Today's scores and summaries:
White Sox 2, Brewers 1 at Chicago (day game):
Bill Melton became the first home-run champion in the history of the White Sox, hitting his 33rd of the season, to mark a 2-1 victory over the Brewers. Melton finished one homer ahead of Reggie Jackson of the Athletics and Norm Cash of the Tigers. Tony Muser tripled and scored on a single by Chuck Brinkman in the second inning before Melton provided the deciding run with his smash in the third. The White Sox used five pitchers. After the Brewers scored in the ninth on a single by Jose Cardenal, two errors and a pass to Darrell Porter with one out, Stan Perzanowski saved the game by getting Tom Matchick to hit into a forceout at the plate and Roberto Pena lined out.
Angels 3, Twins 2 at Minnesota (day game):
The Angels finished in fourth place in the West division with a 3-2 victory over the Twins, who were relegated to fifth. A pinch-single by Syd O'Brien decided the outcome. With the score tied in the eighth inning, 1-1, Billy Parker singled for the Angels. Tommie Reynolds hit a grounder and when Steve Braun failed to touch second on an attempted forceout of Parker, both runners were safe. Jeff Torborg sacrificed before O'Brien batted for Rudy May and delivered a two-run single.
Senators 7, Yankees 5 at Washington (night game):
The Senators were deprived of a possible 7-5 victory in their last appearance in Washington when unruly fans, in hunt of souvenirs, swarmed onto the field with two out in the ninth inning, forcing the umpires to forfeit the game to the Yankees, 9-0. Homers by Rusty Torres, Bobby Murcer and Roy White paced the Yankees to a 5-1 lead before Frank Howard hit for the circuit to spark a four-run rally by the Senators in the sixth. Dave Nelson and Tom Ragland were safe on errors in the eighth and Tommy McCraw broke the tie with a single, scoring Nelson. Elliott Maddox followed with a sacrifice fly to allow Ragland to cross the plate. All individual performances in the game went into the official records, except that no pitcher was credited with the victory or charged with the defeat.
Dodgers 2, Astros 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Although defeating the Astros, 2-1, the Dodgers fell one game short of overtaking the Giants, who won the West division title by beating the Padres. Groans went up from the crowd of 52,684 when the score of the Giants' 5-1 victory was flashed on the stadium message board. The Dodgers started their futile last-night chase with an unearned run in the fourth inning. Dick Allen singled and Manny Mota, bunting, was safe on an error by Johnny Edwards. Allen took third on Willie Crawford's forceout of Mota and scored on a grounder by Jim Lefebvre. The Astros pulled even in the sixth when Cesar Cedeno doubled and Bob Watson singled. Don Sutton then helped win his own game with a single in the seventh. Sutton took third on a single by Maury Wills and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bill Buckner.
Cubs 5, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
A three-run outburst by the Cubs in the ninth inning enabled Fergie Jenkins to defeat the Expos, 5-3, for his 24th victory. Gene Hiser walked in the ninth and scored on singles by Billy Williams and Ron Santo to break a 2-2 tie. Jim Hickman then doubled, dirving in two runs, to provide the winning margin.

Manny Sanguillen hit a homer for the Pirates in the third inning to tie the score at 1-1, but Willie Montanez put the Phillies ahead again with a two-run smash in the home half. The homer was the 30th of the season for Montanez, setting a Phillies' club record for a rookie player. The Pirates came back to decide the game with three runs in the fourth. Roberto Clemente singled, took third on a single by Willie Stargell and scored on a sacrifice fly by Al Oliver. Vic Davalilllo singled and, after Sanguillen went out, Jackie Hernandez drove in the tying and winning runs with a double.
Giants 5, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
The Giants won the West division title by one game over the Dodgers when Juan Marichal pitched a five-hitter and beat the Padres, 5-1. The Giants began nailing down their victory in the fourth inning when Tito Fuentes singled, Willie Mays drove him in with a double and Dave Kingman smashed a two-run homer off Dave Roberts. Marichal dropped a throw while covering first base on a grounder by Ollie Brown to lead to the Padres' run in the fifth. Brown took second on an infield out by Larry Stahl and scored on a single by Bob Barton. The Giants iced their championship champagne with their last two runs in the ninth. Chris Speier doubled and scored on another two-bagger by Ken Henderson. After taking third on a long fly by Fuentes, Henderson was waved home with the final run when Al Severinsen balked with Mays at bat.
Braves 6, Reds 2 at Atlanta (night game):
After Jim Breazeale led off the seventh inning with the first homer of his major league career, the Braves added five unearned runs on three errors to defeat the Reds, 6-2.
