Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 2, White Sox 0 at Chicago (day game):
Andy Messersmith pitched two-hit ball for seven innings before twisting an ankle and Dave LaRoche allowed one more hit while finishing the Angels' 2-0 victory over the White Sox. Sandy Alomar homered off loser Wilbur Wood in the third and the other run counted in the eighth on a double by Ken Berry, a sacrifice and a passed ball.

Orioles 8, Tigers 1 at Detroit (day game):
While Mike Cuellar pitched a four-hitter, the Orioles piled up 18 hits, their season high, and defeated the Tigers, 8-1, to apply the brakes to the Motor City crew's seven-game winning streak. Frank Robinson drove in three runs with a pair of singles and Brooks Robinson contributed a homer to the Orioles' attack. Bobby Grich, playing his first game since being recalled from Rochester (International), collected three hits.

A's 6, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
The Athletics broke the A. L. record for most games won on the road when they defeated the Brewers, 6-2, for their 55th victory of the season in enemy parks. The former mark of 54 was set by the Yankees in 1939. The A's decided the outcome in the first inning when Rick Monday and Reggie Jackson singled and Mike Epstein homered.

[DH] Twins 6, Royals 3 (day game) / Royals 5, Twins 2 at Minnesota (day game):
Monty Montgomery, rookie from Elmira (Eastern), gained his second major league victory as the Royals won the nightcap of a doubleheader, 5-2, after losing the opener to the Twins, 6-3. The Twins sent Blyleven on his way to triumph in the first game when they scored four runs in the first inning on a triple by Leo Cardenas with the bases loaded and single by Rick Renick, who started his first game since undergoing knee surgery in mid-May. Cesar Tovar singled with the sacks filled in the third to add the Twins' other two tallies. In the nightcap, Montgomery pitched scoreless ball until the ninth inning when Ted Abernathy had to take over to put down a two-run rally by the Twins. Paul Schaal homered for the Royals and Gail Hopkins batted in two runs with a double.

Yankees 3, Indians 2 at New York (day game):
Although held to four hits, the Yankees were able to defeat the Indians, 3-2. The Yankees scored on a walk to Frank Baker, a sacrifice and single by Jake Gibbs in the third inning and picked up another run without the benefit of a hit in the seventh on a pass to Roy White, a stolen base and two errors. With the score tied in the ninth, Gibbs singled and took second on a fumble of the ball by Roy Foster. After a sacrifice by Felipe Alou and intentional pass to Roy White, Ron Blomberg singled to drive in the winning run.

Red Sox 4, Senators 3 at Washington (day game):
Joe Lahoud and Rico Petrocelli batted in two runs apiece to lead the Red Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Senators. Lahoud homered after a pass to Petrocelli in the second inning. Petrocelli drove in a run with a double in the fourth and then provided the deciding marker with a homer in the sixth. Pete Broberg, the Senators' losing pitcher, hit his first major league homer.

Astros 5, Reds 4 at Houston (night game):
Marking his 28th birthday, Joe Morgan homered in the 11th inning to give the Astros a 5-4 victory over the Reds. A homer by Johnny Bench with two men on base in the third helped the Reds take a 4-0 lead, but the Astros picked up a run in the sixth and rallied to tie the score in the seventh.

[DH] Dodgers 12, Braves 0 (day game) / Dodgers 4, Braves 0 at Los Angeles (day game):
Getting shutout pitching from Al Downing and Don Sutton, the Dodgers snapped their four game losing streak and swept over the Braves in a doubleheader, 12-0 and 4-0. In the lidlifter, the Dodgers rolled up their season high of 19 hits, including a homer, double and two singles by Willie Davis, who drove in three runs. Downing held the Braves to three hits. Sutton pitched a six-hitter in the nightcap and had the support of a homer by batterymate Duke Sims. The victories moved the Dodgers within 1½ games of the Giants in the West division race.

Cardinals 11, Expos 0 at Montreal (day game):
After failing to win in three straight starts, Steve Carlton breezed to his 19th victory on a four-hitter as the Cardinals romped over the Expos, 11-0. Joe Torre and Ted Simmons each had three of the Cardinals' 15 hits. Every player in the lineup except Ted Sizemore drove in at least one run.

Cubs 6, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (day game):
Fergie Jenkins, who had made three unsuccessful tries for his 22nd victory, finally achieved it with the help of his own bat as the Cubs defeated the Phillies, 6-3. With the score tied, 3-3, Jenkins doubled in the ninth inning, Cleo James beat out a bunt and Paul Popovich singled, scoring Jenkins. The Cubs went on to add two more runs on sacrifice flies by Billy Williams and Joe Pepitone.

Mets 5, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Helped by an error, the Mets scored four runs, three of them unearned, in the first inning to defeat the Pirates, 5-2. Ted Martinez led off with a single and, with one out, Jackie Hernandez booted a grounder by John Milner. Ed Kranepool singled and Mike Jorgensen doubled, each driving in a run. After an intentional pass to Ken Singleton, Duffy Dyer struck out, but Tim Foli singled to add two more runs.

Giants 4, Padres 1 at San Francisco (day game):
The Giants were held to six hits by Dave Roberts but defeated the Padres, 4-1, for only their third victory in the last 14 games. A double by Bobby Bonds, safe bunt by Dave Kingman and two-out single by Hal Lanier gave the Giants two runs in the second inning. They added an unearned counter in the third and posted an insurance tally on a double by Don Carrithers and single by Tito Fuentes in the fifth.
