Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 7, Senators 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Two triples and a single by Mark Belanger and a homer by Frank Robinson escorted Mike Cuellar to his 18th victory as the Orioles defeated the Senators, 7-1. Belanger drove in a run with his first triple of the game and scored himself when the Orioles stepped off to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Robinson homered in the third. Belanger crossed the plate after a triple in the fifth and scored for the third time after hitting a single in the eighth.

Angels 7, Brewers 3 at California (night game):
Andy Messersmith pitched a four-hitter and gained his 16th victory when the Angels defeated the Brewers, 7-3. Billy Parker and Jim Fregosi each drove in two runs in support of Messersmith, while Mickey Rivers had three hits and scored three runs. Jose Cardenal homered for the Brewers.

Red Sox 6, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
While Gary Peters pitched a three-hitter, the Red Sox unleashed an extra-base barrage against Mickey Lolich and defeated the Tigers, 6-1. The Red Sox collected nine hits good for 24 total bases off Lolich before kayoing the 23-game winner in the sixth inning. The attack included homers by Rico Petrocelli, Billy Conigliaro and Duane Josephson, triples by Reggie Smith and George Scott and doubles by Luis Aparicio and Petrocelli. Ike Brown homered for the Tigers' tally.

Royals 6, White Sox 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Sandy Valdespino, who had been on a batting streak since his recall from Omaha (American Association), drove in four runs to lead the Royals to a 6-1 victory over the White Sox. Valdespino homered with two men on base in the third inning, singled another run across in the sixth and added a double in the eighth, giving him 14 hits in 29 times at bat. Paul Splittorff held the White Sox to four hits but lost his shutout bid when Bill Melton homered in the fourth.

A's 5, Twins 4 at Oakland (night game):
Capping a comeback, the Athletics scored two runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Twins, 5-4, with the aid of great relief pitching by Darold Knowles, Mudcat Grant, Rollie Fingers and Bob Locker. The Twins scored their runs, three coming on a homer by Harmon Killebrew, before Blue Moon Odom could retire a batter in the first inning. The A's picked up an unearned run in the fourth and closed the gap when Reggie Jackson singled and Mike Epstein homered in the sixth. Then in the ninth, Gene Tenace doubled and when Dick Green sacrificed, both runners were safe on a late throw to third. Angel Mangual singled to score Tenace with the tying run and Bert Campaneris hit a sacrifice fly to admit Green with the winning run.

Braves 7, Giants 5 at Atlanta (night game):
After a wait of two hours, 19 minutes because of rain in the 11th inning, Hank Aaron smashed a three-run homer to carry the Braves to a 7-5 victory over the Giants, who went down to their sixth straight defeat. Chris Arnold hit his first major league homer for the Giants and Earl Williams whacked his 31st for the Braves before the game went into overtime. After each club counted in the 10th, the Giants went ahead in the 12th when Ken Henderson was waved home from third on a balk by Jim Nash. In the Braves' half, Jim Breazeale singled and Felix Millan walked before rain intervened. When play resumed, Ralph Garr struck out, but Aaron ended the game with his 40th homer.

Cardinals 8, Cubs 7 at Chicago (day game):
The Cardinals scored two runs in 12th inning and defeated the Cubs, 8-7, to pull within 5½ games of the Pirates in the East division race. Matty Alou singled with two out in the 12th, stole second and scored the tie-breaking run on a double by Ted Simmons. Joe Torre singled to drive in Simmons with what proved to be the winning run because the Cubs rallied for one run in their half on a single by Don Kessinger and double by Billy Williams before Stan Williams got Johnny Callison on a fly to end the game. Frank Fernandez and Ron Santo homered for the Cubs. Fernandez' drive was his first in the N. L. Jenkins, the Cubs' starter, became his club's all-time strikeout king, passing Charlie Root by fanning five to raise his career total to 1,433.

Astros 1, Reds 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Bearing down all the way, Jack Billingham allowed only two hits and pitched the Astros to a 1-0 victory over the Reds for his third shutout of the season. The Astros collected 10 hits, but scored only in the first inning. Roger Metzger led off with a single and, after Joe Morgan was retired, Cesar Geronimo forced Metzger. Cesar Cedeno then decided the ultimate outcome of the game with a double that drove in Geronimo.

Expos 3, Pirates 2 at Montreal (night game):
With two out in the 11th inning, successive singles by Rusty Staub, Bobby Wine and Bob Bailey gave the Expos a 3-2 victory over the Pirates. Gary Sutherland drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the eighth to put the Expos ahead, 2-1, but Al Oliver tied the score with a homer in the ninth. Sutherland's hit came off Bob Miller, who relieved Bob Johnson after Ron Fairly singled, Bailey walked and Jim Fairey singled.

Mets 4, Phillies 3 at New York (night game):
The Mets, after building up a 4-0 lead with the aid of two unearned runs, stood off the Phillies, 4-3. Two walks, a single by Ken Singleton, an error by Larry Bowa and forceout by Jerry Koosman gave the Mets three runs in the second inning. Their deciding tally followed in the fifth on singles by Cleon Jones, Ed Kranepool and Singleton. Deron Johnson homered for the Phillies.

Dodgers 6, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
The Dodgers erupted for four runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Padres, 6-2, to move within 3½, games of the slumping Giants in the West division race. Wes Parker opened the ninth with a single and took second on a grounder by Steve Garvey. After an intentional pass to Joe Ferguson, Jim Lefebvre singled to load the bases. Maury Wills singled, scoring Parker with the tie-breaking run. Bobby Valentine followed with a sacrifice fly. Willie Davis then drove in two more runs with a single to ice the Dodgers' fifth straight victory.
