Broberg was lifted after giving up a single by Danny Thompson, run-scoring double by Rod Carew and a walk with one out. Paul retired the last two batters. Jim Perry, who started for the Twins, helped beat himself with two errors, resulting in a pair of unearned runs.

[DH] Mets 3, Phillies 1 (night game) / Mets 2, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
The rampaging Mets extended their winning streak to 10 games by sweeping a twi-night doubleheader with the Phillies, 3-1 and 2-1. Jon Matlack, Willie Mays and Tommie Agee were the heroes of the triumph in the opener. A single by Jerry Grote, sacrifice by Matlack and double by Mays produced the Mets' initial run in the third inning, Mays' RBI was the 1,861st of his career, moving him into third place on the N. L.'s all-time list. Matlack, who pitched a five-hitter, doubled with one out in the eighth. Mays was handed an intentional pass. After Bud Harrelson flied out, Agee doubled to drive in Matlack and Mays for the winning margin. Jerry Koosman was the winner of the nightcap in relief of Ray Sadecki. The Mets scored their first run in the second inning on a double by Rusty Staub and single by Ed Kranepool. Wayne Garrett walked in the fourth and counted what proved to be the deciding run on singles by Kranepool and Sadecki. The Phillies forced the exit of Sadecki in the fifth when Larry Bowa doubled and Terry Harmon singled. Koosman relieved and emerged at the expense of only one run on a sacrifice fly by Willie Montanez. Tug McGraw took over in the ninth and saved the game after Koosman had walked Bowa.

After Orlando Cepeda struck out, Williams came through with his homer to enable the Braves to snap their four-game losing streak.
Cardinals 3, Cubs 2 at St. Louis (day game):
After hitting his first homer of the season in the eighth inning, Matty Alou beat out a bunt as the key of a two-run rally that enabled the Cardinals to defeat the Cubs, 3-2. Ted Sizemore singled with one out in the ninth. Alou followed with his safe bunt and when Carmen Fanzone threw wildly to first, Sizemore scored and Alou scampered to third. The Cubs then walked Joe Torre intentionally, but Ted Simmons wrecked the move with a single that sent Alou home with the winning run.
