Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 2, Red Sox 0 at Boston (night game):
The four-hit pitching of Joe Coleman and a two-run homer by Norm Cash proved the Tigers' winning combination in a 2-0 victory over the Red Sox. Cash connected for his homer off Ray Culp after a single by Willie Horton in the eighth inning.

Angels 2, Twins 0 at California (night game):
Returning to the mound with one day of rest after being knocked out by the White Sox in the second inning of his previous start, Andy Messersmith celebrated his 26th birthday by pitching the Angels to a 2-0 victory over the Twins. Messersmith allowed only three hits. The Angels beat Perry in the sixth inning when Ken McMullen singled and Roger Repoz smashed a homer.

Brewers 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Two sacrifice flies by Johnny Briggs accounted for the Brewers' scoring in a 2-1 victory over the Royals. Ron Theobald tripled and counted on Briggs' first fly in the fourth inning. The Royals tied the score in their half of the fourth and missed a chance to go ahead. Joe Keough singled and stopped at third on a double by Amos Otis, who overran second and was tagged out. Gail Hopkins drove in Keough with a single. In the ninth, Tommy Harper doubled for the Brewers, Theobald sacrificed and Briggs hit his second fly.

Yankees 12, Orioles 3 at New York (night game):
Pat Dobson's string of 12 straight victories was snapped by the Yankees, who kayoed the righthander in the fourth inning and defeated the Orioles, 12-3. Dobson had pitched nine consecutive complete games and extended his streak of scoreless pitching to 23 innings before the Yankees picked up a run in the second. Then, in the fourth, Bobby Murcer and Ron Blomberg singled and Felipe Alou hit a sacrifice fly to break a 1-1 tie. Horace Clarke, Gene Michael and Fritz Peterson followed with singles to chase Dobson. Danny Cater greeted Jackson with a triple to cap the outburst. Bobby Murcer hit a three-run homer off Grant Jackson in the sixth.

White Sox 7, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
The Athletics were stopped on their seven-game winning streak by Tom Bradley, who yielded only two hits and pitched the White Sox to a 7-0 victory. Mike Andrews hit a grand-slam homer when the White Sox broke the game apart with five runs in the sixth inning. A single by Walt Williams, a walk, infield out and intentional pass to Ed Herrmann preceded Andrews' blast off Blue Moon Odom.

Senators 7, Indians 3 at Washington (night game):
Bill Gogolewski turned in the first complete game of his major league career and pitched the Senators to a 7-3 victory over the Indians. Paul Casanova hit a two-run homer for the Senators in the second inning. After the Indians tied the score in the third, the Senators broke away with three runs in the fourth, one scoring on a single by Toby Harrah and two on a single by Dave Nelson.

Mets 9, Braves 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Tom Seaver struck out 11 and yielded only four hits in pitching the Mets to a 9-1 victory over the Braves. Doubles by Mike Lum and Darrell Evans accounted for the Braves' run in the first inning. Ken Singleton and Cleon Jones homered for the Mets.

Reds 9, Expos 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Reds smashed four homers and defeated the Expos, 9-1, behind the four-hit hurling of Don Gullett. George Foster connected for the circuit with two men on base, while Lee May, Johnny Bench and Tony Perez contributed solo swats to the attack.

Padres 4, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
A triple by Cito Gaston and single by Ollie Brown in the eighth inning supplied the run that enabled Dave Roberts to pitch the Padres to a 4-3 victory over the Astros. Roberts singled and scored the Padres' first run on a sacrifice and single by Gaston in the third. Ed Spiezio hit a two-run homer in the fourth. Doug Rader homered for one of the Astros' five hits off Roberts.

Phillies 3, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
After losing eight straight games over two seasons in Three Rivers Stadium, the Phillies beat the Pirates, 3-2, for their first victory in Pittsburgh's new park. The Phillies were trailing, 2-1, going into the eighth, but then shot ahead when Deron Johnson walked and Willie Montanez smashed a homer. Billy Wilson, who was the winner in relief, played third base for one batter in the Pirates' half of the eighth. Manager Frank Lucchesi brought in lefthander Joe Hoerner to face Willie Stargell and moved Wilson to third. Hoerner struck out Stargell and Wilson came back to the mound to finish the game.

Cardinals 12, Giants 8 at St. Louis (night game):
Eight consecutive singles led to nine runs in the fifth inning as the Cardinals defeated the Giants, 12-8, to complete the sweep of the three-game series. Jose Cruz, Dal Maxvill and pinch-hitter Ted Sizemore started the merry-go round with singles to load the bases. Lou Brock singled, driving in two runs and chasing John Cumberland. Julian Javier greeted Don McMahon with a single for two more tallies. Matty Alou beat out a bunt then Joe Torre singled for the fifth run of the frame. After Jerry Johnson relieved, Ted Simmons singled to load the bases. Ending the chain of singles, Bob Burda was hit by a pitch, forcing a run across the plate. Cruz struck out. Maxvill flied to Dave Kingman, who made a wild throw to the plate, allowing two runs to score. The Cardinals then added their ninth run on an error by Willie McCovey.
