Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 5, Red Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
After serving up a homer to Reggie Smith in the first inning, Dick Drago held the Red Sox scoreless the rest of the way with the aid of five double plays and pitched the Royals to a 5-1 victory. The complete game was the seventh straight for Drago. Lou Piniella led the Royals at bat, driving in three runs with a homer and single. Freddie Patek also contributed a homer to the Kaycee attack.

Orioles 12, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Back from the disabled list, Dave McNally made his first appearance since July 9 and gained the victory when the Orioles walloped the White Sox, 12-1. McNally worked six innings and allowed three hits before surrendering the mound to Dave Leonhard. Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson and Paul Blair drove in three runs apiece. Frank Robinson's RBIs came on the 494th homer of his career. The blow elevated the Orioles' veteran slugger to 11th place on the major league list of home-run hitters.

Brewers 9, Indians 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Three of Jim Slaton's teammates drove in two runs apiece to help the Brewers' rookie righthander defeat the Indians, 9-1. Johnny Briggs homered with a man on base in the first inning and Dave May drove in another run with a single. May added an RBI with a single in the third and Ellie Rodriguez batted in two with a double as the Brewers piled up five runs during the stanza.

Twins 4, Tigers 3 at Minnesota (night game):

Willie Horton homered for the Tigers, who took a 3-2 lead on a run-scoring double by Mickey Stanley in the ninth. In the Twins' half, a double by Holt, infield hit by Cesar Tovar and pass to Rod Carew filled the sacks before Killebrew rapped his winning single.

A's 5, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
Bert Campaneris rapped a double and two singles, scored one run and drove in two to lead the Athletics to a 5-2 victory over the Yankees. Curt Blefary homered against his former Yankee teammates. Chuck Dobson received credit for his 12th victory, but the A's used three relief pitchers before the game ended with the save going to Rollie Fingers.

Ernie Banks, pinch-hitting, then smashed a liner that bounced off Dave Concepcion's glove for an error, allowing James and Popovich to score. After retiring Don Kessinger to end the inning, Gullett was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the Reds' half of the eighth and Wayne Granger held the Cubs hitless in the ninth. Pete Rose collected four hits for the Reds and George Foster smashed a homer with two men on base.

The Cardinals scored an unearned run off Steve Blass on an error by Gene Alley in the second inning and added their other tally on singles by Ted Sizemore and Joe Torre around an infield out in the third.
