Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 9, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Aided by six double plays, Dick Drago pitched the Royals to a 9-1 victory over the Orioles. The twin-killings gave the Royals a total of 10 for two consecutive games, tying the major league record. Ed Kirkpatrick hit a homer and Lou Piniella drove in three runs with a pair of singles to support Drago. Johnny Oates saved the Orioles from a shutout, hitting his first major league homer in the fifth inning.

Twins 3, Red Sox 2 at Boston (day game):
Harmon Killebrew drove in one run with an infield out in the sixth inning and batted two more across the plate with a double in the eighth to account for the Twins' scoring in a 3-2 victory over the Red Sox. Jim Perry singled in the eighth and stopped at third on a double by Rod Carew before Killebrew hit his two-bagger.

Angels 2, Brewers 0 at California (day game):
The fastest game in Angels' history, one hour, 31 minutes, saw Andy Messersmith beat the Brewers, 2-0, in a pitching duel with Jim Lonborg. Messersmith allowed two singles, both by Rick Auerbach, who was the Brewers' only baserunner. The Angels' five hits off Lonborg included a homer by Vada Pinson.

Indians 12, White Sox 0 at Cleveland (day game):
Piling up 18 hits, the Indians overwhelmed the White Sox, 12-0, behind the pitching of Gaylord Perry. The run total was the largest for the Tribe since a 13-4 victory over the Senators September 10, 1970, and the winning margin was their biggest since beating the Angels, 14-1, August 29, 1970.

Tigers 4, Rangers 1 at Detroit (day game):
The Tigers scored three runs off Rich Hand in the first inning and defeated the Rangers, 4-1. Hand, making his first start since being recalled from the minors, gave up a single by Aurelio Rodriguez and two walks to load the bases with two out in the opening frame. Willie Horton singled, driving in two runs, and Dick McAuliffe also singled to drive in the third marker. Hal King homered for the Rangers' tally.

A's 4, Yankees 1 at Oakland (day game):
Reggie Jackson drove in two runs with a homer in the fifth inning and then singled and scored on a double by Sal Bando in the eighth to lead the Athletics' attack in a 4-1 victory over the Yankees. Bob Locker saved the game for Catfish Hunter, coming in with two men on base in the ninth and striking out Rich McKinney.

Cubs 6, Astros 4 at Chicago (day game):
Carmen Fanzone, subbing for Ron Santo, who was out of action with a fracture of his wrist, smashed two homers and drove in four runs as the Cubs defeated the Astros, 6-4. Jim Hickman accounted for the Cubs' first two tallies, hitting a homer in the first inning after Billy Williams was safe on an error. Fanzone followed with a solo swat in the second and connected for the circuit again with two men on base in the third.

Pirates 8, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (day game):
The first Pirates' pitcher to hurl the route this season, Steve Blass yielded only four hits and defeated the Reds, 8-1. Joe Morgan homered to save the Reds from being shut out. Manny Sanguillen, who drove in two runs, led the Pirates at bat with two doubles and a single.

Padres 6, Mets 2 at New York (day game):
The Padres, who had lost to Tom Seaver 10 straight times over his career, finally ended the mastery of the ace righthander by defeating the Mets, 6-2. Ed Kranepool accounted for the Mets' runs with a homer, but Nate Colbert was more potent for the Padres against Seaver, driving in two runs with a double in the sixth inning and two more with a homer in the eighth. As a result, Seaver was handed his first loss of the season and was turned back in a bid for the 100th victory of his career with the Mets.

Giants 3, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (day game):
With the help of Chris Speier, who hit a two-run homer, Sam McDowell was able to pitch the Giants past the Phillies, 3-1, for his fourth straight victory. McDowell helped himself at bat, hitting a single before Speier connected for the circuit in the fifth inning.

Cardinals 4, Braves 2 at St. Louis (night game):
A Bat Night crowd of 40,754 saw Joe Torre drive in three runs with a sacrifice fly and homer to lead the Cardinals to a 4-2 victory over the Braves. Hank Aaron smashed the 645th homer of his career for the Braves in the eighth inning.
