Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 9, Indians 2 at Boston (night game):
Ending slugging drouths, George Scott smashed two homers and Carl Yastrzemski and uane Josephson whacked one apiece as the Red Sox defeated the Indians, 9-2, behind the pitching of Roger Moret, who turned in his second straight complete-game victory. Yastrzemski's homer was his first since August 2. Scott had gone without a circuit clout since August 16 and Josephson since August 17. Gomer Hodge, pinch-hitting for the Indians in the seventh inning, rapped his first major league homer.
[DH] Royals 3, White Sox 1 (night game) / Royals 8, White Sox 6 at Chicago (night game):
After Dick Drago tied the Kansas City record for most victories with his 16th of the season in the opener, the Royals rallied for three runs in the eighth inning of the nightcap to sweep a twi-night doubleheader with the White Sox, 3-1 and 8-6. Drago equaled the mark of Bud Daley of the former Kansas City Athletics, who won 16 games in both 1959 and '60. The White Sox, who had a homer by Carlos May, held a 6-5 lead going into the eighth inning of the nightcap when the Royals' rally started with one out on a pass to Amos Otis and single by Jerry May, sending Otis to third. Otis and Bobby Knoop, who ran for May, then worked a double steal, Otis sliding home safely to tie the score. Knoop took third on a passed ball. Freddie Patek walked and stole second. Sandy Valdespino followed with a single, driving in both runners, for his third and fourth RBIs of the game.
Angels 6, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Clyde Wright recovered from a shaky start and pitched the Angels to a 6-2 victory over the Brewers. Three singles, together with a sacrifice fly, produced the Brewers' runs in the first inning. The Angels tied the score in the fourth on singles by Mickey Rivers and Ken McMullen, a balk and a single by Tony Gonzalez. John Stephenson singled in the fifth and when Wright bunted, Jim Slaton threw wildly to second. Stephenson scored the tie-breaking run on a single by Rivers.
[DH] Twins 9, A's 4 (night game) / Twins 2, A's 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Two homers -- one by Steve Brye in the second inning and the other by George Mitterwald with two out in the ninth -- gave the Twins a 2-1 victory over Vida Blue to complete the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader after a grand slam by Harmon Killebrew as a pinch-hitter helped beat the Athletics, 9-4. Eric Soderholm, playing in his first major league game, homered for the Twins in the fourth inning of the lidlifter. Gene Tenace connected for the A's in the sixth to tie the score at 4-4. In the Twins' half, Brye walked, Steve Braun doubled and Soderholm was handed an intentional pass to load the bases. After Mudcat Grant relieved Diego Segui, Killebrew batted for Phil Roof and came through with his jackpot wallop. Brye's homer off Blue in the nightcap was the first of the rookie outfielder's major league career. The A's tied the score in the second on singles by Dwain Anderson, Joe Rudi and Reggie Jackson. Mitterwald's homer in the ninth pinned Blue with his seventh defeat against 23 victories.
Tigers 3, Yankees 1 at New York (night game):
With two out in the eighth inning, Bill Freehan doubled and Norm Cash homered to carry the Tigers to a 3-1 victory over the Yankees.
Orioles 4, Senators 2 at Washington (night game):
The Orioles rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Senators, 4-2, and bring Dave McNally his 11th straight victory and 17th of the season. Frank Howard homered after a single by Toby Harrah to produce the Senators' runs in the first. The Orioles were held by Pete Broberg until the eighth when a pinch-single by Tom Shopay, double by Merv Rettenmund and two-out single by Frank Robinson tied the score. Robinson took second on the throw to the plate. After an intentional pass to Andy Etchebarren, Brooks Robinson doubled to drive in the winning runs.
Dodgers 6, Reds 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
Climaxing the Dodgers' four-run rally in the ninth inning, Manny Mota tripled with the bases loaded to beat the Reds, 6-5. Walks to Jim Lefebvre and Bill Sudakis started the Dodgers' comeback before Joe Gibbon replaced Clay Carroll. Bobby Valentine singled to load the bases. Ron Cey struck out, but Maury Wills singled, driving in one run, before Mota's triple cleared the sacks.
Mets 7, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Mets scored three runs before a batter was retired in the first inning and went on from there to defeat the Phillies, 7-1. Bud Harrelson opened the game with a safe bunt, Tim Foli singled, Cleon Jones drove them home with a double and then counted himself on a single by Donn Clendenon. Duffy Dyer and Tommie Agee hit homers to add later runs to the Mets' count. Ray Sadecki was tagged for 10 hits by the Phillies, but the veteran lefthander yielded a run only in the third on triples by Larry Bowa and Mike Anderson.
Expos 6, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
One of the Pirates' batting heroes, Rennie Stennett turned into the goat with an error that helped the Expos scored three runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Eastern division leaders, 6-4. Stennett and Roberto Clemente each had four hits for the Pirates, who held a 4-3 lead going into the ninth. Bob Bailey and Gary Sutherland opened the Expos' rally with singles. Stennett then fumbled a grounder by John Bateman as Bailey scored. With one out, Ron Brand walked to load the bases. When Jim Fairey forced Brand, Sutherland crossed the plate to send the Expos ahead. Boots Day followed with a single to produce an insurance run.
Padres 3, Braves 2 at San Diego (night game):
Two unearned runs enabled the Padres to defeat the Braves, 3-2. In the first inning, Enzo Hernandez was safe on an error by Felix Millan, took second on an infield out, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a grounder by Cito Gaston. A single by Gaston and double by Leron Lee gave the Padres an earned run in the fourth, but their deciding tally in the seventh was tainted. Nate Colbert struck out but reached first base on a passed ball. After advancing on an infield out, Colbert scored on a single by Bob Barton.
Giants 16, Astros 6 at San Francisco (night game):
The Giants pounded out 20 hits, including a homer and three singles by Tito Fuentes, driving in four runs, to wallop the Expos, 16-6. Willie Mays rapped a triple and two doubles, while Dick Dietz and Bobby Bonds contributed homers to the Giants' attack. Juan Marichal, who started for the Giants, was tagged for two homers by Bob Watson and one by John Mayberry before being lifted in the fifth inning. Jim Barr, who relieved, received credit for his first major league victory.
Cardinals 6, Cubs 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Matty Alou, Joe Torre and Ted Simmons drove in two runs apiece to account for the Cardinals' scoring in a 6-1 victory over the Cubs. Simmons drove in a run with a single in the first inning and hit a homer in the eighth. Alou and Torre rapped back-to-back homers in the third. Alou got his second RBI with a single in the fourth and Torre doubled for a run in the sixth. Joe Pepitone homered off Reggie Cleveland for the Cubs' run in the sixth. The Cubs, in addition to losing the game, also lost the services of Glenn Beckert for the rest of the season when the star second baseman ruptured a tendon in his right thumb in a dive for Simmons' ground single in the first.
