Today's scores and summaries:
A's 5, Red Sox 3 at Boston (night game):
With a helping hand from Darold Knowles in the 10th inning, Vida Blue gained his 21st victory when the Athletics defeated the Red Sox, 5-3. Blue was tagged for two homers. Doug Griffin connected with a man on base in the eighth and Rico Petrocelli tied the score with a solo swat in the ninth. Bert Campaneris singled for the A's in the 10th and went to second on a wild pitch. Joe Rudi walked. Reggie Jackson doubled, scoring Campaneris. After Rudi was out at the plate on a grounder by Mike Hegan, Jackson scored on a wild pitch. The Red Sox threatened in their half of the 10th when Griffin and Luis Aparicio led off with singles. Knowles put out the fire, getting Reggie Smith to ground into a double play and striking out Carl Yastrzemski.
Indians 3, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
After losing a 2-0 lead in the ninth inning, the Indians came back with a homer by Ray Fosse in the 12th to beat the White Sox, 3-2. Ted Uhlaender homered for the Indians' initial run in the first inning and scored again after hitting a double in the sixth. Two walks, a sacrifice and single by Rick Reichardt pushed over the White Sox' tying tallies in the ninth.
Tigers 2, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
A single by Jim Northrup with the bases loaded in the seventh inning drove in two runs and gave the Tigers a 2-1 victory over the Brewers. Skip Lockwood, pitching for the Brewers, staked himself to a 1-0 lead with a homer in the third before the Tigers beat him in the seventh on Northrup's hit after Gates Brown and Willie Horton singled and Bill Freehan walked to load the bases.
Orioles 9, Twins 6 at Minnesota (night game):
The Orioles came to life in the last three innings and scored seven runs to defeat the Twins, 9-6. Don Buford homered for the Orioles in the third, but the Twins held a 5-2 lead going into the seventh when Boog Powell hit for the circuit with two men on base to tie the score. After the Twins regained the lead in their half, the Orioles forged ahead in the eighth with two runs on a pass to Buford, double by Frank Robinson and single by Brooks Robinson. Merv Rettenmund iced the decision with a two-run double in the ninth.
Royals 1, Senators 0 at Washington (night game):
With Paul Splittorff pitching a one-hitter, the Royals gained a 1-0 victory over the Senators when rain stopped the first game of a scheduled twi-night doubleheader with two out in the top half of the sixth inning. The second game was postponed. The Royals scored their run off Bill Gogolewski in the first inning on a single by Joe Keough, double by Amos Otis and sacrifice fly by Cookie Rojas.
Reds 5, Astros 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Four unearned runs on as many errors enabled the Reds to defeat the Astros, 5-1, behind the three-hit pitching of Gary Nolan. The Astros scored in the second inning on a walk to Denis Menke and double by Jack Hiatt. The Reds, held to two hits by Jack Billingham in the first five innings, broke through for three runs in the sixth. Nolan and Pete Rose singled and both counted when Bob Watson threw wildly past third on a bunt by Hal McRae. After two out, McRae also scored when Billingham threw wildly on a grounder by George Foster. A single by Dave Concepcion, a hit batsman and two errors added a pair for the Reds in the seventh.
Dodgers 4, Phillies 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Doyle Alexander, who yielded only four hits and retired 18 straight batters at one stretch of his performance, pitched the Dodgers to a 4-1 victory over the Phillies. Bill Russell hit his first homer of the season to start the Dodgers' scoring in the first inning. The Phillies picked up their run on singles by Don Money and Ken Reynolds, around a walk, in the second. Steve Garvey singled and Bobby Valentine tripled to put the Dodgers ahead to stay in the fourth. Alexander, who rapped two singles, drove in an insurance run in the sixth.
Pirates 3, Cubs 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Dock Ellis, who had been ineffective since the All-Star Game, regained his winning form and yielded only five hits as the Pirates defeated the Cubs, 3-2. Eliis gave up a run in the second inning on a single by Ron Santo and double by J.C. Martin, but the Pirates tied the score against Fergie Jenkins in the fourth and went ahead in the fifth when Dave Cash tripled and Vic Davalillo hit a sacrifice fly. Jenkins was removed for a pinch-hitter in the eighth, ending his string of nine straight complete games. The Cubs rallied in the ninth and tied the score when Glenn Beckert and Joe Pepitone singled and Jim Hickman hit a sacrifice fly. In the Pirates' half, Davalillo doubled off Phil Regan with two out. Roberto Clemente walked. After a passed ball advanced the runners, Willie Stargell was handed an intentional walk. Richie Hebner rose to the opportunity and singled to drive in the winning run.
Padres 1, Mets 0 at San Diego (night game):
A wild throw by catcher Jerry Grote on an attempted double steal in the 12th inning enabled the Padres to defeat the Mets, 1-0. Dave Roberts hurled the route for the Padres, but Tom Seaver, who started for the Mets, went out for a pinch-hitter in the 11th. Danny Frisella was the loser in relief. Larry Stahl doubled for the Padres in the 12th and Nate Colbert drew an intentional pass. With Leron Lee at bat, the Mets were expecting a bunt, but Stahl and Colbert broke with the first pitch. Wayne Garrett, charging in from third base, could not get back to the bag in time and Grote's throw sailed over his head as Stahl raced home to score.
Expos 5, Giants 0 at San Francisco (day game):
Rusty Staub and Bobby Wine each drove in two runs and Steve Renko pitched a seven-hit shutout as the Expos defeated the Giants, 5-0. The Expos scored three of their runs in the third inning on singles by Ron Hunt and Ron Woods, a triple by Staub and sacrifice fly by Bob Bailey. A triple by John Bateman and single by Wine added a run in fourth. Wine then made it a big day for himself by hitting his first homer of the season in the ninth.
Braves 9, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Gil Garrido, playing second base in place of Felix Millan, drove in four runs to lead the Braves to a 9-3 victory over the Cardinals. Although rapping Tom Kelley for 11 hits and drawing seven walks in seven innings, the Cardinals could score only three runs. The Braves broke a 3-3 tie with five runs in the eighth inning. Sonny Jackson, Ralph Garr and Hank Aaron singled for the go-ahead tally. After two walks forced in another run, Garrido cleared the sacks with a double.
