White Sox 3, Angels 1 at Chicago (night game):
Wilbur Wood. who helped himself at bat with two singles, gained his seventh victory when the White Sox defeated the Angels. 3-1. Wood singled and scored on a single by Pat Kelly and a sacrifice fly by Mike Andrews in the third inning. The veteran knuckleballer then drove in a run with his second single in the fourth. Syd O'Brien hit a pinch-homer for the Angels' tally in the eighth. Wood, pitching with only two days of rest for the 10th time this season, was lifted in the ninth after Bob Oliver doubled and the White Sox used both Steve Kealey and Terry Forster to wind up the game.

Indians 2, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
A victim of his own errors, Les Cain was the loser when the Indians defeated the Tigers, 2-1, behind the five-hit pitching of Gaylord Perry. Cain also allowed only five hits before being lifted in the seventh inning. In the first, the Tigers' lefty fielded a tap by Tommy McCraw and threw wildly to first, allowing the batter to reach third and be in position to score on a sacrifice fly by Eddie Leon. The Tigers picked up their run in the home half on a double by Aurelio Rodriguez and single by Norm Cash. However in the fifth, Cain, covering first, failed to hold the throw on McCraw's grounder to Cash. Chris Chambliss, running for McCraw, who had to leave the game with a strained leg muscle, took third on a single by Leon and scored the deciding run when Alex Johnson forced Leon.

Royals 16, A's 1 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals set club records for most hits and most runs in one game when they piled up 20 hits and crushed the Athletics, 16-1. The former Royal highs were 19 hits and 15 runs against the Angels May 4, 1969. The Kaycee crew's attack included two homers by John Mayberry and one each by Lou Piniella and Amos Otis to tie the club mark for most circuit clouts in one game. Otis, in addition to his homer, had three other hits and drove in a total of five runs.

Brewers 4, Orioles 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Orioles' string of 10 straight victories in Milwaukee over the 1970-71 seasons came to an end in their first 1972 appearance in County Stadium when the Brewers beat Dave McNally, 4-2. Billy Conigliaro batted in two runs with a single in the first inning and then walked and scored on a double by Mike Ferraro in the third. Rick Auerbach singled and Johnny Briggs doubled for the Brewers' final tally in the seventh.

Yankees 6, Red Sox 0 at New York (night game):
Mel Stottlemyre won his fourth straight game and posted his second consecutive shutout, pitching the Yankees to a 6-0 victory over the Red Sox. Marty Pattin, who was the Red Sox loser, suffered his fifth defeat in succession.

Rangers 2, Twins 1 at Texas (night game):
A crowd of 18,902, largest at Arlington Stadium since the home opener, saw the Rangers defeat the Twins, 2-1, behind the five-hit pitching of Bill Gogolewski. The Twins scored their run in the fourth inning on singles by Harmon Killebrew, Steve Braun and Bobby Darwin, but the Rangers came back with their winning pair in the fifth on a single by Joe Lovitto, double by Lenny Randle, infield out by Toby Harrah and single by Elliott Maddox.

Dodgers 2, Astros 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
A double by Bill Buckner, driving in two runs in the third inning, enabled Claude Osteen to pitch the Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the Astros in a duel with Don Wilson. The Astros' run scored in the first on a single by Jim Wynn, a wild pitch and a throwing error by Steve Garvey in handling a grounder by Cesar Cedeno. In the third, Duke Sims walked and was forced by Bill Russell. Osteen helped himself with a single. After Bobby Valentine was retired, Buckner rapped his decisive double.

Mets 8, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Jerry Grote and Rusty Staub batted the Mets to an 8-3 victory over the Phillies. Grote hit two homers, driving in four runs, and Staub knocked in three runs with a homer and single as the Mets posted their eighth straight victory.

Pirates 8, Expos 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Willie Stargell drove in four runs with a homer, double and single and Bob Moose pitched a four-hitter as the Pirates defeated the Expos, 8-0. The crowd of 41,765, largest since opening day in Pittsburgh, was boosted by hordes of youngsters who came to receive souvenir imitation World Series rings.

Reds 1, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
The Reds extended their winning streak to nine games by defeating the Padres, 1-0, behind the four-hit pitching of Jim McGlothlin, who turned in both his first victory and first complete game of the season. The Reds scored their run off Clay Kirby in the first inning on a single by Pete Rose, pass to Joe Morgan, infield out by Bobby Tolan and sacrifice fly by Johnny Bench.

Giants 7, Braves 6 at San Francisco (night game):
Ending a seven-game losing streak, the Giants erupted for six runs in the seventh inning and defeated the Braves, 7-6. Two-run doubles by Bobby Bonds and Garry Maddox were the biggest blows in the uprising that beat the Braves, who suffered their fourth straight setback.

Cardinals 4, Cubs 3 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals snapped their eight-game losing streak when Joe Torre smashed a three-run homer in the fifth inning to defeat the Cubs, 4-3. A triple by Ted Simmons led to the Cardinals' first run in the fourth. Ted Sizemore doubled in the fifth and Matty Alou singled before Torre decided the outcome with his homer.
