Today's scores and summaries:
Angels 1, Red Sox 0 at California (night game):
A pickoff play at second base killed a Red Sox threat and enabled the Angels to gain a 1-0 victory behind the pitching of Andy Messersmith and Lloyd Allen. The Angels scored their run off Sonny Siebert in the first inning. Sandy Alomar singled, took third on a single by Mickey Rivers and crossed the plate as Tony Gonzalez bounced into a double play. Messersmith extended his string of scoreless pitching to 17 2/3 innings before being lifted with two out in the eighth when Bob Montgomery singled and Siebert doubled. Allen, after throwing one pitch to Doug Griffin, whirled and picked Siebert off base.
Twins 8, Indians 4 at Cleveland (night game):
Harmon Killebrew clouted two homers and drove in five of the Twins' runs in an 8-4 victory over the Indians. Bert Blyleven, who started for the Twins, gave up five hits and three runs in the first inning but then settled down to pitch his 12th complete game. The Twins, after picking up a run in the fourth, went ahead to stay when Rod Carew walked, Tony Oliva singled and Killebrew homered in the fifth. Killer's other smash followed in the seventh with Carew on base via a single.
Tigers 4, White Sox 2 at Detroit (night game):
The Tigers spoiled Rich Hinton's first major league start, scoring three runs off the rookie in the third inning to defeat the White Sox, 4-2. Tony Taylor singled to drive in the first run and the second scored on a wild throw by Carlos May. However, this run became earned when Al Kaline singled, scoring Taylor. Hinton then hit Willie Horton with a pitch on the left eye before being removed. Horton had to be taken to the hospital.
Royals 4, Yankees 0 at Kansas City (night game):
Paul Splittorff, the Royals' rookie southpaw, pitched a three-hitter for his third shutout of the season and beat the Yankees, 4-0. The Royals settled Stan Bahnsen's fate with two runs in the third inning, taking advantage of three walks issued by the Yankee starter. Freddie Patek singled, Joe Keough walked and Amos Otis singled for the first run. After a groundout by Gail Hopkins, Lou Piniella was passed intentionally to load the bases. Bahnsen then passed Paul Schaal to force in Keough.
A's 6, Senators 2 at Oakland (night game):
Supported by a pair of three-run homers, Blue Moon Odom turned in his first complete game since June 27 and pitched the Athletics to a 6-2 victory over the Senators. Curt Blefary homered following singles by Joe Rudi and Angel Mangual in the first inning and Mangual hit for the circuit after Bert Campaneris and Rudi singled in the third. Jeff Burroughs homered for the Senators in the ninth after drawing passes in three previous trips to the plate.
Cubs 3, Braves 0 at Chicago (day game):
The pitching of Milt Pappas and batting of Billy Williams combined to give the Cubs a 3-0 victory over the Braves. Pappas allowed only five hits in earning his fifth shutout of the season. The victory was his 16th, equalling his major league career high. Williams knocked in two runs with a triple in the third inning and added the other tally with a homer in the sixth.
Pirates 7, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
Dock Ellis gained his 18th victory and Dave Giusti, who retired the last batter, was credited with his 26th save as the Pirates defeated the Astros, 7-3. Two of the Astros' runs, including a tally in the ninth inning, were unearned on errors by Rennie Stennett. However, the Pirates' second baseman had two hits and drove in two runs. The Pirates, after trailing, 1-0, went ahead to stay with four runs in the fourth inning. Bob Robertson walked and scored on singles by Manny Sanguillen and Dave Cash. Sanguillen advanced to third on Cash's hit and Cash took second on the throw. The Astros walked Jackie Hernandez intentionally to get at Ellis, but the Pirates' pitcher beat out a run-scoring infield hit. Stennett followed with a two-run single.
Reds 8, Cardinals 7 at St. Louis (night game):
Pinch-hitter Jimmy Stewart tripled with the bases loaded as the Reds erupted for five runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Cardinals, 8-7. Jose Cruz and Joe Torre each hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, who went into the final frame with a 7-3 lead. Johnny Bench walked and George Foster singled to start the Reds' rally. Al Santorini replaced Reggie Cleveland and gave up a single by Tommy Helms to load the bases. Frank Linzy relieved and walked Woody Woodward on four pitches to force in Bench. Stewart then batted for Wayne Granger and hit his triple to tie the score. Pete Rose followed with a sacrifice fly for the winning run.
