Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 4, Orioles 3 at Boston (night game):
Luis Tiant gained his first victory of the season after seven defeats when Carl Yastrzernski singled a run across for the Red Sox in the ninth inning to beat the Orioles, 4-3. The Red Sox started with three runs in the first inning, one scored by Reggie Smith on the front end of a double steal with Rico Petrocelli. The Orioles got a homer by Andy Etchebarren in the fourth and tied the game with a two-run double by Boog Powell in the fifth. Tiant, who took over in relief of Gary Peters in the seventh, came out a winner when Mike Fiore walked, Doug Griffin singled and Yastrzemski rapped his two-out hit.
A's 4, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Three unearned runs provided the Athletics with their margin in a 4-1 victory over the Angels. After the Angels scored in the first inning on a safe bunt by Mickey Rivers, a stolen base and single by Jim Spencer, an error by Jim Fregosi enabled the A's to tie the score in their half. The deadlock persisted until the eighth when Joe Rudi singled and counted on a double by Reggie Jackson. Two tainted tallies followed to clinch the verdict on an error by Spencer and triple by Rick Monday.
[DH] Tigers 6, Indians 1 (night game) / Indians 6, Tigers 3 at Detroit (night game):
Home runs helped the Tigers win the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 6-1, just as they assisted the Indians in taking the second game, 6-3. In the opener, Norm Cash and Dick McAuliffe hit round-trippers for the Tigers. McAuliffe connected in the fifth inning. After one out, Gates Brown singled and Cash also hit for the circuit. Cash drove in two more runs with a single in the seventh. A homer by Roy Foster saved the Indians from being shut out. In the nightcap, the Indians had a two-run homer by Graig Nettles in the third inning and three-run smash by Chris Chambliss in the fourth.
Royals 6, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Royals beat the Brewers, 6-4, to wind up August with 18 victories against 12 defeats, the best record for any month in their brief history. After the Brewers took a 4-3 lead with three runs in the sixth inning, Joe Keough homered to tie the score in the seventh. Gail Hopkins then walked, Lou Piniella singled and Paul Schaal hit a sacrifice fly to send the Royals ahead. Lance Clemons, the fourth of five pitchers used by the Royals in the game, sewed up the victory by hitting his first major league homer in the eighth inning.
Twins 4, White Sox 3 at Minnesota (night game):
After rallying to tie the game with two runs in the ninth inning, the Twins scored on a sacrifice fly by Harmon Killebrew with the bases loaded in the 10th to defeat the White Sox, 4-3. An infield hit by Rich Reese, triple by Steve Braun and sacrifice fly by Jim Nettles gave the Twins their tying pair. In the 10th, a walk to Danny Thompson, sacrifice by Cesar Tovar, single by Rod Carew and intentional pass to Tony Oliva preceded Killebrew's fly. Bob Gebhard, who pitched the last two innings, received credit for his first major league victory.
Senators 6, Yankees 5 at New York (night game):
Pinch-hitting, Don Mincher smashed a grand-slam homer in the sixth inning, but the Senators failed to hold the lead and needed an unearned run in the ninth to defeat the Yankees, 6-5. In the sixth, a walk to Elliott Maddox, single by Frank Howard and passes to Jeff Burroughs and Dave Nelson forced in the Senators' first run to tie the score at 1-1. Roger Hambright, replacing Mike Kekich, got Paul Casanova on a popup, but Mincher then batted for Toby Harrah and hit his homer. The Yankees rallied to tie the score in the eighth on an error, a hit batsman and four singles. However, in the ninth, Del Unser singled, moved to second on an infield out and scored the Senators' winning run when Frank Baker booted a grounder by Burroughs.
[DH] Cubs 7, Expos 6 (day game) / Expos 11, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
Led by Don Kessinger, who collected five hits including the game-winning single in the 10th inning, the Cubs won first game of a doubleheader, 7-6, but the second game was halted by darkness after six innings with the Expos leading, 8-1. In the 10th inning of the lidlifter, Brock Davis walked and both runners were safe on a late throw to second on a bunt by Chris Cannizzaro. Cleo James then was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Kessinger came to the plate and hit his game-ending single. In the nightcap, the Expos set a club record for most runs in one inning, scoring eight times in the sixth. John Boccabella and Bobby Wine led off with singles and when John Strohmayer bunted, the bases were loaded on Ken Holtzman's late throw to the third. Ron Hunt doubled and Ron Woods tripled, each driving in two runs. A pass to Rusty Staub ended Holtzman's pitching. After Joe Decker relieved, a double by Bob Bailey added one run and Boots Day accounted for two more with a single. Day took second on a sacrifice and counted the final run on a single by Boccabella. The game was resumed before the next day's regularly-scheduled contest between the two clubs.
Reds 2, Padres 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Reds, after losing the lead in the top of the ninth, came back with a run in their half to defeat the Padres, 2-1. The Reds scored initially in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Woody Woodward with the bases loaded. The Padres' run in the ninth came on a double by Leron Lee and pinch-single by Larry Stahl. In the Reds' half, Tommy Helms beat out a grounder to deep short, Jimmy Stewart walked and Pete Rose broke up the game with a single.
Dodgers 6, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
Staked to a three-run lead in the first inning, Doyle Alexander pitched the Dodgers to a 6-1 victory over the Astros. Bobby Valentine opened the game with a safe tap down the third base line and took second on Ron Cook's wild throw. After stopping at third on a single by Willie Davis, Valentine scored on a sacrifice fly by Dick Allen. Wes Parker followed with a homer, crossing the plate behind Davis. Alexander figured in the Dodgers' next three runs, setting one up with a sacrifice in the fifth and scoring two others after hitting a single in the seventh and drawing a walk in the ninth.
Pirates 7, Phillies 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Manager Danny Murtaugh called on three pinch-hitters and all came through successfully as the Pirates rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Phillies, 7-5. Deron Johnson and Oscar Gamble each drove in two runs as the Phillies built up an early 5-0 lead. After the Pirates pulled within reach with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth, Jackie Hernandez walked to open the seventh and Bill Mazeroski delivered a pinch-single. Following a sacrifice by Rennie Stennett, Gene Clines appeared as a pinch-hitter and delivered a two-run double to tie the score. An intentional pass to Roberto Clemente and another walk to Willie Stargell loaded the bases. Al Oliver struck out, but Manny Sanguillen came off the bench and singled to drive in the winning runs.
Giants 9, Braves 0 at San Francisco (night game):
The Giants capped their attack with a three-run homer by Ken Henderson and defeated the Braves, 9-0, behind the pitching of Gaylord Perry. Dave Kingman and Chris Speier each had three hits for the Giants and drove in two runs apiece.
Cardinals 2, Mets 1 at St. Louis (night game):
A safe bunt by Matty Alou and singles by Joe Torre and Ted Simmons gave the Cardinals a run in the ninth inning for a 2-1 victory over the Mets. The Cards counted their first run in the opening frame on a walk to Lou Brock, his 52nd theft of the season, an infield hit by Alou and single by Torre. The Mets pulled even in the eighth when Cleon Jones walked and Bob Aspromonte and Jerry Grote hit singles.
