Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 6, Angels 3 at California (night game):
Although outhit, 11-9, the Yankees made more effective use of their bats and defeated the Angels, 6-3. Ken McMullen had four hits and Vada Pinson three for the Angels, but their only earned run came on a homer by Leo Cardenas in the fourth inning. Ron Blomberg batted in one run with an infield out and another with a homer for the Yankees.

White Sox 4, Orioles 3 at Chicago (night game):
After scoring their first three runs on homers by Bill Melton and Dick Allen, the White Sox added a tally in the fifth inning on singles by Rich Morales and Pat Kelly, around a sacrifice, to defeat the Orioles. 4-3. Wilbur Wood was the winner with the help of Steve Kealey, who put down an Orioles' rally in the ninth.

Rangers 3, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Striking back at his former teammates, Ted Ford hit a homer to help the Rangers defeat the Indians, 3-1. The Rangers scored initally in the first inning on singles by Elliott Maddox and Dave Nelson and an infield out. Ford followed with his homer in the second to account for the deciding run. An insurance tally went on the board in the eighth when Nelson tripled and Dick Billings singled.

Brewers 4, Twins 3 at Minnesota (night game):
The Brewers and Twins battled 21 innings to a 3-3 tie in a game that was suspended because of the league's 1 a.m. (local time) curfew. The contest was completed prior to the next day's regularly-scheduled game. After pinch-hitter Tommie Reynolds drove in two runs for the Brewers with a bases-loaded single in the seventh to tie the score, the clubs exchanged ciphers through the remainder of the three-hour, 35-minute marathon.

Red Sox 7, A's 6 at Oakland (night game):
The Red Sox, who had been in a slugging slump since the start of the season, broke out with three homers, including two by Tommy Harper, whose second smash of the game in the 12th liming beat the Athletics, 7-6. After Rick Miller hit the first homer for the Red Sox in the second inning, Harper came up in that same stanza with two men on base and also connected for the circuit. Dave Duncan whacked a three-run drive for the A's in the fourth. With Harper's winning wallop in the 12th, the Red Sox equaled their home run total for the previous 17 games of the year.

Cubs 2, Braves 0 at Atlanta (night game):
The Cubs, who outscored the Braves, 32-2, in a sweep of a recent three-game series in Chicago, continued their mastery with a 2-0 victory behind the five-hit hurling of Bill Hands. The Cubs scored their first run when Rick Monday doubled and Jose Cardenal singled in the second inning and added the other tally on a single by Randy Hundley and double by Glenn Beckert in the third.

Reds 5, Cardinals 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Reds bunched three hits with an error for three runs in the first inning and added two more on a homer by Joe Morgan in the fourth to defeat the Cardinals, 5-4. Donn Clendenon hit his first homer in a Cardinals' uniform. Ross Grimsley, recently recalled from Indianapolis, gained his first victory of the season for the Reds, who also employed three relief pitchers before the game was over.

Pirates 4, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Coming through with his first hit of the season, Milt May drove in the tie-breaking run with a pinch-single in the ninth inning to enable the Pirates to defeat the Astros, 4-2. With the score tied, 2-2, Manny Sanguillen singled for the Pirates in the ninth and Bob Robertson walked. May, hitless in eight previous trips this year, then came up with two out and delivered his deciding single. Robertson took third and counted an extra run on a wild pitch.

Padres 5, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
A homer by Leron Lee with two men on base in the fifth inning proved the winning blow for the Padres in a 5-3 victory over the Expos.

Mets 2, Giants 1 at New York (night game):
Willie Mays was in a Mets' uniform for the first time, but the 41-year-old superstar, who was obtained from the Giants, sat on the bench and watched while his new teammates defeated his old club, 2-1. The Giants scored their run on a freak homer by Chris Speier, who hit a drive that glanced off center fielder Tommie Agee's glove and popped over the fence in the sixth inning. While the crowd of 44,271 chanted for Mays, the Mets sent up John Milner as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning. Milner walked, took second on an infield out and scored the tying run on a double by Ken Boswell. Then, in the ninth, after a walk to Cleon Jones, a single by Jim Fregosi and an intentional pass to Ed Kranepool loaded the bases, Jerry Grote singled to drive in the winning run.

Dodgers 6, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Undefeated Don Sutton brought his record to 5-0 by pitching the Dodgers to a 6-1 victory over the Phillies. However, the ace righthander's streak of 31 consecutive scoreless innings came to an end in the ninth when Greg Luzinski doubled to drive in Willie Montanez with the Phillies' run. Frank Robinson homered for the Dodgers with two men on base in the fifth and Bill Russell added a solo swat in the sixth.
