Today's scores and summaries:
Brewers 2, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Lew Krausse and Ken Sanders combined on a six-hitter and batterymate Paul Ratliff smashed a two-run homer as the Brewers defeated the Angels, 2-0. Loser Tom Murphy retired the first 12 batters before Jose Cardenal singled to open the fifth inning. Johnny Briggs flied out to deep right field, pointing the direction for Ratliff, who cleared the fence at that point with his homer.
Twins 4, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
Tony Oliva, who batted in two runs with a double in the eighth inning to tie the score, doubled again in the 10th to plate Rod Carew and give the Twins a 4-3 victory over the White Sox. Carew singled with one out and, after Harmon Killebrew struck out, scored easily from first base on Oliva's double.
Yankees 8, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
The Yankees exploded for eight runs in the second inning and defeated the Indians, 8-1, behind the five-hit hurling of Mike Kekich. Fourteen men went to the plate in the Yankees' biggest scoring stanza since August 12, 1969, when they also pushed across eight runs against the Twins. The shutout was the first for Kekich since August 4, 1968, when the lefthander was with the Dodgers.
Senators 4, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
Coming off the disabled list, Denny McLain gained his first victory since June 30 when the Senators rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Tigers, 4-2. Frank Howard homered in the third inning, but the Nats had only three other hits off Joe Niekro and trailed, 2-1, going into the ninth. Bernie Allen started the rally with a single and Tommy McCraw doubled. After Tom Timmerman replaced Niekro, Tim Cullen singled to score Allen. McCraw crossed the plate when Aurelio Rodriguez failed to handle a hot grounder by Jeff Burroughs. Fred Scherman took over for the Tigers and gave up a single by Dave Nelson, driving in Cullen.
A's 7, Royals 5 at Kansas City (night game):
Vida Blue failed in a bid for his 20th victory, but the Athletics rallied to defeat the Royals, 7-5, before a Kansas City record crowd of 35,623. Blue gave up nine hits and trailed, 5-2, before going out for a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning. Three of the Royals' runs came on a homer by Bob Oliver. The A's began their comeback with a two-run homer by Rick Monday in the seventh. Then, in the ninth, after Tommy Davis, Dick Green and Bert Campaneris hit singles to tie the score, Monday doubled to drive in the winning runs.
Cubs 5, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
The loser of four straight decisions in July, Bill Hands pitched the Cubs past the Astros, 5-0, for his first victory since June 29. Ron Santo, breaking an 0-12 slump, smashed a homer in the second inning to pin the defeat on Larry Dierker, who allowed only two other hits before leaving the game for a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning. The Cubs fell on reliever Fred Gladding for their remaining runs in the ninth.
Pirates 10, Expos 6 at Montreal (night game):
A six-run outburst in the eighth inning brought the Pirates a 10-6 victory over the Expos. Gene Alley touched off the uprising with his second homer of the game to tie the score at 5-5. Two walks around an error then loaded the bases and Manny Sanguillen cleared them with a triple. After another walk, Vic Davalillo doubled to drive in the final two runs.
[DH] Reds 5, Mets 2 (night game) / Mets 9, Reds 4 at New York (night game):
A three-run homer by Tony Perez in the sixth inning paced the Reds to a 5-2 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, but the Mets came back to win the second game, 9-4. The Reds, held to one hit by Nolan Ryan for the first five innings of the opener, erupted in the sixth and scored a run on a single by Pete Rose, pass to Bernie Carbo and single by Lee May before Perez pounded his homer. May added a homer in the eighth. The Mets pinned winless Jim Merritt with his 11th loss in the nightcap. Tim Foli drove in three runs with a pair of doubles.
Phillies 3, Braves 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
John Vukovich, who went into the game with a .161 batting average, doubled in the ninth inning for his second hit and second RBI of the game to enable the Phillies to defeat the Braves, 3-2. Willie Montanez homered for the Phils in the second and Hank Aaron tied the score with a circuit clout in the seventh. A double by Don Money and single by Vukovich put the Phils ahead again in their half of the seventh, but Earl Williams forged a new deadlock with a homer in the ninth. Roger Freed singled in the Phils' half and gave way to Larry Bowa, who raced home from first base on Vukovich's double.
Dodgers 9, Giants 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Staked to a four-run lead in the first inning, Doyle Alexander pitched the Dodgers to a 9-1 victory over the Giants. Manny Mota and Willie Davis singled to start the Dodgers rolling, Mota going to third and Davis taking second on the throw. After an intentional pass to Dick Allen loaded the bases, Jim Lefebvre lofted a sacrifice fly for the first run, Steve Garvey drove in two with a single and Joe Ferguson added a run with another single.
Padres 6, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Steve Arlin, who is a graduate of Ohio State's dental school, pitched a four-hitter for the Padres and extracted a 6-1 victory over the Cardinals. Arlin also drilled a sacrifice fly to produce one of the Padres' runs. Ollie Brown accounted for two RBIs with a pair of singles.
