Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 9, Angels 4 at Chicago (night game):
After a shaky start, Bart Johnson settled down, struck out 12 and pitched the White Sox to a 9-4 victory over the Angels. Johnson gave up three runs in the first inning, but the White Sox put the game away with six in the second. Walks to Carlos May and Tom Egan and singles by Luis Alvarado, Johnson and Walt Williams tied the score. After a pass to Mike Hershberger, a sacrifice fly by Rich McKinney, single by Bill Melton and double by May added three more runs.

[DH] Tigers 9, Orioles 4 (night game) / Tigers 5, Orioles 3 at Detroit (night game):
Two relief pitchers, Tom Timmerman and Fred Scherman, made their first starts of the season and were winners when the Tigers defeated the Orioles in a twi-night doubleheader, 9-4 and 5-3. Dave McNally, who started the first game for the Orioles, was kayoed in the fourth inning, ending the lefthander's string of 13 straight victories. Mickey Stanley drove in five runs with a homer and single and Jim Northrup also hit for the circuit in support of Timmerman, who needed help from bullpen pal Ron Perranoski in the eighth. Scherman hurled the route in the nightcap. Northrup smashed a three-run homer in the fourth inning, but round-trippers by Frank Robinson and Davey Johnson helped the Orioles tie the score before Dick McAuliffe won the game for the Tigers with a homer in the seventh.

A's 6, Brewers 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
Vida Blue, who had not been a winner since August 29, was rapped for five runs in five innings, but the Athletics took their young lefthander off the hook and defeated the Brewers, 6-5, on a run-scoring single by pinch-hitter Tommy Davis in the 11th. Darrell Porter hit a three-run homer off Blue in the second and Andy Kosco added a solo swat off the southpaw in the fifth. The A's, who had scored twice in the third, narrowed their deficit with back-to-back homers by Reggie Jackson and Sal Bando in the sixth and tied the score with two walks and a single by Mike Hegan in the eighth. Curt Blefary drew a pass in the 11th, moved up on a sacrifice and scored on Davis' hit.

Royals 2, Twins 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Mike Hedlund escaped from a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and pitched the Royals to a 2-1 victory over the Twins. In the first, the Twins loaded the bases with one out on a single by Cesar Tovar and two passes, but Leo Cardenas lined into a double play. Later in the game, with the bases empty, Cardenas homered to produce the Twins' lone run. The Royals scored for the first time in the seventh on singles by Amos Otis and Paul Schaal around an infield out. A single by Ed Kirkpatrick, double by Bobby Knoop and single by Freddie Patek added the winning run in the seventh.

[DH] Yankees 1, Indians 0 (night game) / Yankees 7, Indians 1 at New York (night game):
Fritz Peterson pitched a two-hitter in the opener and Stan Bahnsen followed with a four-hitter in the nightcap as the Yankees swept a twi-night doubleheader with the Indians, 1-0 and 7-1. A homer by Graig Nettles saved the Indians from a complete washout. Peterson won his duel with Sam McDowell when the Yankees scored in the third inning on singles by Thurman Munson and Bobby Murcer, a pass to Roy White and single by Felipe Alou. In the second game, Bahnsen accounted for two Yankee runs with a bases-loaded single in the seventh. Nettles set a major league record for the most double plays by a third baseman with his 50th and 51st of the season, one more than the previous mark by Harlond Clift of the St. Louis Browns in 1937.

Red Sox 10, Senators 7 at Washington (night game):
Although committing five errors, the Red Sox were able to defeat the Senators, 10-7, with the aid of three homers during a five-run explosion in the sixth inning. Juan Beniquez led off the big frame with a single and, after one out, Reggie Smith and Rico Petrocelli homered on successive pitches. Cecil Cooper followed with a triple and scored on a wild pitch before Carltonn Fisk capped the outburst with the third homer of the inning.

Astros 4, Reds 1 at Houston (night game):
Don Wilson pitched a one-hitter and batted in two runs, but the Astros' righthander needed the help of a triple play to defeat the Reds, 4-1. In the second inning, Tony Perez doubled for the Reds' only safety. Bernie Carbo and George Foster were hit successively by pitched balls to load the bases and pat Corrales walked to force in the Reds' run. Joe Morgan then initiated the Astros' second triple play of the season with a diving backhanded catch of a line drive by Darrel Chaney. While still on his back, Morgan flipped to Roger Metzger to double Foster off second and the relay to John Mayberry at first caught Corrales for the third out.

Braves 3, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Mike Lum hit a homer in the ninth inning to tie the score and connected for the circuit again in the 11th to give the Braves a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers. Manny Mota drove in the Dodgers' runs with a single in fourth, but Hank Aaron started the Braves' comeback with a homer in the eighth and Lum took it from there, handing the Dodgers their third straight defeat and dropping them two games behind the Giants in the West division race.

Cardinals 7, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
Joe Torre hit a three-run homer as the Cardinals' big blow in a 7-2 victory over the Expos. Lou Brock doubled in the fourth inning, stopped at third on a single by Ted Sizemore and beat the throw home on a grounder by Matty Alou before Torre came to the plate and boosted his season's RBI total to 131 with his homer.

Cubs 4, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Cleo James hit a homer in the third inning and drove in two more runs with a single in the sixth to pace the Cubs to a 4-3 victory over the Phillies. After James hit his single with the bases loaded, Carmen Fanzone singled to supply what proved to be the winning run. Deron Johnson accounted for the Phillies' runs, hitting a homer with two men on base in the ninth.

Mets 3, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Gary Gentry pitched a three-hitter and Ted Martinez, Ken Singleton and Ed Kranepool socked homers for the Mets to defeat the Pirates, 3-0. The homer by Martinez on Briles' opening pitch of the game was his first in the major leagues.

Giants 7, Padres 5 at San Francisco (night game):
Coming through in the clutch, Dick Dietz hit a pinch-homer with two men on base in the sixth inning to enable the Giants to defeat the Padres, 7-5, and increase their West division lead to two games over the Dodgers, who were beaten by the Braves. Three unearned runs gave the Padres a 5-3 lead before the Giants began their rally in the sixth with a pass to Dave Kingman and single by Al Gallagher. Chris Speier, attempting to sacrifice, forceed Kingman at third, but Dietz batted for Russ Gibson and came through with his homer. The Giants went on to add an insurance run on walks to Ken Henderson and Willie Mays, a double steal and an infield out by Tito Fuentes, scoring Henderson.
