Cardinals 3, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
After striking out his first three times at bat, Bob Gibson came up with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning and won his own game, hitting an infield single to give the Cardinals a 3-2 victory over the Astros. Lou Brock and Joe Torre combined for the Cardinals' first two runs of the game and Joe Morgan counted both of the Astros' tallies. In the ninth, Jose Cruz walked with two out, Ted Kubiak was safe on an error by Roger Metzger and Bob Burda drew a pass to load the bases. Gibson hit a grounder into the hole between third and short. Metzger made a diving stop of the ball but was unable to recover in time for a throw as Cruz scored.

Rusty Staub and Boots Day drove in nine runs between them as the Expos blasted the Dodgers, 12-6, for their eighth straight victory. The Expos started the attack with five runs in the second inning. Then, in the eighth, Staub capped the Expos' scoring with a grand slam.

Giants 5, Mets 4 at New York (night game):
The relief pitching of Jerry Johnson, who did not allow a hit in the last 3 2/3 innings, enabled the Giants to defeat the Mets, 5-4. Bobby Bonds drove in two runs with a homer and double to pace the Giants to a 5-0 lead before the Mets rallied for all their runs in the sixth inning. With one away, Art Shamsky doubled, Ken Boswell and Tommie Agee singled and Ed Kranepool tripled to produce three runs. Johnson, replacing Don Carrithers, bobbled a bunt by Jerry Grote, allowing Kranepool to score, but then handcuffed the Mets completely the rest of the way.

Catcher Tim McCarver provided a two-run double to enable Rick Wise to pitch the Phillies to a 3-1 victory over the Padres. Wise helped himself by hitting a single in the fifth inning. Terry Harmon walked and McCarver followed with his two-bagger. Wise uncorked a wild pitch to allow Leron Lee to score for the Padres in the sixth, but the Phillies came back with an insurance run in their half on a walk to Roger Freed, wild pitch by Fred Norman and single by Willie Montanez.
