Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 12, Tigers 11 at Boston (day game):
A pinch-single by Rico Petrocelli with two out in the ninth inning scored John Kennedy and gave the Red Sox a 12-11 victory in a slugfest with the Tigers, who lost although hitting six homers. Bill Freehan smashed three, Willie Horton hit two and Aurelio Rodriguez rapped one. The Red Sox had only one homer, but it was a grand slam by Bob Montgomery, the first of the catcher's major league career. Montgomery also drove in two runs with a double. Montgomery's slam followed a single by George Scott and two walks in the fourth. Four singles and a triple by Scott added four more runs before the stanza ended. The Tigers battled back and finally tied the score at 11-11 on Freehan's third homer of the game in the ninth. In the Red Sox' half, Billy Conigliaro singled, Kennedy doubled, but Conigliaro stumbled rounding third base and was thrown out trying to score. The Tigers passed Montgomery intentionally before Petrocelli batted for Sparky Lyle and delivered his winning hit.
Dodgers 6, Cardinals 5 at St. Louis (night game):
Before needing the help of Jim Brewer to nail down the victory, Al Downing drove in the deciding run with a single in the seventh inning to enable the Dodgers to defeat the Cardinals, 6-5. Wes Parker and Willie Davis each had four hits for the Dodgers, who beat Bob Gibson for the third time this season. Downing's victory, on the other hand, was his third over the Cardinals this year.
