Today's scores and summaries:
Angels 6, Yankees 2 at California (day game):
Leroy Stanton hit his first two major league homers in successive times at bat to highlight the Angels' 6-2 victory over the Yankees. Fritz Peterson, who started for the Yankees and was kayoed in the fifth inning, was tagged with his sixth straight defeat. Stanton hit his first homer off Fred Beene in the sixth and rapped his second off Jim Roland in the eighth.
White Sox 4, Orioles 1 at Chicago (day game):
The White Sox ended Dave McNally's domination and defeated the Orioles, 4-1. The lefthander, who had beaten the White Sox five straight times since September 2, 1969, was tagged for nine hits in seven innings, including a single and homer by Rich Morales, who drove in two runs.
Indians 4, Rangers 3 at Cleveland (day game):
Chris Chambliss, who entered the game in the ninth inning as a defensive replacement at first base, came to bat in the 10th and hit his first homer of the season to give the Indians a 4-3 victory over the Rangers.
[DH] Tigers 3, Royals 2 (day game) / Royals 8, Tigers 4 at Kansas City (day game):
After walking three straight times, Dick McAuliffe smashed a two-run homer in the eighth inning to provide the Tigers with a 3-2 victory in the opener of a doubleheader, but the Royals ended a five-game losing streak by winning the nightcap, 8-4. Willie Horton also homered for the Tigers in the lidlifter to account for their first run. The Royals trailed in the second game, 4-2, going into the fifth inning when Freddie Patek walked, Amos Otis singled and Richie Scheinblum hit his first major league homer since whacking one while with the Indians July 20, 1969.
Twins 4, Brewers 2 at Minnesota (day game):
Helping himself to his fourth straight victory, Jim Kaat hit a two-run homer for the Twins to beat the Brewers, 4-2. Rod Carew drove in Cesar Tovar with a single in the first inning and a grounder in the third to account for the Twins' other tallies.
A's 6, Red Sox 5 at Oakland (day game):
A throwing error by Duane Josephson with the bases loaded in the ninth inning enabled the Athletics to defeat the Red Sox, 6-5. Josephson had tied the score at 5-5 with a two-run homer in the eighth, but after the A's filled the sacks in the ninth, the catcher-turned-first baseman fielded a tap by Sal Bando and threw badly to the plate, allowing pinch-runner Blue Moon Odom to score for the A's.
Braves 2, Cubs 1 at Atlanta (day game):
Phil Niekro, the only Braves' pitcher to hurl the route this season, did it for the fifth time and beat the Cubs, 2-1, on a homer by Darrell Evans in the ninth inning. The Braves scored their initial run in the first on doubles by Felix Millan and Earl Williams. Jose Cardenal tied the score with a homer for the Cubs in the second.
[DH] Reds 4, Cardinals 3 (day game) / Reds 2, Cardinals 0 at Cincinnati (day game):
Celebrating his 30th birthday, Tony Perez knocked in all of the Reds' runs in a 4-3 and 2-0 sweep of a doubleheader with the Cardinals. In the lidlifter, the veteran slugger drove in two runs with a double in the third inning and then won the game for the Reds with a two-run homer in the eighth. Coming back in the nightcap, Perez singled a run across in the first and smashed a homer in the sixth. Tom Hall, who pitched a shutout on a three-hitter and struck out 12, turned in the first complete game by the Reds' staff this season.
Astros 7, Pirates 6 at Houston (day game):
After scoring seven runs in the first two innings, the Astros held on to defeat the Pirates, 7-6. Jim Wynn singled and Cesar Cedeno and Bob Watson hit back-to-back homers in the first. A single by Doug Rader and a pair of walks with two out paved the way for the Astros' other runs in the second. Wynn singled for one run, two others scored on an error by Dave Cash and what proved to be the winning run counted on a single by Watson.
Expos 9, Padres 3 at Montreal (day game):
Mike Torrez gained his third straight victory when the Expos ended a four-game losing streak by defeating the Padres, 9-3. Bob Bailey drove in three of the Expos' runs with a single and double. Tim Foli batted in two with a double. In the seventh inning, Mike Jorgensen homered with a man on base and Ron Fairly followed with a solo swat. Garry Jestadt hit his first major league homer for the Padres.
Mets 5, Giants 4 at New York (day game):
Playing his first game with the Mets, Willie Mays homered against his former teammates in the fifth inning to beat the Giants, 5-4. Mays, who batted in the leadoff spot, walked in the first inning and, after two more passes loaded the bases, Rusty Staub hit a grand-slam homer off Sam McDowell. The Giants came back to tie the score in the fifth with a walk, triple by Bernie Williams, double by Chris Speier and homer by Tito Fuentes, but Mays then earned a thunderous ovation from the crowd of 35,505 with his game-winning blow off Don Carrithers in the Mets' half.
