Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 4, Red Sox 3 at Boston (night game):
Relief specialist Ken Tatum, coming out of the bullpen for his first major league start, got a rude greeting from his former Angel teammates, who knocked him out while scoring all their runs in the first inning to defeat the Red Sox, 4-3. Sandy Alomar singled, Tony Gonzalez doubled with one out and Ken McMullen walked to load the bases. Jim Spencer cleared the sacks with a double and then scored himself on a single by Jim Fregosi and an error on the hit by Joe Lahoud in left field.

[DH] White Sox 6, Tigers 5 (night game) / White Sox 4, Tigers 1 at Chicago (night game):
Steve Huntz hammered two homers in the first game and Walt Williams and Mike Andrews hit for the circuit in the second game to power the White Sox to a sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Tigers, 6-5 and 4-1. The Tigers built up a 5-0 lead in the lidlifter before the White Sox came back with a pair in the third. Huntz hit his first homer of the game in the sixth. Then, in the eighth, after Bill Melton and Rick Reichardt singled, Huntz homered again to turn back Mickey Lolich's bid for his 20th victory. In the nightcap, Williams rapped his round-tripper in the fourth inning. After Huntz doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, Jay Johnstone walked in the eighth and Andrews hit his homer.

Orioles 3, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Boog Powell marked his 30th birthday by hitting a two-run homer in the eighth inning and Elrod Hendricks followed with a circuit clout in the ninth to carry the Orioles to a 3-2 victory over the Brewers. Powell had been hitless in 14 times at bat against the Brewers this season before he smashed his homer following a safe bunt by Paul Blair.

Indians 3, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
A homer by Vada Pinson in the eighth inning enabled the Indians to defeat the Twins, 3-2. Pinson also drove in the Tribe's first run with a sacrifice fly in the third following a triple by Ted Uhlaender. Singles by Eddie Leon and Fred Stanley, around a sacrifice, added a run in the fourth before the Twins picked up their pair in the fifth when Cesar Tovar doubled with the bases loaded.

[DH] Yankees 2, Royals 0 (day game) / Yankees 8, Royals 5 at New York (day game):
After winning the first game, 2-0, behind Fritz Peterson, the Yankees exploded for five runs in the seventh inning of the second game and completed the sweep of a doubleheader with an 8-5 victory over the Royals. Peterson, who yielded five singles, turned in his second straight shutout and seventh consecutive complete game. The Yankees scored on singles by Roy White and Danny Cater, around a grounder, in the second inning and added the other run on a double by Horace Clarke and single by Thurman Munson in the third. The Yankees were held to only two hits by Lance Clemons in the nightcap and were trailing, 4-1, before they erupted in the seventh inning. A single by Ron Swoboda and pinch-homer by Felipe Alou ignited the rally. After Gene Michael singled, Ted Abernathy relieved and passed Munson. The Royals then brought in Tom Burgmeier to face Bobby Murcer, who wrecked the move by smashing a three-run homer.

Senators 8, A's 1 at Washington (night game):
Swinging away at his former teammates, Don Mincher drove in four runs with a homer and single to lead the Senators to an 8-1 victory over the Athletics. Mincher hit his homer with a man on base in the first inning and batted in his two other runs with a single in the sixth. In between, Mincher was aboard with a walk when Frank Howard homered in the fifth.

Braves 5, Cubs 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Pinch-hitter Zoilo Versalles, swinging at the first pitch thrown to him by Ray Newman, connected for a homer in the ninth inning to give the Braves a 5-4 victory over the Cubs. The Braves also had a homer earlier in the game by Earl Williams, while Ron Santo hit for the circuit with two men on base for the Cubs. Billy Williams had two hits and raised his major league career total to 2,000.

Reds 5, Cardinals 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
A comeback by Reds reached its climax in ninth inning when Johnny Bench belted a two-run homer to beat the Cardinals, 5-3. Joe Torre homered with a man on base to help the Cards take a 3-0 lead, but the Reds battled back to tie the score with the aid of a circuit clout by Hal McRae. Lee May singled with one away in the ninth and, after Tony Perez flied out, Bench broke up the game with his boundary belt.

Dodgers 4, Mets 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
A winner for the first time since July 19, Claude Osteen allowed only three hits and pitched the Dodgers to a 4-0 victory over the Mets. Osteen also drove in one run with a double in the second inning.

Astros 6, Pirates 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Astros rallied for five runs in the seventh inning, with the help of an error by Bill Mazeroski, and defeated the Pirates, 6-5. Two walks and a one-out single by Denis Menke produced the first run in the uprising, chasing Luke Walker. Bob Miller, in relief, yielded a run-scoring single by Jesus Alou. After Bob Veale took over, Joe Morgan grounded to Gene Alley, but Mazeroski dropped the throw to second, loading the bases. Dave Giusti became the Pirates' fourth pitcher of the inning. Cesar Cedeno greeted him with a two-run single and Doug Rader hit a sacrifice fly to add what proved to be the winning tally. Roberto Clemente drove in four runs for the Pirates with a single, homer and sacrifice fly. Mazeroski reached the 2,000 hit plateau with a double.

Expos 11, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Posting the first shutout of his major league career, Ernie McAnally pitched the Expos to an 11-0 victory over the Padres. McAnally yielded four hits while the Expos collected 12, including a bases-loaded triple by Bob Bailey in the fifth inning. Ron Hunt was hit by pitched balls twice and, after the second incident, the Expos' infielder engaged in a battle with catcher Bob Barton of the Padres, leading to Hunt's ejection from the game.

Giants 5, Phillies 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Gaylord Perry turned in his third straight complete-game victory, pitching a seven-hitter, as the Giants defeated the Phillies, 5-1. The Giants were held to six safeties, but scored three times in the first inning on only one hit -- a leadoff double by Ken Henderson. Tito Fuentes was hit by a pitch and Willie Mays walked to load the bases. Runs then crossed the plate on a forceout of Mays by Bobby Bonds, a sacrifice fly by Dave Kingman and a passed ball and two wild pitches.
