Today's scores and summaries:

A's 4, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Ken Holtzman scattered eight hits to post his second shutout of the season and also drove in two runs with a single as the Athletics defeated the Angels, 4-0.

Twins 8, White Sox 1 at Chicago (day game):
Harmon Killebrew and Danny Thompson provided the big blows for the Twins in an 8-1 victory over the White Sox, who were stopped on their six-game winning streak. Killebrew homered with a man on base in the first inning and Thompson tripled with the bases loaded in the seventh.

Indians 2, Yankees 1 at Cleveland (night game):
A pass to Jack Brohamer with the bases loaded in the ninth inning handed the Indians a 2-1 victory over the Yankees. Bobby Murcer homered for the Yankees' run in the first and the Indians tied the score in their half on a double by Alex Johnson and single by Graig Nettles. Tommy McCraw led off the ninth with a triple. After intentional passes to Ray Fosse and Buddy Bell, Brohamer also drew a walk from Fred Beene to force in the winning run.

Tigers 6, Orioles 1 at Detroit (night game):
Mickey Lolich allowed only four hits and pitched the Tigers past the Orioles, 6-1, for his seventh victory in eight decisions. Tom Haller iced the game for his batterymate by smashing a homer with two men on base in the eighth inning for his first A. L. hit. Mark Belanger homered for the Orioles' run.

Rangers 4, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Catcher's interference in the 18th inning led to an unearned run that gave the Rangers a 4-3 victory over the Royals in a four-hour, 56-minute marathon. With one out in the 18th, Joe Lovitto was awarded first base when catcher Dennis Paepke interfered with his swing. Jim Panther bunted and when Ted Abernathy threw wildly, Lovitto moved to third. After an intentional pass to Jim Driscoll, Tom Murphy relieved Abernathy. Toby Harrah then hit a bouncer off Murphy's glove for a forceout at second as Lovitto scored.

Brewers 4, Red Sox 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Winning for the first time in a Brewers' uniform, Jim Lonborg received credit for a 4-1 victory over his former Red Sox teammates. Lonborg gave up seven hits in 7 2/3 innings before yielding the mound to Ken Sanders. George Scott started the Brewers' scoring with a two-run homer in the first. Two other tallies followed in the sixth, one of them crossing the plate on a single by Lonborg.

Astros 9, Braves 0 at Houston (night game):
Larry Dierker, who yielded only four hits and retired 16 of the last 17 batters, pitched the Astros to a 9-0 victory over the Braves. Ralph Garr had three of the Braves' hits. Carmen Fanzone homered for the Cubs' other run, while Tommy Hutton hit the first of his major league career for the Phillies. In the ninth, Billy Williams doubled and stopped at third on an infield hit by Jim Hickman. A walk, sacrifice, wild pitch and sacrifice fly by Garry Jestadt added the other run in the eighth.
