Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 2, Orioles 1 at Boston (night game):
With the help of the first triple play by the Red Sox since July 15, 1967, Marty Pattin beat the Orioles, 2-1, for his first victory of the season. In the fourth inning, after Terry Crowley singled and Don Baylor walked for the Orioles, Elrod Hendricks lined to Duane Josephson, who stepped on first base to double Baylor and threw to Luis Aparicio at second in time to catch Crowley off the bag for the third out.

Royals 5, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Aided by three unearned runs, the Royals defeated the Angels, 5-2. After two errors on one play by Rudy May allowed a pair of tainted tallies in the first inning, Paul Schaal homered for the Royals in the second. A passed ball led to another unearned run in the seventh and Freddie Patek added the Royals' final marker with a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Brewers 2, Tigers 0 at Detroit (night game):
Mickey Lolich's mastery of the Brewers came to an end when Skip Lockwood posted his first victory of the season and Ellie Rodriguez hit his first homer of the year to defeat the Tigers, 2-0. Lolich had beaten the Brewers seven straight times. However, the veteran lefthander received no scoring support from his teammates and wound up the loser when Mike Ferraro doubled and Rodriguez hit his homer in the fourth inning.

Twins 6, Rangers 5 at Minnesota (night game):
A double by Cesar Tovar, sacrifice by Danny Thompson and squeeze bunt by Rod Carew produced the Twins' winning run in the seventh inning of a 6-5 victory over the Rangers. Don Mincher fielded Carew's bunt but had no chance for a play at the plate and had to settle for retiring the batter at first base.

Yankees 2, Indians 0 at New York (day game):
Fritz Peterson scattered seven hits to post his first shutout of the season and Roy White smashed a two-run homer to give the Yankees a 2-0 victory over the Indians.

Mets 3, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
Willie Mays came through with his third game-winning hit since joining the Mets when the 41-year-old superstar drove in Wayne Garrett with a two-out single in the 14th inning to beat the Cubs, 3-2. Garrett singled and Jim Beauchamp drew a pass as a pinch-hitter for Tug McGraw before Wondrous Willie came to the plate. Carmen Fanzone batted in the Cubs' runs with a double in the sixth inning. After Duffy Dyer cut the deficit with a homer in the eighth, the Mets tied the score in the ninth when Rusty Staub doubled and Cleon Jones singled for his first hit in 19 at bats.

Cardinals 4, Pirates 2 at St. Louis (day game):
After losing his first five decisions of the season, Bob Gibson entered the Cardinals' winning column with a seven-hit, 10-strikeout performance to beat the Pirates, 4-2. Lou Brock, who singled twice off Dock Ellis and stole second on each occassion, scored the first two Cardinal runs. Ted Sizemore hit a homer in the fifth inning and singles by Ted Simmons and Dal Maxvill, around an error, added an insurance run in the sixth.
