Red Sox 3, Tigers 2 at Boston (night game):
After failing to hold a two-run lead in the ninth inning, Jim Lonborg gained a victory when the Red Sox scored in the 10th to defeat the Tigers, 3-2. George Scott drove in the Hub club's initial pair with a single in the sixth, but the Bengals pulled even with a burst of four singles in the ninth. However, in the 10th, Cecil Cooper hit a single batting for Lonborg, Doug Griffin sacrificed and Luis Aparicio won the game with a single.

Royals 6, Angels 2 at California (night game):
The Royals clinched second place in the West division and Dick Drago became the winningest pitcher in Kansas City major league history by defeating the Angels, 6-2, for his 17th victory. Bob Oliver hit a three-run homer for the Royals and Lou Piniella, who rapped three singles, batted in two runs.

Brewers 4, Twins 2 at Minnesota (day game):
Two unearned runs enabled the Brewers to defeat the Twins, 4-2. Johnny Briggs hit two homers for the Brewers, but these were offset by back-to-back blows by Graig Nettles and Harmon Killebrew for the Twins. The Brewers' unearned pair counted in the eighth inning on singles by Ron Theobald and Frank Tepedino, Jim Nettles' bobble of Tepedino's hit in center field and a sacrifice fly by Jose Cardenal.

Orioles 5, Yankees 0 at New York (night game):
Dave McNally entered a charmed circle by pitching the Orioles to a 5-0 victory over the Yankees and became the first A. L. hurler to win 20 or more games for each of four consecutive seasons since Red Ruffing accomplished the feat with the Yankees from 1936 through '39. Paul Blair and Boog Powell hit homers for the Orioles, who iced their victory with three runs in the ninth inning. Andy Etchebarren drove in two with a bases-loaded single and Davey Johnson stole home for the final tally.

[DH] White Sox 5, A's 1 (night game) / White Sox 6, A's 2 at Oakland (night game):
Carlos May and Pat Kelly each drove in four runs to lead the White Sox to 5-1 and 6-2 victories in the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Athletics. May batted in two runs in each game, while Kelly accounted for one RBI in the opener and three in the nightcap. Rich McKinney hit a homer and run-scoring single for the White Sox in the first game, which was marred by a ninth-inning fight between Bart Johnson of the White Sox and Mike Epstein of the Athletics.

Senators 9, Indians 1 at Washington (night game):
Batting 1-2 in the Senators' order, Del Unser and Dave Nelson scored seven times between them in a 9-1 victory over the Indians. Unser, who scored three runs, hit a double and two singles. Nelson, who counted after reaching base on a walk, single and double, capped his scoring with a fourth run on a homer in the sixth inning. Graig Nettles hit a homer in the seventh to account for the Indians' run off Dick Bosman.

Braves 5, Padres 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Hank Aaron reached his career high for homers in one year with his 46th of the season to mark the Braves' 5-2 victory over the Padres. Darrell Evans and Ralph Garr also homered off Jay Franklin, who was defeated in his first major league start.

Cubs 3, Mets 0 at Chicago (day game):
Burt Hooton outpitched Tom Seaver and gained his second major league victory when the Cubs defeated the Mets, 3-0. Hooton, who also beat the Mets for his first victory, 3-2, September 15, allowed only two singles. Seaver gave up three hits, but they included a homer by Ron Santo after a walk to Pat Bourque in the second inning. The other run counted in the third when Cleo James was hit by a pitch, Paul Popovich singled and Billy Williams lofted a sacrifice fly.

Reds 9, Dodgers 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Lee May batted in five runs with a homer and double to lead the Reds to a 9-3 victory over the Dodgers. Johnny Bench started the Reds' scoring with a round-tripper in the second inning. May homered with two men on base when the Reds scored four times in the fifth and knocked in two more with a double when the Reds added their four other runs in the sixth.

Astros 3, Giants 1 at Houston (night game):
A homer by rookie catcher Larry Howard with a man on base in the seventh inning provided the Astros with a 3-1 victory over the Giants. The Astros scored their first run on a single by Joe Morgan and double by Cesar Cedeno in the third inning, but the Giants tied the score with a homer by Willie McCovey in the seventh. In the Astros' half, Jim Wynn doubled ahead of Howard's homer.

[DH] Phillies 5, Expos 4 (night game) / Expos 4, Phillies 3 at Montreal (night game):
The Phillies erupted for five runs in the seventh inning to win the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 5-4, but the batting of Bob Bailey carried the Expos to a 4-3 victory in the nightcap. Oscar Gamble homered to start the Phillies' outburst in the first game. Tim McCarver followed with a single and Willie Montanez walked. After a sacrifice, Greg Luzinski struck out, but Don Money walked to load the bases. Roger Freed doubled to drive in two runs and Billy Champion won his own game with a double to add the last two tallies. Bailey homered with two men on base in the first inning and drove in another run with a single in the third to account for the Expos' scoring in the second game.

Cardinals 6, Pirates 4 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals delayed their demise in the East division race by defeating the Pirates, 6-4. The Pirates got off to a 4-0 lead, two runs scoring on a single by Dock Ellis, who was bidding for his 20th victory. The Cardinals rallied to tie the score and then beat Ellis in the seventh inning when Ted Simmons singled and Jose Cruz hit a homer.
