Today's scores and summaries:
Indians 11, Red Sox 9 at Boston (day game):
The Indians, who were held to one hit in the first five innings, broke loose with four runs in the sixth and exploded for seven more in the seventh to defeat the Red Sox, 11-9. Ted Uhlaender and Vada Pinson hit doubles and Roy Foster and Chris Chambliss clouted homers in the sixth. The Indians sent 10 men to bat in the seventh and scored on a double by Fred Stanley, singles by Uhlaender and Pinson, double by Foster, singles by Chambliss and Graig Nettles and a homer by Ray Fosse. George Scott drove in four runs for the Red Sox with a pair of round-trippers.
Royals 3, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Al Fitzmorris sparked the Royals' scoring with a single and gained credit for a 3-1 victory over the White Sox with relief help from Ted Abernathy. After hitting his single in the third inning, Fitzmorris advanced on an infield out, stopped at third on a single by Sandy Valdespino and scored on a sacrifice fly by Amos Otis. Gail Hopkins followed with a homer for what proved to be the winning blow.
Brewers 4, Angels 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
After giving up four hits in the first two innings, Bill Parsons was untouchable the rest of the way and pitched the Brewers to a 4-1 victory over the Angels. The Brewers snapped a 1-1 tie on the wildness of Rudy May and an error by the Angels' pitcher in the fourth inning. Ellie Rodriguez and Dave May drew walks. Rick Auerbach drove in a run with a single. Parsons beat out a bunt and when May threw the ball over the head of first baseman Jim Spencer, both May and Auerbach scored.
A's 5, Twins 4 at Minnesota (day game):
The Athletics, who are on their way to the West division crown, mathematically eliminated the defending champion Twins, 5-4. Mike Epstein homered for the A's in the first inning and singled for one of their three runs in the fourth. After Harmon Killebrew put the Twins on the scoreboard with a single in their half of the fourth for his 100th RBI of the season, the A's counted what proved to be the deciding run in the ninth on a walk to Sal Bando, single by Angel Mangual, an infield out and safe bunt by Dick Green. A Twins' rally in their half of the ninth fell short with two runs on a homer by Steve Brye.
Tigers 9, Yankees 1 at New York (day game):
Norm Cash and Mickey Stanley slugged the Tigers to a 9-1 victory over the Yankees behind the five-hit pitching of Joe Coleman. Stanley batted in a run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning and homered with two men on base in the fourth. Cash hit his 29th homer of the season in the fifth and followed with a two-run shot for No. 30 in the seventh.
Orioles 6, Senators 2 at Washington (night game):
Jim Palmer joined teammates Mike Cuellar, Dave McNally and Pat Dobson in the 17-victory class when the Orioles defeated the Senators, 6-2. Palmer turned in his 17th complete game of the season, scattering nine hits including a homer by Del Unser. Boog Powell and Davey Johnson drove in two runs apiece for the Orioles. Johnson homered for one run in the fifth inning to help pin Denny McLain with his 18th defeat of the season.
Dodgers 2, Reds 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Willie Crawford batted in two runs with a double in the first inning and Al Downing took it from there to pitch the Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the Reds.
[DH] Mets 6, Phillies 5 (night game) / Mets 3, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Mets extended their winning streak to five games by beating the Phillies in both ends of a twi-night doubleheader, 6-5 and 3-0. The first game was decided in the 10th inning when Don Hahn singled, Tug McGraw sacrificed and Bud Harrelson singled. Jim McAndrew, with help from Danny Frisella, received credit for his first victory of the season in the nightcap. With the double dip, the Phillies' losing streak reached eight games. Barry Lersch was tagged with his 11th straight setback in the nightcap.
Pirates 7, Expos 6 at Pittsburgh (day game):
The Pirates, who committed six errors in a loosely-played contest, overcame a base-running blunder in the 11th inning and gained a 7-6 victory with the help of the Expos' fourth error of the game. Rennie Stennett opened the 11th with a double for his fourth hit and Gene Clines was hit by a pitch. However, Stennett wandered off second base and was picked off by Mike Marshall. The Expos' reliever then tried to pick off Clines but threw wildly, allowing the runner to reach second. Vic Davalillo followed with a pop double to drive in the winning run.
Braves 11, Padres 7 at San Diego (night game):
Although the Padres collected 16 hits, the Braves made better use of their 15 safeties and batted their way to an 11-7 victory. Five of the Braves' hits came in the third inning when they scored six runs. Earl Williams homered with a man on base in the sixth when the Braves added four more tallies.
Giants 1, Astros 0 at San Francisco (day game):
The Giants collected only two hits off Ken Forsch, but a homer by Bobby Bonds with two out in the first inning was enough to beat the Astros, 1-0. Don Carrithers posted the shutout, limiting the Astros to three singles.
Cubs 7, Cardinals 5 at St. Louis (day game):
Three homers helped carry the Cubs to a 7-5 victory over the Cardinals, who fell six games behind the Pirates in the East division. Jim Hickman and Chris Cannizzaro hit homers for the Cubs in the second inning. After the Cardinals tied the score, the Cubs regained the lead with a run in the fourth on an infield out by Don Kessinger with the bases loaded. The Cubs then exploded for four runs in the sixth. Cleo James was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Billy Williams. The Cardinals passed Hickman intentionally, but Ron Santo upset the apple cart with a three-run homer to decide the outcome of the game.
