Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 5, Red Sox 1 at Boston (day game):
With Paul Schaal driving in all their runs, the Royals gained a 5-1 victory to extend the losing streak of the Red Sox to seven games. It also was the ninth straight time that the Royals had defeated the Red Sox this season. Schaal tripled behind a walk to Ed Kirkpatrick in the fourth inning, homered with two men on base in the sixth and accounted for his fifth RBI of the game with a single in the eighth.

White Sox 2, Orioles 1 at Chicago (day game):
Wilbur Wood outpitched Pat Dobson and gained his 15th victory of the season as the White Sox edged the Orioles, 2-1. The White Sox scored their initial run in the first inning on a pass to Walt Williams, forceout by Jay Johnstone and triple by Bill Melton. The Orioles pulled even with two out in the fifth when Frank Robinson singled and scored from first base on a double by Boog Powell. Johnstone doubled in the sixth and scored the deciding run on a single by Steve Huntz.

Brewers 4, Indians 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
Virtually a one-man fire corps, Ken Sanders gained his 20th save when the Brewers defeated the Indians, 4-2. The rest of the Brewers' bullpen had only one save all season. With the score tied, 2-2, the Brewers loaded the bases in the sixth inning on a walk to Andy Kosco, double by Bobby Mitchell and intentional pass to Ellie Rodriguez. Bob Heise then forced Rodriguez while Kosco raced home with the tie-breaking run.

Tigers 7, Twins 5 at Minnesota (day game):
Gates Brown drove in four runs with a triple and homer to lead the Tigers to a 7-5 victory over the Twins. Brown's triple followed a walk to Jim Northrup in the fifth inning. The Tigers then erupted for five runs in the sixth. Northrup singled with the bases loaded to plate two runs and Brown accounted for three others with his homer.

A's 6, Yankees 4 at New York (day game):
Vida Blue scored the tie-breaking run on a wild pitch and gained his 22nd victory as the Athletics defeated the Yankees, 6-4. The southpaw gave up 10 hits, the most he had ever yielded in a game, and had to struggle for his triumph. The Yankees loaded the bases on two hits and a walk in the seventh inning and took a 4-2 lead on successive pinch-doubles by John Ellis and Ron Hansen. The A's came back to win with four runs in the eighth. Dave Duncan and Dick Green singled and Blue beat out a bunt for the second time in the game to load the bases. Bert Campaneris singled, driving in two runs to tie the score. Lindy McDaniel, replacing Jack Aker, walked Joe Rudi to load the bases and struck out Reggie Jackson, but then uncorked a wild pitch to allow Blue to score. Angel Mangual added an extra run with a squeeze bunt.

Angels 4, Senators 3 at Washington (day game):
Hot-footing to first base, Billy Cowan prevented a double play on a grounder with the bases loaded in the 10th inning to enable the Angels to defeat the Senators, 4-3. Mickey Rivers hit his first major league homer for the Angels in the opening frame. Sandy Alomar opened the 10th with a single and Rivers beat out a bunt. After a sacrifice by Ken Berry, John Stephenson was handed a walk to load the bases. Cowan grounded to Tim Cullen for a forceout of Stephenson at second but beat Lenny Randle's relay to first as Alomar scored.

Astros 5, Braves 4 at Atlanta (day game):
A single by Jim Wynn with two out in the eighth inning drove in two runs and brought the Astros a 5-4 victory over the Braves. Doug Rader hit a two-run homer for the Astros in the second, but round-trippers by Hank Aaron and Earl Williams helped the Braves forge ahead, 4-2. The first of two doubles by Denis Menke led to an Astro tally that narrowed the gap in the seventh. Bob Watson singled in the eighth, Menke hit his second double and Wynn then singled to drive in the tying and winning runs.

Reds 5, Cubs 1 at Cincinnati (day game):
The four-hit pitching of Ross Grimsley and homers by Hal McRae and Johnny Bench featured the Reds' 5-1 victory over the Cubs. McRae rapped his round-tripper in the first inning. After the Reds picked up unearned runs in the third and fourth, Bench hit his homer in the sixth. Singles by Grimsley and Pete Rose around a passed ball wrapped up the scoring against Juan Pizarro in the seventh.

Expos 6, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (day game):
Gary Sutherland batted in three runs with a single and homer to provide the Expos' margin in a 6-3 victory over the Dodgers. Jim Fairey, Boots Day and Rusty Staub singled off Bill Singer to open the game and Ron Fairly walked to force in the first run. After Bob Bailey struck out, Sutherland drove in two tallies with a single. Bobby Wine doubled and Fairey singled to add a run in the fourth. Bailey homered in the fifth and Sutherland hit for the circuit in the eighth.

Cardinals 6, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Turning against his former teammates, Matty Alou homered with two men on base in the eighth inning to cap a five-run rally as the Cardinals completed the sweep of a four-game series by defeating the Pirates, 6-4. Ted Simmons and Joe Hague singled with one out to start the Cards' comeback, kayoing Bruce Kison. After Bob Miller relieved, Ted Kubiak singled to load the bases. With two out, pinch-hitter Jerry McNertney singled, driving in two runs, and Alou followed with his winning homer. Hague also had a homer in the game for the Cardinals, while Willie Stargell smashed two for the Pirates.

[DH] Padres 5, Phillies 4 (day game) / Padres 3, Phillies 2 at San Diego (day game):
A two-run single by Nate Colbert in the first game and three-run homer by Larry Stahl in the second game were the decisive blows as the Padres swept over the Phillies in a doubleheader, 5-4 and 3-2. With the Phillies ahead in the opener, 4-3, Enzo Hernandez and Angel Bravo drew walks in the ninth inning and Cito Gaston beat out an infield hit before Colbert came to the plate and singled to drive in the tying and winning runs. Stahl hit his homer in the third inning of the nightcap to provide the runs that Dave Roberts needed to gain his victory over Barry Lersch.

Giants 6, Mets 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Homers by Bobby Bonds and Willie Mays provided the batting support for Juan Marichal, who yielded only five hits and pitched the Giants to a 6-1 victory over the Mets. Bonds belted his homer after a pass to Mays in the first inning. The Giants broke the tight game apart with four runs in the seventh. After one run scored on singles by Al Gallagher, Ken Henderson and Tito Fuentes, Mays hit his first homer since July 18.
