Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Tigers 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Pitching the last two innings in relief, Doyle Alexander gained credit for his first A. L. victory when the Orioles defeated the Tigers, 5-2. After the ex-Dodger replaced Mike Cuellar, the Orioles broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the eighth to beat Mickey Lolich. Don Buford led off with a single and Merv Rettenmund sacrificed. After an intentional pass to Brooks Robinson, Boog Powell doubled to score Buford. Paul Blair then singled to drive in Robinson and Powell with additional runs.

Indians 3, Red Sox 1 at Boston (day game):
Tommy McCraw hit two singles, stole two buses and scored two runs to enable the Indians to defeat the Red Sox, 3-1. Gaylord Perry, who needed relief help from Steve Mingori with one out in the ninth inning, gained credit for his first A. L. victory. McCraw scored in the second inning on an error and crossed the plate in the fourth on a single by Ray Fosse.

Twins 12, Angels 3 at California (night game):
Bobby Darwin, the Twins' red-hot rookie outfielder, smashed his third homer of the year, as well as a double and single, to feature a 12-3 victory over the Angels. After hitting a double to spark a three-run outburst in the second inning, Darwin rapped a homer with two men on base in the seventh and batted in two more runs with a single in the eighth. Bert Blyleven was the winner, receiving credit for his seventh straight victory since last August 27.

White Sox 2, Rangers 1 at Chicago (day game):
An error by Lenny Randle in the ninth inning enabled Carlos May to score the run that gave the White Sox a 2-1 victory over the Rangers. May walked to open the stanza. After a sacrifice and intentional pass to Mike Andrews, Tom Egan stroked a short single to center fielder Joe Lovitto, who fired the ball home, forcing May to hold up at third. Catcher Hal King, noting that Andrews had rounded second, pegged to Randle, who failed to handle the throw and May raced home on the error.

Yankees 3, Brewers 2 at New York (day game):
Light-hitting Gene Michael tripled with the bases loaded in the fifth inning to bring the Yankees a 3-2 victory over the Brewers. The triple was Michael's first since 1970 and only his eighth since breaking into the major leagues in 1966. The Brewers counted their runs on a homer by Johnny Briggs in the ninth.

[DH] A's 4, Royals 0 (night game) / A's 3, Royals 1 at Oakland (night game):
Ken Holtzman, a winter acquisition from the Cubs, pitched a five-hit shutout as the Athletics swept a twi-night doubleheader from the Royals, 4-0 and 3-1. In Holtzman's victory, the A's scored all their runs in the fourth inning on consecutive singles by Joe Rudi, Reggie Jackson, Sal Bando, Mike Epstein and Bobby Brooks, plus a wild pitch. Bob Locker was the winner of the nightcap in relief when the A's broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the eighth on a triple by Rudi, single by Jackson, pass to Bando and single by Epstein.

Dodgers 4, Braves 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Yielding only two hits, Don Sutton pitched the Dodgers to a 4-0 victory over the Braves. Maury Wills tripled in the first inning for his first hit in 19 times at bat this season and scored on an infield out by Bill Buckner. Sutton worked with that slim lead until the ninth when the Dodgers iced the game with three runs, two scoring on a single by Manny Mota.

Astros 7, Reds 5 at Cincinnati (night game):
After building up a 7-0 lead in the first three innings, the Astros defeated the Reds, 7-5, with credit for the victory going to ex-Cardinal Jerry Reuss in his first appearance in a Houston uniform. Cesar Cedeno hit two doubles and a single in the Astros' attack, driving in two runs and scoring one. Reuss gave up nine of the Reds' hits, including a homer by Tony Perez, before being lifted in the seventh.

Phillies 1, Cardinals 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Steve Carlton, facing his former teammates for the first time, pitched the Phillies to a 1-0 victory over the Cardinals in a duel with Bob Gibson. The lone run scored in the sixth inning when Willie Montanez tripled and Deron Johnson singled.

Pirates 5, Cubs 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A two-run homer by Bob Robertson in the eighth inning sent the Pirates on their way to a 5-2 victory over the Cubs. Robertson's blow followed a single by Roberto Clemente and wiped out the Cubs' 2-1 lead. The Pirates added two more runs before the inning was over with the aid of three singles.

Padres 4, Giants 3 at San Diego (night game):
The Padres ripped into Juan Marichal for a pair of two-run homers to defeat the Giants, 4-3. Nate Colbert connected with Johnny Jeter on base in the fourth inning to tie the score at 2-2. After the Giants went ahead again, Derrel Thomas singled in the ninth and Jeter homered to win the game for the Padres.
