Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 4, Angels 3 at California (day game):
Johnny Briggs, who hit a homer to cap a three-run outburst in the sixth inning, enabled the Brewers to gain a 4-3 victory over the Angels. With the score tied, 1-1, Bill Voss walked in the sixth and raced home on a double by Ron Theobald. After a wild pitch, Theobald scored on a sacrifice fly by Jose Cardenal. Briggs followed with his decisive homer. The Angels rallied against Marty Pattin in the eighth, but Ken Sanders made his 76th relief appearance and gained credit for his 28th save.

Indians 5, Yankees 2 at Cleveland (day game):
Two homers by Graig Nettles and one by Roy Foster accounted for all of the Indians' runs in a 5-2 victory over the Yankees. New York also got its runs on a homer, Felipe Alou connecting with a man on base in the first inning. The Indians bounced back with three runs in their half on a double by Ted Uhlaender and homers by Foster and Nettles. Two other tallies followed in the eighth when Ray Fosse doubled and Nettles hit his second homer of the game.

Tigers 3, Red Sox 2 at Detroit (day game):
An inside-the-park homer by Tony Taylor in the third inning and a two-run blast over the fence by Al Kaline in the fifth provided the Tigers with a 3-2 victory over the Red Sox. Carlton Fisk hit his first major league homer for the Red Sox in the third.

White Sox 3, Royals 0 at Kansas City (day game):
Wilbur Wood became the first White Sox pitcher to win 20 games since Gary Peters in 1964 when the knuckleballer defeated the Royals, 3-0. The White Sox gave Wood enough runs to win by scoring twice in the fifth inning on a single by Walt Williams, a stolen base, single by Pat Kelly and triple by Carlos May.

Twins 7, A's 5 at Oakland (day game):
Cesar Tovar drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the 10th inning to give the Twins a 7-5 victory over the Athletics. Vida Blue, who started for the A's and pitched eight innings, gave up five runs on seven hits, including a homer by George Mitterwald with two men on base. Mitterwald's blow in the eighth put the Twins ahead, 5-1, but Reggie Jackson homered to spark a three-run rally by the Athletics in their half of the eighth and homered again to tie the score in the ninth.

Giants 6, Braves 1 at Atlanta (day game):
Erupting for four runs in the first inning, the Giants defeated the Braves, 6-1, to snap their seven-game losing streak. Tito Fuentes set off the scoring with a homer and, after a pass to Willie Mays, Bobby Bonds also hit for the circuit. The Giants then loaded the bases and counted another run on a single by John Cumberland. Marty Perez homered for the Braves' tally in the third. The Giants wrapped up the victory with two runs in the ninth, one scoring on a double by Bonds for his third RBI of the game.

Cardinals 4, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
Recording the 50th shutout of his major league career, Bob Gibson pitched the Cardinals to a 4-0 victory over the Cubs. Ted Simmons and Matty Alou split the Cards' RBIs. Simmons homered with a man on base in the second inning and Alou drove in the other runs with a double in the third and single in the fifth.

Astros 4, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
Backed by two homers, Don Wilson pitched the Astros to a 4-2 victory over the Reds. John Mayberry hit for the circuit with two men on base in the fourth inning and Cesar Cedeno added a solo swat in the ninth. Both of the Reds' runs were unearned.

Pirates 4, Expos 0 at Montreal (day game):
Nelson Briles turned in his second straight complete game and pitched the Pirates to a 4-0 victory over the Expos. Bob Robertson led the Pirates at bat with three hits, driving in two runs and scoring one. A double by Rennie Stennett and single by Robertson produced the initial tally in the first inning. Robertson singled in the fourth, stopped at second on a single by Al Oliver and scored on two wild pitches by Steve Renko. The Pirates' last two runs counted in the eighth on a single by Dave Cash, sacrifice by Richie Hebner, pass to Roberto Clemente, single by Robertson and sacrifice fly by Oliver.

Mets 3, Phillies 2 at New York (day game):
The Phillies committed the sin of walking the opposing pitcher and, as a result, lost to the Mets, 3-2. With one out in the ninth, Joe Hoerner passed Danny Frisella. Ed Kranepool beat out a bunt and, when Hoerner threw wildly, both runners advanced an extra base. Mike Jorgensen then singled to send Frisella home with the winning run.

Dodgers 6, Padres 3 at San Diego (day game):
The Dodgers extended their winning streak to six games by coming from behind with two runs in fifth inning and four in the seventh to defeat the Padres, 6-3. The Padres took a 3-0 lead before Bill Sudakis doubled to drive in a Dodgers' pair in the fifth. Then, in the seventh, Willie Crawford walked, took third on a single by Steve Garvey and scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Tom Haller. Bobby Valentine singled Garvey to third and moved to second himself on the throw. After an intentional pass to Jim Lefebvre, Garvey scored when Maury Wills grounded into a forceout at second. Don Sutton, running for Valentine, crossed the plate with the last run on a passed ball.
