Royals 5, Red Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
After serving up a homer to Reggie Smith in the first inning, Dick Drago held the Red Sox scoreless the rest of the way with the aid of five double plays and pitched the Royals to a 5-1 victory. The complete game was the seventh straight for Drago. Lou Piniella led the Royals at bat, driving in three runs with a homer and single. Freddie Patek also contributed a homer to the Kaycee attack.
Orioles 12, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Back from the disabled list, Dave McNally made his first appearance since July 9 and gained the victory when the Orioles walloped the White Sox, 12-1. McNally worked six innings and allowed three hits before surrendering the mound to Dave Leonhard. Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson and Paul Blair drove in three runs apiece. Frank Robinson's RBIs came on the 494th homer of his career. The blow elevated the Orioles' veteran slugger to 11th place on the major league list of home-run hitters.
Brewers 9, Indians 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Three of Jim Slaton's teammates drove in two runs apiece to help the Brewers' rookie righthander defeat the Indians, 9-1. Johnny Briggs homered with a man on base in the first inning and Dave May drove in another run with a single. May added an RBI with a single in the third and Ellie Rodriguez batted in two with a double as the Brewers piled up five runs during the stanza.
Twins 4, Tigers 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Harmon Killebrew singled with the bases loaded in the ninth inning and drove in two runs to enable the Twins to defeat the Tigers, 4-3. Willie Horton homered for the Tigers, who took a 3-2 lead on a run-scoring double by Mickey Stanley in the ninth. In the Twins' half, a double by Holt, infield hit by Cesar Tovar and pass to Rod Carew filled the sacks before Killebrew rapped his winning single.
A's 5, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
Bert Campaneris rapped a double and two singles, scored one run and drove in two to lead the Athletics to a 5-2 victory over the Yankees. Curt Blefary homered against his former Yankee teammates. Chuck Dobson received credit for his 12th victory, but the A's used three relief pitchers before the game ended with the save going to Rollie Fingers.
Senators 4, Angels 0 at Washington (night game):
Staked to a three-run lead in the first inning, Denny McLain pitched the Senators to a 4-0 victory over the Angels. Tommy McCraw drew a walk from Andy Messersmith with the bases loaded to force in the first run and Dave Nelson followed with a two-run single. Tim Cullen drove in the Nats' other tally with a double in the fourth.
Astros 8, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Don Wilson doled out five hits and pitched the Astros to an 8-2 victory over the Braves. Cesar Cedeno homered with two men on base and Joe Morgan connected with one aboard to lead the Astros' attack. The Braves had homers by Earl Williams and Marty Perez to account for their scoring off Wilson.
Reds 8, Cubs 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Don Gullett pitched 7 1/3 innings of hitless ball before giving up a double by Cleo James as the Reds defeated the Cubs, 8-2. After James' double, Paul Popovich walked. Chris Cannizzaro popped up. Ernie Banks, pinch-hitting, then smashed a liner that bounced off Dave Concepcion's glove for an error, allowing James and Popovich to score. After retiring Don Kessinger to end the inning, Gullett was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the Reds' half of the eighth and Wayne Granger held the Cubs hitless in the ninth. Pete Rose collected four hits for the Reds and George Foster smashed a homer with two men on base.
Dodgers 2, Expos 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
On Friday the 13th, the Dodgers gained their 13th shutout victory of the season, beating the Expos, 2-0, behind the six-hit pitching of Don Sutton. The Dodgers scored both their runs in the fifth inning. Willie Crawford beat out an infield hit, took second on a sacrifice and counted on a double by Tom Haller. Bobby Valentine singled, Haller stopped at third and then scored when Sutton forced Valentine.
Cardinals 2, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Continuing their pursuit of the East division leaders, the Cardinals defeated the Pirates, 2-0, behind the four-hit hurling of Jerry Reuss. The Cardinals scored an unearned run off Steve Blass on an error by Gene Alley in the second inning and added their other tally on singles by Ted Sizemore and Joe Torre around an infield out in the third. Reuss ran into trouble when Manny Sanguillen and Bob Robertson singled with one out in the ninth, but the lefthander fanned Richie Hebner for the fourth straight time and also struck out Al Oliver to end the game.
Phillies 5, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Rick Wise gained his third straight victory and 12th of the season when the Phillies defeated the Padres, 5-2. With Ollie Brown hitting a homer, the Padres held a 2-1 lead before the Phils went ahead in the sixth inning. Larry Bowa beat out an infield hit and scored on a double by Willie Montanez and an error by Brown on the play. The Phillies then loaded the bases and picked up the leading run on a pass to Mike Ryan. Deron Johnson iced the victory with a two-run homer in the seventh.
Giants 7, Mets 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Sparked by Willie Mays, who hit a single, double and triple before leaving the game after five innings, the Giants defeated the Mets, 7-3. Mays drove in a run with his double in the fourth, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dave Kingman. Dick Dietz homered to add two more runs. In the fifth, Mays tripled and counted on another sacrifice fly by Kingman. Al Gallagher homered for the Giants in the eighth.
