The Angels then added what proved to he their deciding margin against Jim Rooker in the eighth. With one out in the fifth inning, Mickey Stanley walked and raced to third on a wild pitch by Mel Stottlemyre. Brinkman then laid down his bunt to score Stanley. After a sacrifice by Joe Coleman, Brinkman scored what proved to be the winning run on a single by Dick McAuliffe.
