Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 6, Orioles 5 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox broke a five-game losing streak when Rico Petrocelli singled in the 10th inning, scoring Reggie Smith, to beat the Orioles, 6-5. Smith walked and took second on a sacrifice by Duane Josephson to pave the way for the winning marker.

Brewers 3, Tigers 0 at Detroit (night game):
The Brewers, who snapped a string of 25 scoreless innings with a homer by Johnny Briggs, defeated the Tigers, 3-0, behind the four-hit pitching of Jim Lonborg. Joe Coleman handcuffed the Brewers until the seventh when George Scott singled and Briggs hit his homer. The other tally counted off Fred Scherman in the ninth on a double by Billy Conigliaro and single by Ellie Rodriguez.

Indians 3, Yankees 0 at New York (night game):
Gaylord Perry won a duel with Mel Stottlemyre and pitched the Indians to a 3-0 victory over the Yankees. Stottlemyre extended his scoreless pitching streak to 25 innings before the Indians erupted for their runs in the eighth. Perry led off with a double, advanced on a sacrifice and scored the first run on a wild pitch. After a single by Eddie Leon and two walks, Ray Fosse clinched the victory for his batterymate with a two-run single.

A's 3, Angels 2 at Oakland (night game):
Relieving in the ninth inning, Eddie Fisher threw only one pitch and was tagged with the defeat when Reggie Jackson smashed a homer to give the Athletics a 3-2 victory over the Angels.

White Sox 2, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
With a double by Carlos May as the key blow, the White Sox scored twice in the first inning and defeated the Rangers, 2-1. Pat Kelly led off with a safe bunt, took second on sacrifice by Mike Andrews and crossed the plate on May's double. Bill Melton then singled to score May. Don Mincher homered for the Rangers' run.

Cubs 2, Mets 1 at Chicago (day game):
The Mets were stopped on their 11-game winning streak when they were checked by Fergie Jenkins and lost to the Cubs, 2-1. The Cubs scored their first run off Gary Gentry in the fourth inning on a walk to Jim Hickman and singles by Paul Popovich and Ken Rudolph. A pass to Bud Harrelson, sacrifice by Ken Boswell and single by Rusty Staub produced the tying run for the Mets in the seventh, but the Cubs beat reliever Tug McGraw in the eighth when Hickman singled and Popovich doubled.

Braves 2, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Phil Niekro, who helped himself with the sixth homer of his major league career, pitched the Braves to a 2-1 victory over the Reds. Niekro gave up the Reds' run in the first inning on a triple by Pete Rose and single by Joe Morgan before hitting his homer to tie the score in the third. The Braves broke the deadlock in the eighth when Dusty Baker and Darrell Evans singed and Marty Perez drove in Baker with a double.

Dodgers 8, Giants 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
Manager Alston said, "It was about the wildest game I've ever seen," after the Dodgers defeated the Giants, 8-5. There were eight errors in the game, five by the Giants, who committed three of them in the sixth inning when the Dodgers scored five runs. Frank Robinson, who whacked a homer in the second inning, hit another to lead off the sixth. The Dodgers had only one other hit during the frame -- a double by Manny Mota. Don Carrithers, Giants' reliever, tied the N. L. record for most wild pitches in one inning, 3, and the Dodgers tied another league mark for most sacrifices in one inning, also 3.

Expos 6, Phillies 2 at Montreal (night game):
Led by Mike Jorgensen, who drove in two runs with a homer and another with a single, the Expos defeated the Phillies, 6-2. Ron Fairly also homered for the Expos.

[DH] Astros 7, Padres 0 (night game) / Astros 2, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Tom Griffin enjoyed several "firsts" pitching the opener of a twi-night doubleheader as the Astros defeated the Padres, 7-0 and 2-1. Griffin gained his first victory for the Astros since 1970, pitched his first shutout in two years, turned in his first complete game of the current campaign and homered for his first hit of the season. Bob Watson and Doug Rader also homered, Rader's blow coming with two men on base. In the nightcap, Ken Forsch pitched the distance for the first time this year. The Padres counted their run in the first inning on a triple by Leron Lee and single by Nate Colbert. Watson tied the score with a homer in the second and the Astros then added their deciding run in the sixth on a single by Watson, infield out by Rader and single by Tommy Helms.

Pirates 6, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Steve Blass, who pitched an 11-hit shutout of the Cardinals May 17, gave up 11 more hits in a return appearance but was a winner again when the Pirates batted their way to a 6-2 victory. Oddly, the Pirates were able to win although Willie Stargell and Al Oliver went hitless nine times between them and Roberto Clemente grounded into three double plays. However, Clemente collected two hits and drove in one run. The Pirates bunched four hits with an error and a sacrifice for three runs in the second inning and added three others on two singles, a walk and two errors in the fourth.
