Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 7, Orioles 4 at Baltimore (night game):
The tremendous relief pitching of Bill Lee, who allowed only two hits in 8 1/3 innings, enabled the Red Sox to come from behind to defeat the Orioles, 7-4. The Orioles jumped on Luis Tiant for all their runs in the first inning on a homer by Boog Powell, two walks and another round-tripper by Davey Johnson. The Red Sox chipped away with three single runs before going ahead in the seventh when Doug Griffin singled and Reggie Smith and Carl Yastrzemski followed with consecutive homers.

Angels 3, Brewers 1 at California (night game):
Rudy May, winning for the fourth time in his last five decisions, allowed only four hits and pitched the Angels to a 3-1 victory over the Brewers. May held the Brewers hitless until one out in the seventh inning when Jose Cardenal, playing in his first game with the Brewers, singled, stole second and scored on a single by Roberto Pena. The Angels' seven hits in the game included a homer by Roger Repoz.

White Sox 7, Twins 5 at Chicago (night game):
Knocked down by the first pitch, Mike Andrews dug in on the next delivery by Jim Perry and smashed a three-run homer in the fifth inning to lead the White Sox to a 7-5 victory over the Twins. Perry failed for the seventh straight time in a bid for his 13th victory. The Twins' ace had six defeats and one no-decision since winning last on June 30.

Yankees 7, Indians 0 at Cleveland (night game):
Posting his first shutout of the season, Fritz Peterson allowed only four hits and pitched the Yankees to a 7-0 victory over the Indians. Horace Clarke had a great night defensively behind Peterson, handling six putouts and 10 assists.

Tigers 11, Senators 7 at Detroit (night game):
After failing to hold 5-0 and 7-2 leads, the Tigers came back to defeat the Senators, 11-7. The Tigers scored five runs in the first inning and made it 7-2 when Willie Horton homered with a man on base in the fourth. However, the Senators rallied to tie the score in the seventh on two walks, an infield out, single by Larry Biittner, another walk and a homer by Jeff Burroughs. In the Tigers' half, Mickey Stanley walked and Jim Northrup doubled to drive in the tie-breaking run. The Tigers added three runs in the eighth with the help of Horton's fourth hit of the game.

A's 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
A homer by Gene Tenace in the seventh inning provided the Athletics with their deciding run in a 2-1 victory over the Royals. Ed Kirkpatrick homered for the Royals' run in the third and the A's tied the score in the fourth when Reggie Jackson singled, took third on a single by Tommy Davis and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Sal Bando.

Astros 2, Cubs 1 at Houston (night game):
Don Wilson pitched a two-hitter and triumphed in a duel with Fergie Jenkins when the Astros defeated the Cubs, 2-1. The Astros scored their runs in the second inning on a single by Doug Rader, double by Denis Menke and single by Jesus Alou. Jim Hickman homered for the Cubs in the fourth.

Reds 4, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
Johnny Bench and Lee May combined to bat the Reds to a 4-2 victory over the Mets. Bench drove in the first two runs with a double in the first inning. After the Mets pulled even, May broke the tie with a homer in the ninth. Tony Perez followed with a triple and Bench singled for his third RBI of the game.

Phillies 4, Braves 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Back-to-back homers by Deron Johnson and Roger Freed in the fourth inning started the Phillies off to a 4-0 victory over the Braves. The Phillies added another run in that same stanza on a single by Don Money, his stolen base and another single by John Vukovich. Three singles and a sacrifice fly by Tim McCarver added the final tally in the seventh. Rick Wise posted the shutout, although tagged for 11 hits by the Braves.

Dodgers 5, Giants 4 at San Francisco (night game):
Three homers, the last by Steve Garvey with two men on base in the ninth inning, powered the Dodgers to a 5-4 victory over the Giants. Dick Allen homered for the Dodgers' first run in the fifth before the Giants ganged up for four runs in the seventh. Dick Dietz homered to tie the score and other tallies followed on singles by Ken Henderson and Chris Speier, a triple by Al Gallagher and single by John Cumberland. After Joe Ferguson homered for the Dodgers in the eighth, Willie Davis singled in the ninth to chase Cumberland. Jerry Johnson retired the next two batters and then southpaw Steve Hamilton came in to face lefthanded-hitting Willie Crawford. The move failed when Crawford singled and Garvey followed with his winning homer.

Cardinals 3, Padres 1 at St. Louis (night game):
After giving up a homer by Cito Gaston in the first inning, Steve Carlton bore down the rest of the way and pitched the Cardinals to a 3-1 victory over the Padres. The Cards tied the score in the second on a triple by Joe Torre and sacrifice fly by Ted Simmons. Matty Alou doubled in the fourth, stopped at third on a single by Simmons and counted the go-ahead run when Jim Beauchamp forced Simmons. A single by Lou Brock, his 36th stolen base of the season and single by Alou added the final run in the seventh.
