Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 6, Twins 3 at Baltimore (night game):
The Orioles hit four homers and beat the Twins, 6-3, to give Dave McNally credit for his 15th victory. Don Buford started the Orioles' slugging in the fifth inning to snap a 1-1 tie. Davey Johnson homered in the sixth, Paul Blair connected with a man on base in the seventh and Andy Etchebarren added a circuit clout in the eighth. McNally was
lifted after Rod Carew slammed a two-run shot in the Twins' half of the eighth and Eddie Watt finished.
Angels 3, Yankees 0 at California (day game):
Fritz Peterson's streak of seven straight victories since June 28 came to an end when the Yankees were held to six hits by Andy Messersmith and lost to the Angels, 3-0. Jim Spencer homered in the second to snap Peterson's string of 19 scoreless innings. Spencer drove in another run with a single in the sixth and Roger Repoz added the final tally with a homer off reliever Roger Hambright in the eighth.
White Sox 5, Indians 3 at Cleveland (day game):
Homers by Pat Kelly, Carlos May and Mike Andrews, plus the relief help of Bart Johnson, enabled Wilbur Wood to gain his 17th victory as the White Sox defeated the Indians, 5-3. Wood gave up a homer by Roy Foster in the second inning and then was lifted in the sixth when the Indians scored their two other runs on singles by Kurt Bevacqua, Ted Uhlaender, Ray Fosse and Graig Nettles. Johnson allowed only one hit in the last 3 2/3 innings.
Brewers 2, Tigers 1 at Detroit (day game):
Snapping their string of 11 straight losses in Detroit going back to the 1970 season, the Brewers defeated the Tigers, 2-1. The Brewers were held to five hits, but scored once without the benefit of a safety in the first inning when Ron Theobald walked, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and counted on a sacrifice fly by Jose Cardenal. Gates Brown provided the Tigers' tally with a homer in the fourth. The Brewers posted the deciding run in the sixth. Tommy Harper doubled and stopped at third on a single by Theobald. When Cardenal grounded to Dick McAuliffe, Harper bluffed an attempt to score. McAuliffe threw home, but Harper returned to third and Cardenal was safe at first. Dave May then forced Cardenal as Harper scored.
Royals 4, Senators 1 at Kansas City (day game):
The Royals, who won 65 games in 1970 season, matched that total with a 4-1 victory over the Senators. The Royals scored their initial run with the aid of two stolen bases by Freddie Patek in the first inning and added their three other tallies in the fifth on a double by Patek, singles by Gail Hopkins and Lou Piniella and double by Bob Oliver. Jeff Burroughs saved the Senators from being shut out with a two-out homer in the ninth.
[DH] A's 9, Red Sox 3 (day game) / A's 2, Red Sox 1 at Oakland (day game):
An inside-the-park homer by Reggie Jackson in the ninth inning carried the Athletics to a 2-1 victory in a sweep of a doubleheader after Dave Duncan drove in four runs with a single, double and homer to help beat the Red Sox, 9-3. In the opener, Duncan drove in the A's first two runs with a bases-loaded single in the fourth. He also homered and added another RBI with a double when the A's erupted for seven runs in the seventh. Gary Peters, who is a good hitting pitcher, homered as a pinch-hitter for the Red Sox with a man on base in the eighth. In the nightcap, Bert Campaneris homered for the Athletics in the first inning and the Red Sox tied the score in the fifth on a walk to Bob Montgomery, sacrifice by Sonny Siebert and double by Luis Aparicio. With two out in the ninth, Jackson blasted a drive over the head of Billy Conigliaro in center field.
Cardinals 13, Braves 4 at Atlanta (day game):
Paced by Joe Torre and Lou Brock, the Cardinals beat the Braves, 13-4, to snap a five-game losing streak. Torre drove in four runs with a homer and double before leaving the game after the Cardinals built up their big lead. Brock scored five times after reaching base on a double, single and three walks. Jose Cruz joined in the Cardinals' 15-hit attack with a two-run homer.
Astros 4, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
A slip by Glenn Beckert that prevented a play at the plate enabled the Astros to score the deciding run in the eighth inning to defeat the Cubs, 4-3. With one out, Doug Rader doubled and stopped at third on a single by Jack Hiatt. Roger Metzger grounded to Beckert, who slipped and had to go to first base for the putout as Rader scored to break the 3-3 tie.
Reds 6, Pirates 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
Pete Rose's 10th homer of the season and 100th of his major league career broke a 3-3 tie in the fourth inning and sent the Reds on their way to a 6-3 victory over the Pirates. Gary Nolan was on base with a single when Rose connected against Nelson Briles.
Expos 6, Giants 3 at Montreal (day game):
The Expos extended their club-record winning streak to seven games by beating the Giants, 6-3. Ernie McAnally and Rusty Staub shared honors for the Expos. McAnally pitched a seven-hitter, while Staub drove in four runs, including three with a homer in the fifth inning.
Mets 4, Padres 2 at New York (day game):
Led by Cleon Jones, who collected three hits including a key triple, the Mets defeated the Padres, 4-2. Jones' triple, following a walk to Wayne Garrett, broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning and two more runs followed on singles by Art Shamsky, Ken Boswell and Ed Kranepool. Nate Colbert tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly in the fourth and hit a homer in the ninth to account for the Padres' runs.
Phillies 3, Dodgers 2 at Philadelphia (day game):
A double by John Vukovich with the bases loaded sparked the Phillies to a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers. The Phillies began their scoring with a run in the second inning on a single by Deron Johnson, double by Don Money and grounder by Willie Montanez. Johnson walked in the fourth and, after singles by Money and Montanez, Vukovich doubled to drive in two runs.
