Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 5, Yankees 4 at Boston (night game):
Carltno Fisk tripled and Tommy Harper singled in the seventh inning to provide the Red Sox with their deciding run in a 5-4 victory over the Yankees.

Orioles 6, Indians 0 at Cleveland (day game):
Dave McNally allowed only three hits in his second consecutive shutout and Boog Powell smashed a grand-slam homer in the ninth inning as the Orioles defeated the Indians, 6-0. Last season, McNally had only one shutout among his 21 victories. Milt Wilcox matched ciphers with McNally until the eighth inning when the Orioles broke the ice with a run on two walks and a double by Paul Blair. In the ninth, with Steve Mingori on the mound for the Indians, a walk and singles by Don Buford and Mark Belanger added a tally. After another single by Merv Rettenmund loaded the bases, Powell hit his grand slam.

Rangers 7, Angels 6 at Texas (night game):
Playing their first home game in Texas, the Rangers made a winning debut by defeating the Angels, 7-6, before a crowd of 20,105. Frank Howard smashed a tremendous homer for the transplanted Senators in the first inning. Dave Nelson also homered for the Rangers, while Lenny Randle drove in four runs with a double and two singles.

Reds 4, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
A hit batsman in the ninth inning led to the Reds' 4-3 victory over the Braves. With the score tied, 3-3, Bernie Carbo was nicked by a pitch thrown by Ron Reed. Darrel Chaney came in to run for Carbo and after a sacrifice by Ted Uhlaender, Pete Rose singled to drive in the winning run.

Dodgers 12, Padres 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Delighting the opening-night crowd of 30,320, the Dodgers piled up 10 hits, including homers by Jim Lefebvre, Willie Davis and Willie Crawford, to defeat the Padres, 12-2. Frank Robinson, who played only the first two innings before leaving the lineup with a muscle pull, drove in three runs with a pair of singles.

Expos 2, Cardinals 1 at Montreal (night game):
A pinch-double by Jim Fairey, who drove in two runs in the eighth inning, carried the unbeaten Expos to a 2-1 victory over the Cardinals. With one out, John Boccabella singled and advanced to second on an error by Lou Brock. Tim Foli singled, Boccabella stopping at third, before Fairey batted for Bill Stoneman and sent the runners home with his double. The Cardinals stranded 15 men, including three in the ninth after they scored their lone run off reliever Mike Marshall on singles by Matty Alou and Ted Simmons around an error by Ron Hunt.

Mets 2, Cubs 0 at New York (day game):
Burt Hooton, the Cubs' rookie righthander who pitched a no-hitter against the Phillies April 16, ran into a tough competitor in Tom Seaver and lost to the Mets, 2-0. Hooton's hope for a second consecutive no-hitter was spoiled quickly by Bud Harrelson, who doubled as the leadoff man for the Mets in the first inning. The Mets scored their runs in the fifth. Ed Kranepool singled and, after a sacrifice by Jerry Grote, scored on a single by Harrelson, who took second on the throw to the plate. Ken Boswell singled to drive in Harrelson.

Pirates 3, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Vic Davalillo hit a homer in the 10th inning to give the Pirates a 3-2 victory over the Phillies. While Davalillo won the game, Manny Sanguillen and Gene Alley kept the Pirates from losing it. With two out in the ninth, Sanguillen hit a pinch-single and raced home with the tying run on a double by Alley.

Astros 7, Giants 3 at San Francisco (night game):
A bases-loaded triple by Doug Rader and homers by Lee May and Jim Wynn powered the Astros to a 7-3 victory over the Giants, spoiling opening night for the San Francisco turnout of 16,098. Rader's three-bagger in the fifth inning sent the Astros ahead, 5-1. May and Wynn followed with bases-empty roundtrippers for the Astros in the seventh and ninth innings, respectively.
