Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 3, Royals 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Ed Kirkpatrick homered with a man on base for the Royals in the eighth inning, but the Orioles came back with a three-run rally in their half to gain a 3-2 victory. Singles by Mark Belanger and Terry Crowley and a wild throw by Paul Schaal on an infield hit by Don Buford produced the Orioles' first run. Merv Rettenmund singled to drive in the tying tally and Boog Powell added the winning run with a sacrifice fly.
Twins 5, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox, who had failed to hit a homer previously this season, finally broke their drouth with a circuit clout by Rico Petrocelli in the sixth inning, but the blow proved meaningless in a 5-2 loss to the Twins. Steve Braun hit a homer with a man on base for the Twins in the fourth and another run followed in the fifth on doubles by Cesar Tovar and Rod Carew. Rich Reese singled an extra run across the plate in the ninth.
Angels 4, Brewers 0 at California (night game):
Nolan Ryan struck out 14 and allowed only three hits in pitching the Angels to a 4-0 victory over the Brewers. The Angels gave Ryan a two-run lead in the second inning on a single by Andy Kosco, triple by Leo Cardenas and wild pitch by Ken Brett. The other pair counted in the third on successive sacrifice flies by Ken Berry and Vada Pinson.
White Sox 2, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
After the unaccustomed luxury of five days' rest, Wilbur Wood took the mound and pitched the White Sox to a 2-1 victory over the Indians. The White Sox scored all their runs off Dick Tidrow in the first inning. Pat Kelly singled, stole second, took third on an infield out and counted on a sacrifice fly by Dick Allen before consecutive singles by Bill Melton, Carlos May and Rick Reichardt added what proved to be the winning run. The Indians' tally in the sixth was unearned on a wild throw by Mike Andrews.
Rangers 2, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
With two out, Joe Coleman committed the unpardonable sin of walking his opposing pitcher, Bill Gogolewski, with the bases loaded in the fourth inning to force in what proved to be the Rangers' winning run in a 2-1 victory over the Tigers. Ted Ford homered for the Rangers' initial tally in the second. A walk, error, sacrifice, popup and intentional pass preceded Goglewski's appearance at the plate in the fourth. Coleman threw three straight balls, came back with two strikes and then was low on his sixth pitch.
A's 3, Yankees 1 at Oakland (night game):
Catcher Dave Duncan drove in two runs in support of Ken Holtzman, who yielded only four hits and pitched the Athletics to a 3-1 victory over the Yankees. Duncan singled to plate the second of the A's runs in the fourth inning and then homered to add the clinching tally in the seventh.
Astros 3, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
Larry Dierker pitched a five-hitter and Jim Wynn drove in all of the Astros' runs to account for a 3-0 victory over the Cubs. Roger Metzger singled in the first inning and, after a wild pitch by Burt Hooton and an infield out, scored on a grounder by Wynn. Cesar Cedeno was hit by a pitch in the fifth and Wynn followed with a homer to wrap up the victory.
Reds 5, Pirates 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
A bases-loaded single by Tony Perez with one out in the 10th inning scored Pete Rose and gave the Reds a 5-4 victory over the Pirates. Rose led off with a single and Joe Morgan walked. After Bobby Tolan sacrificed, the Pirates walked Johnny Bench intentionally to set the stage for Perez' appearance at the plate.
Expos 3, Dodgers 1 at Montreal (night game):
A double by Ron Hunt, who drove in two runs in the third inning, enabled the Expos to defeat the Dodgers, 3-1. Ron Woods and Terry Humphrey singled and Bill Stoneman sacrificed before Hunt, who had been in a slump with a .185 batting average, delivered his double. Willie Davis homered for the Dodgers, who were held under four runs for the first time in 19 games in Jarry Park over four seasons.
Padres 6, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
While Steve Arlin pitched a shutout, the Padres whacked Jerry Koosman for six runs and defeated the Mets, 6-0. Nate Colbert started the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning. Ollie Brown and Fred Kendall singled and Jerry Morales doubled for another run in the fourth. After an intentional pass to Dave Campbell, Thomas doubled to clear the bases.
Phillies 3, Giants 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Don Money singled in the ninth inning and, running on a count of 3-and-2, scored from first base on a double by Mike Anderson to bring the Phillies a 3-2 victory over the Giants. Dave Kingman knocked in the Giants' runs with a triple in the first inning. The Phillies got one back on a single by Tommy Hutton and double by Money in the fourth and tied the score in the fifth when Denny Doyle doubled, Bill Champion sacrificed and Tim McCarver beat out an infield hit.
Braves 2, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Hank Aaron hit his fifth homer of season and 634th of his career, connecting off Bob Gibson after a single by Felix Millan in the first inning, to power the Braves to a 2-1 victory over the Cardinals. Singles by Lou Brock, Ted Sizemore and Joe Torre produced the Cardinals' run in the ninth.
