Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 5, Tigers 4 at Boston (night game):
A five-run rally in the eighth inning brought the Red Sox a 5-4 victory over the Tigers. Doug Griffin ignited the outburst with a homer. After Luis Aparicio singled and Reggie Smith walked, Fred Scherman replaced Les Cain and struck out Carl Yastrzemski. A pass to Rico Petrocelli loaded the bases. George Scott doubled, driving in two runs. Billy Conigliaro tapped out, but Bob Montgomery doubled to drive in two more runs. Willie Horton accounted for all of the Tigers' tallies with a homer and two singles.
White Sox 1, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Wilbur Wood was the winner over Clyde Wright in a pitching duel when the White Sox scored in the seventh inning to edge the Angels, 1-0. The run was set up with one away when Bill Melton singled. Rick Reichardt, after forcing Melton, stole second. Mike Andrews walked, bringing up Tom Egan, who rapped a single to drive in Reichardt with the game's lone run.
Royals 7, Twins 4 at Kansas City (night game):
A bases-loaded double by Amos Otis in the seventh inning propelled the Royals to a 7-4 victory over the Twins. The Royals were losing, 4-3, when Bobby Knoop led off the seventh with a pinch-triple to kayo Tom Hall. Stan Williams, in relief, hit Freddie Patek with a pitch. After Patek stole second, Cookie Rojas was handed a walk to load the bases. Otis then cleared the sacks with his double and scored himself on a single by Chuck Harrison.
Yankees 5, Orioles 0 at New York (night game):
The Yankees jumped on Mike Cuellar for five runs in the seventh inning and defeated the Orioles, 5-0, behind the three-hit hurling of Mel Stottlemyre. The loss was the fourth in a row for the Cuellar. Thurman Munson and Bobby Murcer started the Yankees going with singles and Roy White walked to load the bases. Danny Cater singled, driving in two runs. A single by Ron Swoboda added a third tally. Cater held third while Swoboda moved to second on a bunt by Gene Michael. Stottlemyre then iced his victory with a two-run single.
A's 2, Brewers 1 at Oakland (night game):
A homer by Reggie Jackson after a pass to Rick Monday in the first inning was all that the Athletics needed to defeat the Brewers, 2-1. Dave May homered for the Brewers' run in the sixth.
Indians 7, Senators 1 at Washington (night game):
The Indians ended their six-game losing streak by defeating the Senators, 7-1. Vince Colbert, a graduate of the high school across the street from RFK Stadium, was the winner, pitching eight innings and allowing only six hits. The Indians put the game away with five runs in a fifth-inning outburst that included doubles by Ted Uhlaender, Vada Pinson, Chris Chambliss and Frank Baker.
Braves 2, Mets 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Breaking up a 17-inning game, Darrell Evans drove in Sonny Jackson with a single to give the Braves a 2-1 victory over the Mets in a four-hour, 23-minute marathon. The Braves scored their initial run in the third on singles by Marty Perez, Tom Kelley and Hank Aaron. The Mets' tally counted in the fifth on singles by Bob Aspromonte and Ken Harrelson around an infield out. Jackson singled in the 17th, took second on a sacrifice by Felix Millan and scored on Evans' hit. The Braves executed six double plays.
Cubs 3, Padres 0 at Chicago (day game):
Juan Pizarro, winning his second straight start since being elevated to the Cubs' rotation, allowed only one hit in a 3-0 victory over the Padres. Ollie Brown rapped a ground single between third and short in the fifth inning for the Padres' lone safety. Clay Kirby battled Pizarro in the scoreless duel until the Cubs broke through for their runs in the eighth inning. J.C. Martin singled and took second on a sacrifice. Don Kessinger was safe on an error by Garry Jestadt. Glenn Beckert tapped in front of the plate and was called out for interference with catcher Bob Barton. Kessinger stole second and scored along with Martin when Billy Williams singled. Williams then stole second and counted the final run on a single by Joe Pepitone.
Dodgers 3, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Bill Singer ended a personal four-game losing streak with his first victory since June 12 and posted his first shutout of the season, pitching the Dodgers past the Astros, 3-0. The Dodgers pinned the defeat on Jack Billingham with two runs in the fourth inning on a walk to Dick Allen, singles by Willie Crawford and Jim Lefebvre and a sacrifice fly by Steve Garvey.
Pirates 7, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
An extra-base attack that included homers by Willie Stargell, Jose Pagan and Al Oliver powered the Pirates to a 7-2 victory over the Expos. Gene Alley joined in the attack with two triples and Bruce Kison, who pitched the route, doubled for his first major league hit. However, the victory was costly for the Pirates. After his homer in the third inning, Jose Pagan came to bat again in the fifth and suffered a fracture of his left forearm when hit by a pitched ball.
Cardinals 3, Giants 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Two Latin Americans, Jose Cruz and Matty Alou, turned their bats on Caribbean rival Juan Marichal to lead the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over the Giants. Cruz, who comes from Puerto Rico, smashed a homer in the first inning. Alou, a Dominican countryman of Marichal, drove in a run with a single in the fourth and another with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
