Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, Red Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
Getting a break on an error by Doug Griffin, the Orioles scored four runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Red Sox, 4-1. Terry Crowley singled with one out in the eighth, Don Baylor doubled and Bobby Grich walked to load the bases. Paul Blair then grounded to Rico Petrocelli, who threw to second in an attempt to start a double play, but Griffin failed to hold the ball, allowing Crowley to score. Brooks Robinson walked to force in the go-ahead tally and Andy Etchebarren followed with a single to add a pair of insurance runs.

Tigers 5, Brewers 3 at Detroit (night game):
A single by Aurelio Rodriguez with the bases loaded and two out in the eighth inning drove in two runs and gave the Tigers a 5-3 victory over the Brewers. Chuck Seelbach, the third of four pitchers used by the Tigers, received credit for his first major league victory. The Brewers collected only two hits in the game, but scored three runs in the sixth to knot the count at 3-3. Les Cain issued three passes to load the bases and yielded the mound to Fred Scherman, who walked Curt Motton to force in the first run. Mike Ferraro followed with a single for the Brewers' first hit to drive in the tying pair.

Twins 1, Royals 0 at Kansas City (night game):
The Twins snapped their four-game losing streak when Danny Thompson doubled in the 12th inning and scored on a single by Rod Carew to beat the Royals, 1-0. Dick Drago, who pitched the route for the Royals, struck out 13 and yielded only four hits until the fatal frame. Jim Kaat was the Twins' winner with the aid of Wayne Granger, who retired the Royals in their half of the 12th.

Yankees 4, Indians 2 at New York (night game):
Making his first start, Rich Hinton picked up his first victory in a New York uniform and Sparky Lyle received credit for his seventh save when the Yankees defeated the Indians, 4-2. The Yankees scored twice in the sixth inning on singles by Johnny Callison and Bobby Murcer, sacrifice fly by Roy White, an infield out and a single by Thurman Munson. A walk to White, infield out, the second RBI single of the game by Munson, another single by Rich McKinney and double by Horace Clarke added the deciding pair in the eighth.

Angels 6, A's 5 at Oakland (night game):
Vida Blue, making his first appearance with the Athletics since ending his celebrated holdout, pitched one inning in relief, gave up two runs and was charged with a 6-5 loss to the Angels. Don Rose, who made his first start and gained his first major league victory, entered the record books as only the seventh player in history and second pitcher to homer on the first pitch in his first time at bat. After two-run homers by Joe Rudi and Mike Epstein in the fifth inning gave the A's a 4-4 tie, Blue took the mound in the sixth and walked Art Kusnyer on four pitches to start off. After a wild pitch, Rose fouled out, but Sandy Alomar walked. Ken Berry and Vada Pinson followed with singles, each driving in a run to put the Angels ahead. 6-4. Dave Duncan homered in the A's half of the sixth, but Steve Barber took over for Rose in the seventh and preserved the rookie's victory.

White Sox 5, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Exploding for all their runs in the first inning, the White Sox defeated the Rangers, 5-1. Mike Andrews and Carlos May singled and Dick Allen doubled to produce the first run. After Bill Melton walked to load the bases, Rick Reichardt cleared the sacks with a double. Rich Morales then singled to drive in Reichardt. Dick Billings saved Rangers from a shutout by hitting a homer off Tom Bradley with two out in the ninth.

Cubs 5, Mets 1 at Chicago (day game):
While Burt Hooton pitched a five-hitter, Jose Cardenal smashed two homers for the Cubs and Billy Williams hit one to beat the Mets, 5-1. Cardenal connected for the circuit after a pass to Hooton in the third inning and duplicated that blow following a walk to Ken Rudolph in the fifth. After two outs in the fifth, Williams added his round-tripper. Willie Mays had two hits for the Mets in three official trips and scored their run on a double by Bud Harrelson in the eighth inning.

Braves 4, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
Brushing off homers by Joe Hague and Johnny Bench, the Braves came back to defeat the Reds, 4-2. After the Reds took a 2-0 lead, the Braves pulled even in the fifth. Darrell Evans doubled and counted on a single by Mike Lum, who took second on the throw to the plate and scored on a single by Marty Perez. With two out in the eighth, Ralph Garr singled, stole second and tallied the tie-breaking run on a single by Dusty Baker. Evans homered for an insurance marker in the ninth.

Giants 1, Dodgers 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Steve Stone, who had lost four straight decisions this season and 11 in a row over two years, pitched the Giants to a 1-0 victory over the Dodgers in a duel with Claude Osteen. The Giants collected only three hits off Osteen but scored in the second inning on a walk to Chris Speier, infield out by Bernie Williams and single by Garry Maddox.

Expos 4, Phillies 1 at Montreal (night game):
Carl Morton allowed only one hit and pitched the Expos to a 4-1 victory over the Phillies. Mike Anderson tripled for the Phillies' hit in the third inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Denny Doyle. Hector Torres and Bob Bailey homered for the Expos.

Astros 4, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
After giving up a two-run homer by Leron Lee in the first inning, Don Wilson bore down and pitched the Astros to a 4-2 victory over the Padres. Lee May tied the score with a two-run homer in the fourth. A double by Johnny Edwards, single by Bob Watson, sacrifice fly by Doug Rader and single by Tommy Helms added the winning margin in the sixth.

Pirates 9, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (night game):
The Pirates erupted for five runs in the 14th inning to defeat the Cardinals, 9-4, in a three hour, 58-minute marathon. Richie Hebner walked, took third on a single by Manny Sanguillen and scored the tie-break-ing run when Joe Torre drew an error throwing to the plate on a grounder by Gene Alley. Dave Cash followed with a single, scoring Sanguillen and Alley. After a single by Roberto Clemente and pass to Willie Stargell loaded the bases, Al Oliver batted in the last two tallies with a single.
