Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Orioles 9, Brewers 4 (night game) / Brewers 3, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Dave McNally gained his 16th victory when the Orioles won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 9-4, but Mike Cuellar was turned back in a bid for his 17th victory by the Brewers, who took the nightcap, 3-0, behind the pitching of Lew Krausse and Ken Sanders. Elrod Hendricks, catching for McNally, backed his pitcher with a homer and double, driving in five runs. Don Buford also hit for the circuit and McNally helped clinch his 10th straight victory with a two-run homer in the eighth. Johnny Briggs and Andy Kosco homered for the Brewers, who rallied for two more runs in the ninth before Eddie Watt, in relief of McNally, ended the game. In the nightcap, a combination of singles by Kosco and Ellie Rodriguez and infield outs by Dave May produced two of the Brewers' runs off Cuellar, while Briggs accounted for the other tally with a homer in the seventh inning.

Red Sox 6, Angels 2 at California (night game):
With Reggie Smith providing the principal batting support, Roger Moret turned in the first complete game of his brief major league career and pitched the Red Sox to a 6-2 victory over the Angels. Smith singled to drive in one of two Red Sox runs in the first inning and homered with two men on base in the fourth. The Angels picked up their runs in the home half of the fourth on a double by Jim Fregosi and homer by Ken McMullen.

Indians 9, Twins 8 at Cleveland (day game):
Three homers, including a grand slam by Ray Fosse, enabled the Indians to outslug the Twins, 9-8. John Lowenstein homered for the Indians' first two runs in the second inning. Fosse's jackpot wallop followed in the third. The Twins, who had two homers by Rich Reese and one by Tony Oliva, were leading, 8-6, before Vada Pinson came to the plate and hit for the circuit with two men on base in the sixth. As a result, Mark Ballinger, rookie from Jacksonville (Dixie Association), who pitched hitless ball in the last four innings for the Indians, was able to pick up his first major league victory.

Tigers 5, White Sox 4 at Detroit (day game):
The Tigers scored twice on four walks and an error in the seventh inning to defeat the White Sox, 5-4. Les Cain, who was the Tigers' winner, hit a homer and also bunted safely to help himself to a 3-2 lead, but the White Sox went ahead with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth. Bart Johnson, pitching in relief for the White Sox, lost his control in the seventh and passed four batters to force in one run. Facing Steve Kealey in relief, Jim Northrup grounded to Mike Andrews for a forceout at the plate, but when catcher Tom Egan threw to first base in an attempted double play, Andrews dropped the ball as Gates Brown streaked home with the deciding run.

Royals 4, Yankees 3 at Kansas City (night game):
An unearned run in the eighth inning enabled the Royals to defeat the Yankees, 4-3. Ron Blomberg provided the Yankees' entire attack, driving in all their runs with a pair of homers. After Blomberg's second smash put the Yankees ahead, 3-2, in the sixth inning, the Royals tied the score in their half on a triple by Lou Piniella and single by Bob Oliver. Piniella beat out an infield hit to Jerry Kenney in the eighth, raced to third on his wild throw and scored the winning run on a single by Oliver.

Darrell Evans homered for the Braves in the second inning and, after Johnny Callison knocked in two runs for the Cubs with a double in their half of the second, Earl Williams hit for the circuit with a man on base in the sixth to put the Braves in front again. The Cubs tied the score in the eighth on a triple by Joe Pepitone and single by Brock Davis. Williams opened the Braves' ninth with a single and was forced by Mike Lum. After Evans struck out, Sonny Jackson beat out an infield hit and Marty Perez singled to produce the winning run.

Astros 4, Pirates 0 at Houston (night game):
Held to five hits by Don Wilson, the Pirates lost to the Astros, 4-0, with the result that their Eastern division lead was cut to five games over the Cardinals, who moved into second place ahead of the Cubs. The Astros nicked Steve Blass for two runs in the third inning on a walk to Joe Morgan and singles by Cesar Cedeno, Bob Watson and Doug Rader. Cedeno doubled and Watson singled for another run in the fifth. After a single by Rich Chiles, Watson was thrown out out trying to score on a grounder by Rader, but Chiles subsequently counted the Astros' last run on a pair of errors.

[DH] Mets 9, Dodgers 2 (day game) / Mets 2, Dodgers 1 at New York (night game):
After Tom Seaver posted a 9-2 victory in the first game, the Mets completed the sweep of a doubleheader with the Dodgers when Cleon Jones homered in the ninth inning to win the second game, 2-1. The Mets clinched the opener in the first inning when they scored six runs at the expense of Claude Osteen, who failed to retire any of six batters. In the nightcap, the Dodgers were first to score, counting in the eighth inning on a pinch-single by Tom Haller, but the Mets came back with the tying run on a pinch-single by Tommie Agee. With two out in the ninth, Jones worked the count to 3-and-1 on Jim Brewer before smashing his homer.

[DH] Giants 5, Phillies 2 (night game) / Phillies 7, Giants 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Rick Wise smashed two homers, including the winning grand slam, to go along with his pitching as the Phillies captured the second game of a twi-night doubleheader, 7-3, after the Giants won the first game, 5-2. In the opener, Al Gallagher drove in two of the Giants' runs with a pair of singles and Willie Mays hit a homer.
