Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, Twins 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Andy Etchebarren knocked in two runs with a homer in the second inning and Don Buford added a pair with a double in the seventh to account for the Orioles' scoring in a 4-1 victory over the Twins. Jim Palmer yielded the Twins' run on three singles in the second, but yielded only four other hits in going the route for the 15th time this season.

Angels 2, Yankees 1 at California (night game):
A bases-loaded single by Ken McMullen with two out in the 13th inning scored Sandy Alomar and gave the Angels a 2-1 victory over the Yankees. A single by Jerry Kenney and double by Bobby Murcer produced the Yankees' run in the first, but they collected only four more hits over the balance of the game. The Angels tied the score in the second. Jim Fregosi singled, took third on a single by Jim Spencer and crossed the plate on McMullen's groundout. A succession of goose eggs thereafter finally ended in the 13th. Alomar singled, Mickey Rivers sacrificed and Fregosi drew an intentional walk with two away. When Al Closter also passed Spencer to load the bases, Jack Aker relieved. McMullen hit his single on the first pitch.

Indians 9, White Sox 4 at Cleveland (day game):
Roy Foster hit the first grand slam of his major league career for the Indians' most potent blow in a 9-4 victory over the White Sox, who were halted on their six-game winning streak. Ted Uhlaender and Vada Pinson singled for the Indians in the first inning, but Uhlaender was out trying to score on a single by Ray Fosse. Graig Nettles then walked to load the bases, setting the stage for Foster's slam. As it turned out, that would have not been enough to win, but the Indians added an unearned run in the second and clinched their victory when Chris Chambliss homered with two men on base in the third.

Tigers 7, Brewers 2 at Detroit (day game):
Mickey Lolich became a 20-game winner for the first time in his career when the Tigers' southpaw defeated the Brewers, 7-2. This is Lolich's 13th season in O. B. and ninth year with the Tigers. Andy Kosco accounted for the Brewers' runs with a homer in the first inning, but the Tigers took command with four runs in the third on a triple by Aurelio Rodriguez, single by Ed Brinkman, pass to Lolich and homer by Dick McAuliffe.

Royals 8, Senators 5 at Kansas City (night game):
Lou Piniella batted in three runs with a single and double as the Royals concentrated their attack in the fifth and sixth innings to defeat the Senators, 8-5. The Royals snapped a five-game losing streak, while the Senators were stopped on their string of four victories. Piniella's single drove in two of the Royals' five runs in the fifth and his double accounted for one of three tallies in the sixth. Bob Oliver had a run-scoring single in each stanza.

A's 4, Red Sox 1 at Oakland (day game):
Two homers by Reggie Jackson and one by Angel Mangual powered the Athletics to a 4-1 victory over the Red Sox behind the four-hit pitching of Catfish Hunter.

Braves 8, Cardinals 5 at Atlanta (night game):
Hank Aaron overpowered the Cardinals, smashing two homers plus a single, and driving in six of the Braves' runs in an 8-5 victory. Aaron drove in the Braves' first run with a single in the fourth inning and tied the score at 3-3 with a two-run homer in the sixth. The Braves then erupted for five runs in the seventh, the last three scoring on Aaron's second homer of the game and 627th of his career.

Astros 3, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
A winner for the first time since July 18, Jack Billingham pitched the Astros to a 3-0 victory over the Cubs. Billingham had a perfect game in the works for the first six innings before Don Kessinger spoiled his efforts with a single. The Astros jumped on Bill Hands for two runs in the third on a homer by Jack Hiatt and triples by Roger Metzger and Joe Morgan. Singles by Cesar Cedeno and Rich Chiles, around an infield out, added the other run in the ninth.

Reds 6, Pirates 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
Jim Merritt ended his personal 11-game losing streak by coming out of the bullpen and pitching magnificently to receive credit for the Reds' 6-3 victory over the Pirates. The lefthander took over for Wayne Simpson with two out in the fourth inning and limited the Pirates to three hits the rest of the way. The Pirates were winning, 3-1, when Merritt arrived, but Johnny Bench got one run back with a homer in the fourth and the Reds then exploded for four runs in the sixth. Lee May, Tony Perez and Bench singled to load the bases and George Foster cleared the sacks with a triple. Foster also scored on an infield out by Dave Concepcion. With his victory, Merritt stopped one game short of the N. L. record of 12 consecutive pitching losses.

Expos 4, Giants 3 at Montreal (night game):
The Expos broke their club record for most consecutive games won by beating the Giants, 4-3, in 10 innings, for their fifth straight victory. Mike Marshall, who gained the decision in relief of Steve Renko, singled in the 10th, stopped at second on a single by Boots Day and crossed the plate with the winning run on a single by Rusty Staub.

Mets 2, Padres 1 at New York (night game):
In a duel between the league leaders in earned-run average, Tom Seaver triumphed over Dave Roberts when Cleon Jones homered with two out in the ninth inning to give the Mets a 2-1 victory over the Padres. Seaver extended his Mets' club record scoreless streak to 31 innings before Ed Spiezio homered for the Padres in the fifth. A triple by Jones and sacrifice fly by Tommie Agee produced the Mets' tying tally in the seventh.

Phillies 3, Dodgers 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Woodie Fryman, who has been effective as a starter since returning from the Phillies' bullpen, scattered five hits and shut out the Dodgers, 3-0. The victory was his ninth, including six as a starter, since June 20. In that stretch, he had lost once. The Phillies sent him on his way to today's decision with two runs in the second inning on a single by Deron Johnson, a walk to Ron Stone, double by Don Money and sacrifice fly by Oscar Gamble. That was enough to pin Bill Singer with his 15th defeat of the season, although the Dodgers' starter allowed only three hits in a four-inning stint. The Phillies added their other run off Joe Moeller in the eighth when Willie Montanez and Johnson doubled.
