Today's scores and summaries:
A's 2, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Yielding only two hits, Blue Moon Odom pitched the Athletics to a 2-1 victory over the Angels. The A's scored a run in the first inning on a walk to Bert Campaneris, a theft of second and single by Joe Rudi. Angel Mangual hit his first homer of the season in the fourth to produce what proved to be the winning run. The Angels counted in the sixth on a pass to Ken Berry, forceout by Vada Pinson and double by Bob Oliver.
White Sox 4, Twins 3 at Chicago (night game):
With last-out help from Terry Forster, Wilbur Wood gained his sixth victory when the White Sox defeated the Twins, 4-3. The White Sox counted twice off Jim Perry in the first inning on a single by Pat Kelly, double by Mike Andrews, a wild pitch and double by Bill Melton. Dick Allen drove in two other runs with a bases-loaded single in the second. Harmon Killebrew homered for the Twins. Wood was lifted after Steve Brye doubled in the ninth and Forster struck out Eric Soderholm to end the game.
Orioles 3, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
Jim Palmer served up homers to Gates Brown and Willie Horton in the first two innings but then pitched the Orioles to a 3-2 victory over the Tigers. In addition, Palmer tripled in the seventh and scored the deciding run on a single by Don Buford.
Royals 5, Rangers 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Lou Piniella singled in the eighth inning and raced home on a double by Cookie Rojas to score the Royals' deciding run in a 5-4 victory over the Rangers.
Astros 8, Braves 2 at Houston (night game):
Without getting a ball out of the infield, the Astros scored three runs in the second inning and went on to beat the Braves, 8-2, behind the seven-hit pitching of Dave Roberts. In the second, Bob Watson walked and Tommy Helms and Roberts rapped infield hits to load the bases. Roger Metzger walked to force in the first run. Jimmy Stewart then beat out a grounder to Felix Millan, Helms scoring, and when Hank Aaron threw to second in an unsuccessful effort to catch Metzger, who had overrun the bag, Roberts raced home with the Astros third run.
Mets 5, Expos 3 at New York (night game):
Homers by Tommie Agee and Jim Fregosi accounted for all of the Mets' runs in a 5-3 victory over the Expos. Agee's drive followed a pass to Ken Boswell in the fifth inning. Fregosi connected after a single by Rusty Staub and walk to Cleon Jones in the eighth.
Phillies 4, Cubs 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies, who had lost to Fergie Jenkins 11 straight times since September 13, 1969, turned and beat the Cubs' ace, 4-0. Woodie Fryman pitched a shutout on a six-hitter and drove in two runs with a single. Mike Anderson and Willie Montanez homered to produce the other tallies.
Pirates 4, Cardinals 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Bob Gibson was handed his fifth straight setback when Roberto Clemente homered with two men on base in the seventh inning to power the Pirates past the Cardinals, 4-1. Dave Cash singled and Vic Davalillo was safe on an error ahead of Clemente's clout. Dock Ellis, who pitched the route on a five-hitter, gained his fourth victory in succession.
Dodgers 2, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Pinch-hitter Chris Cannizzaro beat out a grounder with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning to drive in the run that gave the Dodgers a 2-1 victory over the Padres. Willie Davis opened the inning with a double and, after Frank Robinson flied out, Manny Mota and Billy Grabarkewitz walked. Cannizzaro then grounded deep to the left-hand side of shortstop Enzo Hernandez, who was unable to make a play at any base.
