double by Crawford and intentional pass to Wes Parker.
[DH] Expos 7, Astros 4 (night game) / Astros 6, Expos 5 at Montreal (night game):
A single by Jesus Alou in the 10th inning drove in the tie-breaking run and gave the Astros a 6-5 victory in the second game of a twi-night doubleheader after the Expos won the first game, 7-4. In the lidlifter, Bob Bailey hit two doubles for the Expos, each driving in a run, and Bobby Wine also accounted for two RBIs with a single and sacrifice fly, in addition to setting up another run with a sacrifice bunt. Alou and Doug Rader each homered with a man on base for the Astros. In the nightcap, the Astros' victory was delayed when Rusty Staub hit his second homer of the game to tie the score in the ninth inning. Cesar Geronimo singled for the Astros in the 10th and Jim Wynn sacrificed. Rader doubled, but Geronimo failed to advance past third. Following a walk to Denis Menke, Alou hit his single to plate the deciding run.
Mets 4, Cubs 0 at New York (night game):
Gary Gentry pitched a four-hitter and Tommie Agee, Wayne Garrett and Dave Marshall rapped doubles as the Mets defeated the Cubs, 4-0.
Cardinals 4, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Bob Gibson smashed a homer to provide his own winning run while pitching the Cardinals to a 4-3 victory over the Phillies in the first game of a scheduled twi-night doubleheader. The second game was rained out. Gibson's round-tripper in the seventh inning, following a circuit clout by Jose Cruz, put the Cardinals ahead, 4-1, and enabled Gibson to survive a two-run rally by the Phillies in the ninth.
Giants 5, Pirates 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Six consecutive singles in the sixth inning produced four runs and carried the Giants to a 5-2 victory over the Pirates. Gaylord Perry, Bobby Bonds and Tito Fuentes got the first three hits to load the bases. Willie Mays singled to drive in one run and Willie McCovey followed with a single to plate two tallies and kayo Bruce Kison. After Nelson Briles relieved, Ken Henderson singled for the fourth run of the frame. Willie Stargell hit his 34th homer for the Pirates.
Braves 3, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Bob Priddy doubled in the 10th inning to set up the tie-breaking run for the victory as the Braves defeated the Padres, 3-1. After Priddy's two-bagger, Oscar Brown ran for him and scored on a sacrifice fly by Felix Millan and single by Ralph Garr. Garr stole second and counted an insurance run on a single by Mike Lum.
