Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 3, White Sox 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Dave McNally registered his third victory of the season, all via the shutout route, and Boog Powell led the way at bat as the Orioles defeated the White Sox, 3-0. Powell homered with a man on base in the first inning and then doubled and scored on a single by Paul Blair in the third.

Royals 6, Tigers 3 at Detroit (night game):
The Royals, who lost all six of their previous road games this season, broke the traveling jinx with a 6-3 victory over the Tigers. Norm Cash hit a three-run homer for the Tigers to tie the score in the fourth inning. The Royals broke away with two unearned runs in the eighth on a single by Paul Schaal, wild throw by Tom Timmerman on a bunt by Cookie Rojas, and a sacrifice fly by Amos Otis. Lou Piniella homered in the ninth.

Yankees 5, Angels 0 at New York (night game):
Staked to a five-run lead by his Yankee teammates in the first inning, Mel Stottlemyre defeated the Angels, 5-0, for his first victory of the season. Thurman Munson batted in two runs with a double and Rich McKinney drove in two others with a single.

Indians 4, Rangers 2 at Texas (night game):
Although kayoed in the eighth inning, Gaylord Perry received credit for the victory when the Indians defeated the Rangers, 4-2. Ray Fosse provided the Indians' decisive hit, driving in two runs with a double in the sixth. The Rangers loaded the bases with two out against Perry in the eighth and scored twice on a single by Ted Ford and pass to Elliott Maddox before Steve Mingori clamped down to end the threat.

Cubs 12, Braves 1 at Chicago (day game):
Led by Glenn Beckert, who hit a homer, triple and double, the Cubs trounced the Braves, 12-1. Ron Santo and Jim Hickman also homered in the Cubs' 15-hit attack. The Braves got their only run off Bill Hands when Orlando Cepeda doubled and Darrell Evans singled in the seventh inning.

Dodgers 7, Phillies 6 at Los Angeles (night game):
Bill Russell drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning to force in the run that gave the Dodgers a 7-6 victory over the Phillies. After the Dodgers rallied for two runs in the eighth to tie the score, Frank Robinson led off the ninth with his fourth hit of the game. Jim Lefebvre walked and Maury Wills beat out a bunt to load the bases. Chris Short relieved Barry Lersch on the mound for the Phillies and struck out Duke Sims, but then passed Bill Russell to hand the decision to the Dodgers.

Padres 6, Expos 1 at San Diego (night game):
Fred Norman yielded only four hits and pitched the Padres to a 6-1 victory over the Expos. The lefthander was within one out of a shutout when the Expos scored in the ninth inning on a single by Ron Fairly and double by Clyde Mashore. Leron Lee drove in two runs for the Padres with a homer and triple. Norman also accounted for two RBI with a double.

Mets 4, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Except for Bobby Bonds, who hit two triples, Gary Gentry stifled the Giants completely and pitched the Mets to a 4-2 victory. Bonds, after his triples, scored on an infield out by Garry Maddox in the fourth inning and on a sacrifice fly by Ken Henderson in the ninth. The Mets bunched four singles, one of them by Gentry, for two runs in the second and got another marker on a homer by Cleon Jones in sixth. They added one more in the ninth.

Reds 7, Cardinals 6 at St. Louis (night game):
After falling behind, 6-0, the Reds rallied to defeat the Cardinals. 7-6. The Cincy crew picked up two runs in the sixth inning and then exploded for five in the seventh. Pete Rose drove in two tallies with a bases-loaded single and Bobby Tolan followed with a three-run homer for the winning blow. Luis Melendez hit his first major league homer to account for one of the Cardinals' runs in building up their early lead.
