Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 4, White Sox 3 at California (night game):
An error by Dick Allen enabled the Angels to score a run in the ninth inning to defeat the White Sox, 4-3. With two away in the ninth, Sandy Alomar singled. When Allen muffed the throw to first base on an attempted pickoff play, Alomar raced to third. The White Sox then walked Mickey Rivers and Vada Pinson to load the bases, but Bob Oliver wrecked the strategy with a single to drive in Alomar.

Tigers 5, Indians 4 at Cleveland (night game):
After a tremendous relief performance by Fred Scherman in the ninth inning, the Tigers pushed over the tie-breaking run in the 10th to gain a 5-4 victory over the Indians, who went down to their seventh straight defeat. After the Indians scored twice in the ninth and had the bases loaded with none out, Scherman retired Del Unser on a popup, Jerry Moses on strikes and Chris Chambliss on a liner. In the 10th, Bill Freehan hit a pinch-single and advanced on a sacrifice. Tony Taylor was hit by a pitch and Mickey Stanley walked to load the bases. Ed Brinkman then hit a sacrifice fly to plate the winning run.

Yankees 5, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee (night game):
John Ellis and Gene Michael each drove in two runs with singles in the first inning and Roy White smashed a homer in the third to give the Yankees a 5-4 victory over the Brewers.

Twins 3, Royals 2 at Minnesota (night game):
A homer by Eric Soderholm with two men on base in the sixth inning carried the Twins to a 3-2 victory over the Royals. Rod Carew and Harmon Killebrew singled ahead of Soderholm's blow.

A's 5, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Reggie Jackson homered for the Athletics in the first inning, but that was their only hit until erupting in the sixth to defeat the Rangers, 5-1. Bert Campaneris doubled in the sixth, Joe Rudi singled and Jackson walked to load the bases and three runs followed on a sacrifice fly by Sal Bando and singles by Mike Epstein and Ollie Brown. In the seventh, when the A's added an unearned run, Jackson was hit on the jaw by a pitch and forced out of the game.

Braves 5, Padres 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Hank Aaron hit the 648th homer of his major league career, tying Willie Mays for second place on the all-time list, to account for the Braves' first run in a 5-4 victory over the Padres. Aaron's homer was his ninth of the season. The Braves, who were held to five hits, scored their deciding run without the benefit of a safety in the eighth inning on two walks, a sacrifice bunt by Marty Perez and sacrifice fly by Ron Reed.

Cardinals 1, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
Bob Gibson's best game of the season saw the Cardinals' righthander beat the Cubs, 1-0, in a duel with Fergie Jenkins. Gibson allowed only three hits. Jenkins gave up eight and yielded a run in the fifth inning on a single by Dal Maxvill, sacrifice by Gibson and single by Lou Brock.

Reds 12, Astros 4 at Houston (night game):
A grand-slam homer by George Foster, who went into the game batting only .167, helped power the Reds to a 12-4 victory over the Astros. The Reds scored in two six-run bursts. In the third inning, Joe Morgan singled home the first run, took second on the throw and scored on a single by Bobby Tolan. Johnny Bench doubled, Tolan stopping at third. Tony Perez then was passed intentionally to set the stage for Foster's slam. When the Reds scored their other six runs in the eighth, Johnny Bench homered with two men on base.

Expos 3, Pirates 2 at Montreal (night game):
Consecutive singles by Ken Singleton, Terry Humphrey and Tim Foli in the sixth inning produced the run that enabled the Expos to defeat the Pirates, 3-2. Ernie McAnally, who gave up five hits including a homer by Willie Stargell, gained his first victory of the season.

Dodgers 5, Giants 4 at San Francisco (day game):
The Dodgers, after failing to hold a 4-1 lead, came back with a run in the 11th inning on a walk to Willie Davis and triple by Manny Mota to defeat the Giants, 5-4.
