Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Indians 1 at Baltimore (day game):
In addition to pitching a four-hitter, Jim Palmer cracked a double and two singles as the Orioles defeated the Indians, 5-1. Palmer actually decided his own game, driving in the Orioles' first two runs with his double in the second inning.

Red Sox 4, Brewers 1 at Boston (day game):
Playing under coach Roy McMillan after Dave Bristol was fired as manager, the Brewers lost to the Red Sox, 9-1. Carlton Fisk ruined the day for McMillan, hitting a homer in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie and then driving in two more runs with a double in the eighth.

Angels 4, Royals 2 at California (day game):
Clyde Wright was forced out of action with a reinjured ankle in the seventh inning, but before departing the Angels' lefthander allowed only four hits and smashed a homer and single in a 4-2 victory over the Royals. Leroy Stanton drove in two of the Angels' runs with a sacrifice fly and double. Wright hit his homer in the fifth and hurt himself running the bases after his single in the seventh.

Twins 7, Rangers 2 at Minnesota (day game):
Harmon Killebrew hit a grand-slam homer in the third inning and drove in another run with a double in the seventh to power the Twins to a 7-2 victory over the Rangers. Rick Renick also homered for the Twins' first run in the third before Killebrew's clout later in the same stanza.

Tigers 5, Yankees 4 at New York (day game):
The relief pitching of Chuck Seelbach, who allowed only four hits in 6 2/3 innings, enabled the Tigers to defeat the Yankees, 5-4. Mickey Stanley drove in three runs for the Tigers, the first two with grounders. Then, in the seventh, after Paul Jata doubled, Stanley singled to plate what proved to be the deciding marker.

A's 5, White Sox 4 at Oakland (day game):
Making his first start of the season, Vida Blue allowed only one hit in five innings, but the Athletics then had to struggle into overtime before beating the White Sox, 5-4, on a two-run homer by George Hendrick in the 10th. Dick Allen singled in the third for the only hit off Blue before the southpaw departed for a pinch-hitter. The A's erupted for three runs in the sixth, but the White Sox picked up a tally in the eighth and rallied to tie the score in the ninth with a walk and singles by Carlos May, Tom Egan and Rich Morales. In the 10th, Jay Johnstone drove in a run with a single to send the White Sox ahead, but with two out in the A's half, Mike Hegan singled and Hendrick won the game with his first major league homer.

[DH] Giants 3, Braves 2 (day game) / Braves 7, Giants 6 at Atlanta (day game):
Two passes with the bases loaded enabled the Giants to win the first game of a doubleheader, 3-2, but the Braves came back to take the nightcap in 11 innings, 7-6. Steve Stone, who pitched the lidlifter for the Giants, allowed only four hits. However, a homer by Ralph Garr in the third and an unearned run in the sixth gave the Braves a 2-1 lead going into the seventh when the Giants filled the sacks against Ron Schueler and scored the tying and winning tallies on walks to Tito Fuentes and Ed Goodson. In the nightcap, the Braves loaded the bases in the 11th on a double by Rico Carty, single by Garr and intentional pass to Hank Aaron. Rico Carty and Earl Williams then grounded into successive forceouts at the plate before Dusty Baker singled to drive in the winning run.

Expos 7, Cubs 5 at Chicago (day game):
The Expos, who had lost 13 straight games on the road, snapped their traveling jinx with a 7-5 victory over the Cubs. The Expos broke a 5-5 tie after Tim Foli singled in the eighth inning. Mike Marshall tapped to Dan McGinn, who tossed to second base too late to force Foli. Don Kessinger, trying to get Marshall at first, threw wildly and Foli raced home on the error to put the Expos ahead. An insurance run followed in the ninth when Bob Bailey singled, stole second and scored on a single by Ken Singleton.

Padres 5, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
The Padres ended a six-game losing streak by defeating the Reds, 5-2, behind the four-hit hurling of Steve Arlin. After the Padres scored on a triple by Derrel Thomas and single by Garry Jestadt in the first inning, the Reds took a 2-1 lead on four walks in the second and triples by Johnny Bench and Joe Hague in the third. Leron Lee tied the game with a homer in the fourth. Nate Colbert singled in the sixth and scored when Bobby Tolan misplayed a drive by Johnny Jeter for a three-base error. Bob Barton laid down a squeeze bunt to plate Jeter. Colbert wound up the scoring with a homer in the seventh.

Dodgers 6, Astros 5 at Houston (day game):
Errors by Bobby Fenwick and Lee May allowed the Dodgers to score a run without the benefit of a hit in the 11th inning to defeat the Astros, 6-5. Bill Russell led off by hitting a grounder to Fenwick and was safe on the sub second baseman's wild throw. After a sacrifice by Wes Parker and infield out by Steve Garvey, Bobby Valentine hit a grounder to May and when the Astros' first baseman failed to come up with the ball, Russell trotted home on the error.

Pirates 6, Phillies 5 at Pittsburgh (day game):
After failing to hold a 4-1 lead, the Pirates rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Phillies, 6-5. Roberto Clemente, appearing as a pinch-hitter, walked to open the stanza. Gene Alley bunted and was safe on a throwing error by Joe Hoerner. Dave Cash followed with a single, Clemente scoring. After a safe bunt by Gene Clines loaded the bases, Al Oliver smashed a single to drive in the winning run.

Cardinals 8, Mets 3 at St. Louis (day game):
Ending his personal three-game losing streak, Reggie Cleveland pitched the Cardinals to an 8-3 victory over the Mets. Cleveland also collected three of the Cardinals' 16 hits and drove in two runs. John Milner homered for the Mets' runs with two men on base in the ninth inning.
