Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, Angels 3 at Boston (day game):
The Red Sox, who scored one unearned run but were held hitless by Clyde Wright for the first six innings, erupted against the lefthander in the seventh to defeat the Angels, 4-3. Reggie Smith singled for the first Red Sox hit and, when Rico Petrocelli grounded to Bruce Christiansen, Sandy Alomar dropped the throw to second and both runners were safe. George Scott beat out a bunt to load the bases and Phil Gagliano, playing left field in place of Carl Yastrzemski, doubled, driving in two runs to tie the score at 3-3. Luis Aparicio then batted for Jim Lonborg and beat out an infield hit, sending the deciding run across the plate.

White Sox 4, Tigers 2 at Chicago (night game):
Thanks to Bill Melton, who hit a two-run homer, Wilbur Wood was able to pitch the White Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Tigers. With the score tied, 1-1, Pat Kelly walked in the sixth inning and, on a run-and-hit play, scored from first base on a single by Mike Andrews and error by Willie Horton. Melton followed with his homer off Joe Coleman, who was stopped on his personal six-game winning streak.

Orioles 6, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
Bases-loaded hits by Elrod Hendricks and Davey Johnson were the key blows as the Orioles scored all their runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Brewers, 6-4. Merv Rettenmund started the uprising with a single, Paul Blair was safe on an error and Frank Robinson walked to load the bases. Hendricks singled to drive in two runs. Following a pass to Brooks Robinson that reloaded the sacks, Johnson batted in two runs with a double. After another walk to Mark Belanger, Brooks Robinson beat the throw home on a grounder by Mike Cuellar. An infield out by Rettenmund, up for a second time, plated the final tally.

Twins 4, Indians 2 at Minnesota (night game):
After waiting out a two-hour, nine-minute delay because of rain in the first inning, the Twins scored three runs in the second and went on to defeat the Indians, 4-2. Steve Braun walked and scored on singles by Jim Nettles and George Mitterwald, both of whom then crossed plate on a double by Cesar Tovar. Tony Oliva homered for the Twins' last run in the eighth.

Yankees 3, Royals 1 at New York (night game):
The four-hit pitching of Mel Stottlemyre and two-run double by Ron Blomberg combined to bring the Yankees a 3-1 victory over the Royals. With the score tied, 1-1, Jake Gibbs singled in the sixth inning, Bobby Murcer walked and, with two out, Blomberg belted his decisive two-bagger.

Senators 10, A's 3 at Washington (night game):
Exploding with an extra-base attack, the Senators scored seven runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Athletics, 10-3. Dave Nelson doubled, Don Mincher walked and Frank Howard doubled for the first run to break a 3-3 tie. After Bernie Allen walked to load the bases, Jeff Burroughs drove in two runs with a single, Paul Casanova doubled to produce another run and Tim Cullen tripled to add the fifth and sixth markers. Cullen scored the seventh run on an infield out by Pete Broberg. Nelson, up for a second time, hit a triple but was stranded as the outburst ended.

Cubs 7, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Milt Pappas, appearing against his former club for the first time since being traded June 25, 1970, pitched the Cubs to a 7-2 victory over the Braves. Johnny Callison, batting only .195, clinched the decision for Pappas with a grand slam. Homers by Billy Williams for the Cubs and Earl Williams for the Braves helped bring a 2-2 tie before the Cubs broke away in the eighth inning. After a single by Cleo James with the bases loaded drove in the tie-breaking tally, Callison connected for the Cubs' first grand slam of the season.

Reds 5, Cardinals 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Making his first start since his no-hitter, Bob Gibson didn't have it and was rapped for 11 hits by the Reds, who defeated the Cardinals, 5-0. Bernie Carbo homered in the third inning. The Reds tacked on their remaining runs in the fifth. Pete Rose was hit by a pitch, Lee May walked and Tony Perez singled to score Rose. A wild throw by Joe Torre on an infield hit by Johnny Bench allowed May to score. George Foster then tripled to drive in the last two runs.

Mets 3, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Tommie Agee doubled and Ken Singleton singled for a run in the 10th inning to give the Mets a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers. Cleon Jones drove in the Mets' first two runs with a triple in the third. The Dodgers tied the score in the eighth on singles by Duke Sims and Bill Sudakis, a double by Maury Wills and infield out by Manny Mota.

Pirates 3, Astros 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Milt May not only joined Bob Robertson in a homer act, but the Pirates' second-string catcher also singled with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to defeat the Astros, 3-2. Robertson connected in the second inning and May in the fourth. After the Astros rallied to tie the score, Willie Stargell doubled in the ninth and gave way to Gene Clines. An intentional walk to Manny Sanguillen, batting for Richie Hebner, and another pass to Robertson loaded the bases and set the stage for May's winning hit.

Giants 7, Phillies 0 at San Francisco (day game):
The Giants used two catchers, Dick Dietz and Russ Gibson, and each smashed a homer in support of John Cumberland, who beat the Phillies, 7-0, for his first victory since July 8. Dietz homered after Willie McCovey was safe on an error in the second inning. Tito Fuentes and McCovey were on base with walks when Gibson connected for the circuit in the seventh.

Expos 4, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
Coco Laboy, batting for Carl Morton, enabled the Expos to pick up a victory by driving in two runs with a single in the seventh inning to defeat the Padres, 4-3. John Bateman opened the seventh with a single and Stan Swanson ran for him. Ron Fairly walked and, after a sacrifice by Ron Brand, Laboy came through with his hit. As a result, Morton received credit for his first victory since July 7, ending a personal four-game losing streak.
