Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 6, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Posting his first shutout of the season, Ray Culp gave up only three hits and pitched the Red Sox to a 6-0 victory over the Orioles. The Red Sox scored three unearned runs in the second inning as the result of an error by Brooks Robinson and chalked up their other tallies on homers by Carlton Fisk and Tommy Harper in the fourth.

Angels 6, White Sox 0 at California (night game):
Nolan Ryan pitched a seven-hit shutout and Bob Oliver drove in four runs as the Angels defeated the White Sox, 6-0. Oliver homered with two men on base in the first inning and added his other RBI with a single in the fourth.

Brewers 3, Yankees 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Marking the debut of Del Crandall as new manager, Skip Lockwood held the Yankees to one hit and pitched the Brewers to a 3-1 victory. The Yankees scored in the sixth inning on two walks and a single by Rusty Torres for their only hit.

Twins 3, Royals 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Phil Roof hit his first two homers of the season to enable the Twins to defeat the Royals, 3-2. After the catcher's first blow broke a 1-1 tie in the second inning, Steve Hovley hit his first homer of the season for the Royals to forge a new deadlock in the third. Roof then homered again for the winning run in the fourth.

Rangers 3, A's 2 at Texas (night game):
Rich Hand yielded only three hits in 8 1/3 innings and gained his first victory of the season when the Rangers defeated the Athletics, 3-2. Hand was lifted after Sal Bando singled in the ninth. Gene Tenace also singled off reliever Paul Lindblad, but Horacio Pina came in and retired George Hendrick and Dave Duncan to end the game. The Rangers, in stopping the A's on their five-game winning streak, scored the deciding run in the eighth inning. Ken Suarez singled and gave way on the paths to Dave Nelson, who took second on a sacrifice by Hand, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Toby Harrah.

Reds 9, Astros 5 at Houston (night game):
Batting in four runs, Johnny Bench led the Reds to a 9-5 victory over the Astros. Bench hit an inside-the-park homer in the second inning, drove in a run with a single in the sixth and capped his performance with a two-run drive over the fence in the ninth.

Mets 7, Phillies 0 at New York (night game):
Still undefeated, Jon Matlack posted his sixth straight victory and Rusty Staub had a perfect night at bat with two doubles and two singles as the Mets beat the Phillies, 7-0. Matlack allowed three hits. Staub drove in four runs.
