Orioles 2, Indians 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Returning to action after missing two starts because of back trouble, Mike Cuellar pitched the Orioles to a 2-0 victory over the Indians. Cuellar yielded four hits. Milt Wilcox was the loser, although giving up only two hits in seven innings on the mound. The Orioles scored initially in the second on a triple by Paul Blair and sacrifice fly by Boog Powell. Bobby Grich and Terry Crowley walked in the third. Grich advanced to third after the catch on a long fly by Don Baylor and scored on a sacrifice fly by Blair.
Red Sox 5, Brewers 4 at Boston (night game):
After blowing a 4-0 lead, the Red Sox came back with a run in the eighth inning to defeat the Brewers, 5-4. Rico Petrocelli opened the eighth with a single and yielded the paths to pinch-runner John Kennedy, who scored on a sacrifice bunt by Rick Miller and double by Carlton Fisk.
Angels 10, Royals 5 at California (night game):
The Royals left 17 men on base in losing to the Angels, 10-5. After failing three times to score with the bases loaded, the Royals finally erupted for five runs in the eighth inning on six hits and a walk. However, the Angels already had a comfortable lead by that time with an attack that included a two-run homer by Andy Kosco and two-run single by Ken Berry. After the Royals had their only scoring stanza, the Angels added their final pair in the eighth on a bases-loaded single by Bob Oliver.
Twins 7, Rangers 0 at Minnesota (night game):
Bert Blyleven doled out five hits and pitched the Twins to a 7-0 victory over the Rangers. Rod Carew drove in three runs with two singles and a grounder.
Tigers 8, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
Tony Taylor, who had a perfect night at the plate with three hits and two walks, scored three of the Tigers' runs in an 8-2 victory over the Yankees. Al Kaline batted in two tallies with a single in the seventh and Tom Haller drove in two with a single in the ninth when the Tigers iced their victory with four unearned runs off Lindy McDaniel.
A's 4, White Sox 2 at Oakland (night game):
In a duel of lefthanders, Ken Holtzman outpitched Wilbur Wood as the Athletics gained a 4-2 victory over the White Sox, who were stopped on their six-game winning streak. Reggie Jackson homered for the A's in the first inning, but the White Sox went ahead, 2-1, before Wood gave up two runs in the seventh on a walk to Dave Duncan, double by Mike Epstein and single by Larry Brown. Jackson and Sal Bando singled and Duncan hit a sacrifice fly for the final tally in the eighth.
Braves 9, Giants 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Juan Marichal, who had not won since opening day, was handed his eighth straight defeat when the Braves beat the Giants, 9-4. The Braves' attack on Marichal, who was kayoed in the fourth inning, included Hank Aaron's seventh homer of the season and 646th of his major league career. Garry Maddox hit his first with the Giants.
Cubs 5, Expos 3 at Chicago (day game):
Carmen Fanzone batted in one run with an infield out in the first inning and drove in two more with a single in the fifth to lead the Cubs to a 5-3 victory over the Expos. Jack Aker, making his first appearance with the Cubs after coming over from the Yankees, relieved Juan Pizarro in the eighth and received credit for a save.
Reds 4, Padres 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
The shutout streak of Fred Norman, who had pitched three in a row, was broken by the Reds, who turned the tables with Gary Nolan and blanked the Padres, 4-0. Joe Morgan, the Reds' second batter in the game, snapped Norman's string with a homer. The Reds added a run in the fourth and chased Norman when Johnny Bench batted in the final two tallies with a bases-loaded single in the fifth.
Astros 5, Dodgers 3 at Houston (night game):
Pitching the sixth straight compete game to the credit of the Astros' staff, Dave Roberts yielded only five hits and beat the Dodgers, 5-3. Jim Wynn, who walked in the seventh inning, stole his third base of the game and scored on a single by Doug Rader to break a 3-3 tie. A double by Jack Hiatt, sacrifice by Roberts and safe bunt by Roger Metzger added a tally in the eighth. Jerry Reuss, Larry Dierker, Tom Griffin, Ken Forsch and Don Wilson pitched complete games before Roberts also turned the trick.
Pirates 6, Phillies 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Nelson Briles turned in his first complete game of the season and pitched the Pirates to a 6-4 victory over the Phillies, who went down to their 10th straight defeat. The Pirates broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning when Jose Pagan singled, Bob Robertson walked and Gene Alley singled. A triple by Dave Cash and single by Roberto Clemente added an extra run in the eighth.
Cardinals 6, Mets 2 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals, who took advantage of Tom Seaver's wildness, scored three runs in the first inning and later added three more on two homers to defeat the Mets, 6-2. The victory was the Cards' first over Seaver since September 11, 1970, after four straight losses to the Mets' ace last season. A walk to Ted Sizemore, single by Matty Alou and forceout by Joe Torre produced the Cardinals' initial run. After two more passes loaded the bases, Luis Melendez drove in two runs with a single. Torre homered in the fifth and doubled ahead of another homer by Ted Simmons in the seventh.
