Today's scores and summaries:
[DH] A's 6, Red Sox 5 (day game) / A's 7, Red Sox 5 at Boston (night game):
Playing separate-admission, day-night games, the Red Sox attracted a total of 54,206 paid, but disappointed the turnouts by losing to the Athletics, 6-5 and 7-5. Tommy Davis and Dick Green homered for the A's in the sunshine contest, while the Red Sox had a round-tripper by Joe Lahoud. With the score tied, 5-5, Reggie Jackson walked for the A's in the ninth inning and was forced by Davis. Sal Bando walked and Gene Tenace then singled to drive in Davis with the winning run. The A's stepped up their slugging in the night game with homers by Bando, Jackson and Dave Duncan. Mike Fiore and Reggie Smith connected for the Red Sox. Mudcat Grant, newly reacquired from the Pirates, saved the game for the A's, pitching the last 3 1/3 innings in relief of Blue Moon Odom and allowing only three hits and one run.
Indians 4, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Sam McDowell, back with the Indians after walking out in a contract dispute, allowed only four hits in six innings and gained a 4-1 victory over the White Sox.
Tigers 12, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Dick McAuliffe, Bill Freehan and Norm Cash drove in three runs apiece to power the Tigers to a 12-3 victory over the Brewers. McAuliffe got his RBIs with a homer, triple and single. After McAuliffe homered in the third inning to break a 1-1 tie, Freehan connected for the circuit with two men on base. Cash rapped a home run, a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly.
Orioles 4, Twins 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Harmon Killebrew hit the 500th and 501st homers of his career, but the Twins nevertheless lost to the Orioles, 4-3, in 10 innings. Killebrew became the 10th man in major league history to reach the 500 homer mark when the slugger connected off Mike Cuellar in the first inning. His second smash of the game came with a man on base in the sixth and tied the score at 3-3. Cuellar, who had lost four straight decisions, was able to gain his first win since July 8 when Merv Rettenmund homered for the Orioles in the 10th.
Angels 7, Yankees 6 at New York (night game):
Homers by Jim Spencer and Roger Repoz, good for three runs in the eighth inning, enabled the Angels to defeat the Yankees, 7-6. Spencer's homer broke a 4-4 tie. Jim Fregosi followed with a single to kayo Stan Bahnsen. After Lindy McDaniel relieved, Repoz rapped his round-tripper. The Yankees rallied for two runs in their half on a double by Roy White, triple by Danny Cater and an infield out, but Lloyd Allen saved the game for Clyde Wright.
[DH] Royals 9, Senators 2 (night game) / Royals 3, Senators 1 at Washington (night game):
Effective work by two starting-relieving combinations marked the Royals' 9-2 and 3-1 victories in their sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Senators. Al Fitzmorris pitched the first five innings of the opener, allowing five hits. Jim York yielded only one hit in the last four frames. Gail Hopkins hit a three-run homer in the first to start the Royals on the way to victory. In the nightcap, Mike Hedlund, who started, and Ted Abernathy, who finished, each gave up only two hits. The Royals broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh when Cookie Rojas singled, stole second and crossed the plate on a single by Lou Piniella.
Astros 3, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
After giving up two runs on three hits in the first inning, Ken Forsch yielded only one more safety the rest of the way and pitched the Astros to a 3-2 victory over the Reds. Pete Rose and Tony Perez doubled and Johnny Bench singled for the Reds' runs. The Astros tied the score in the third when Jesus Alou singled and Joe Morgan homered. Jack Hiatt walked in the seventh, Forsch sacrificed and Alou singled to drive in the winning run.
Dodgers 6, Phillies 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
With principal batting support from catcher Tom Haller, Bill Singer pitched the Dodgers to a 6-1 victory over the Phillies. Haller drove in the Dodgers' first run with a single in the second inning and then homered with a man on base in the fifth.
Cubs 2, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Continuing as the surprise of the Cubs' pitching staff, Juan Pizarro yielded only five hits and beat the Pirates, 2-1, for his third straight complete-game victory. Bob Robertson homered in the fourth inning for the only run off the veteran lefthander. The Cubs broke through for their runs off Bruce Kison in the seventh. Jim Hickman led off with a double, Ron Santo walked and Brock Davis was safe when his bunt was fumbled by Kison. J.C. Martin tied the score with a sacrifice fly. Santo, tagging up, advanced to third and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Pizarro.
Mets 6, Padres 4 at San Diego (night game):
The Mets jumped on Clay Kirby for four runs in the fourth inning and went on to defeat the Padres, 6-4. Wayne Garrett and Cleon Jones led off with singles. After Ed Kranepool forced Jones, Tommie Agee singled to drive in Garrett with the first earned run off Kirby in 25 innings. An infield hit by Ken Boswell counted Kranepool. Ken Singleton then doubled to drive in two runs. Gary Gentry, who started for the Mets, didn't benefit from the big lead, going out in the fifth inning. Tug McGraw in relief received credit for the victory after the Mets scored the deciding run in the sixth on a forceout by Jerry Grote with the bases loaded.
Giants 1, Expos 0 at San Francisco (night game):
Juan Marichal, helping his own cause with a double, pitched the Giants to a 1-0 victory over the Expos in a duel with Bill Stoneman. Al Gallagher singled with one out in the ninth inning and stopped at third on Marichal's double. After a pass to Bobby Bonds, the Expos set up a five-man infield, but Tito Fuentes hit a ground single to right to score pinch-runner Frank Duffy. Marichal, who yielded only two hits, ended a personal four-game losing streak with his first victory since June 23.
Braves 2, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
The Braves' pitching cousins, George Stone and Cecil Upshaw, combined to beat the Cardinals, 2-1, with the backing of four double plays. Stone, who was the winner, singled to drive in the Braves' first run in the fifth inning, tying the score at 1-1. Marty Perez singled in the seventh and when Stone bunted, Ted Kubiak, covering first, muffed the throw by Reggie Cleveland. Perez reached third on the error and scored what proved to be the winning run when Felix Millan hit a sacrifice fly.
