Today's scores and summaries:
Expos 6, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
A three-run homer by Bob Bailey and two-run drive by Steve Renko, who was the winning pitcher, led the Expos to a 6-2 victory over the Cubs. Bill Hands held the Expos in check until the sixth inning when they scored their first run on a double by Rusty Staub and single by Ron Fairly. Jim Fairey followed with a single and Bailey then hit his homer. Renko connected for the circuit after John Bateman was safe on an error in the eighth. Glenn Beckert homered for the Cubs' runs in the home half of the eighth before Mike Marshall replaced Renko.
[DH] Reds 2, Padres 1 (night game) / Padres 4, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Lee May drove in a run with a single in the first inning and then homered in the eighth to give the Reds a 2-1 victory in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, but the Padres came back to win the second game, 4-3, with the aid of a homer and double by Cito Gaston, who drove in three runs. Gaston hit his round-tripper after a single by Enzo Hernandez in the first inning. The Reds went ahead with three runs in the third, but the Padres tied the score when Nate Colbert doubled and Ollie Brown singled in the fifth. Don Mason singled in the eighth and counted the winning run on Gaston's double, enabling Clay Kirby to defeat the Reds for the sixth straight time since May 25, 1970.
Dodgers 3, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
The Dodgers bunched two walks and three hits for three runs in the third inning to defeat the Astros, 3-2. Bobby Valentine and Bill Buckner drew passes and Willie Davis beat out an infield hit to load the bases. Dick Allen singled, driving in two runs, and a third counted on a single by Jim Lefebvre. The Astros rallied for two runs against Al Downing in the eighth before Jim Brewer took over to save the game.
Pirates 6, Phillies 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates, after falling behind on a damaging error by Gene Clines, rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Phillies, 6-4. Nelson Briles, starting for the first time since July 19, contributed a run-scoring double as the Pirates took a 3-0 lead, but the Phillies went ahead with four runs in the sixth. Tim McCarver singled and stopped at third with one out on a double by Willie Montanez. Clines then dropped a sacrifice fly by John Vukovich, McCarver and Montanez scoring. The Phillies went on to load the bases and added two runs on a single by Ron Stone. In the Pirates' half, passes to Luke Walker and Willie Stargell, around a single by Rennie Stennett, filled the sacks. Roberto Clemente came through in the clutch with a two-run single and Manny Sanguillen iced the decision with a two-out single to drive in the final marker.
Cardinals 3, Mets 2 at St. Louis (night game):
A wild pitch by Jerry Koosman allowed Lou Brock to score in the seventh inning and gave the Cardinals a 3-2 victory over the Mets. Both of the Mets' runs in the third were unearned as the result of an error by Ted Simmons, who dropped a throw to the plate in a collision with Jerry Grote. The Cards came right back with the tying pair on a single by Brock, safe bunt by Ted Sizemore, a double steal and single by Julian Javier. Brock's steal was his 50th as the speedster set an N. L. record with his seventh consecutive season of 50 or more thefts. Brock also stole his 51st base in the fifth but was stranded. However, in the seventh, Brock singled and raced to second when Cleon Jones' throw from the outfield bounced into short right field. After taking third on an infield hit by Sizemore, Brock scored when Koosman uncorked his wild pitch. Steve Carlton gained his 18th victory for a personal career high.
