Red Sox 7, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Continuing his career mastery, Sonny Siebert beat the Orioles for the 16th time in 20 decisions as the Red Sox gained a a 7-1 victory. Rico Petrocelli batted in two runs for the Red Sox with a bases-loaded single in the first inning and Carlton Fisk hit a homer for two more runs in the second.
Indians 1, Tigers 0 at Cleveland (night game):
Snapping the Indians' seven-game losing streak, Gaylord Perry posted his third shutout of the season and beat the Tigers, 1-0, in a duel with Joe Coleman. Perry gave up seven hits. The Indians collected only three off Coleman in his seven innings on the mound but scored in the second on a walk to Eddie Leon, sacrifice by Perry and single by Tommy McCraw.
Brewers 9, Yankees 8 at Milwaukee (day game):
Four walks issued by Jim Roland in the 12th inning forced a run home and handed the Brewers a 9-8 victory over the Yankees. Before the denouement, the Brewers had homers by George Scott, Billy Conigliaro, Joe Lahoud and John Felske, while Rusty Torres and Bobby Murcer hit round-trippers for the Yankees, Murcer's blow coming in the ninth to tie the score and send the game into overtime.
Royals 5, Twins 3 at Minnesota (day game):
Powered by three homers, the Royals defeated the Twins, 5-3. The Twins had a homer by Eric Soderholm with a man on base in the second inning and added another run in the fifth before the Royals tied the score with round-trippers by Lou Piniella and Ed Kirkpatrick in the sixth, Piniella's poke coming with one aboard. With two out in the eighth, Cookie Rojas singled for the Royals and Richie Scheinblum delivered a pinch-homer for the game-winning blow.
Cubs 7, Cardinals 3 at Chicago (day game):
A six-run outburst in the first inning was more than enough for the Cubs to defeat the Cardinals, 7-3. The Cubs sent 11 men to bat and their six hits included a triple by Ron Santo and doubles by Jim Hickman and J.C. Martin. Billy Williams added a homer for the Cubs' final run in the second.
Reds 10, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
Coming to bat as a pinch-hitter, Hal McRae walloped a grand-slam homer in the sixth inning to spark the Reds to a 10-3 victory over the Astros. Homers by Cesar Cedeno and Doug Rader helped the Astros take a 3-0 lead before the Reds counted twice in the fifth. Johnny Bench and Tony Perez singled in the sixth. Bench was thrown out at the plate on a grounder by Denis Menke, but Dave Concepcion walked to load the bases before McRae batted for Ed Sprague. Bench hit his fourth homer in three games in the seventh and Perez rapped a round-tripper with a man on base in the ninth.
Mets 6, Phillies 1 at New York (night game):
Rusty Staub hit a three-run homer in the first inning to start the Mets off to an 8-1 victory over the Phillies. Staub's smash followed a double by Bud Harrelson, pass to Jim Fregosi and forceout by Tommie Agee. The Mets went on to load the bases on two walks around a double by John Milner and added another run on a sacrifice fly by Jerry Grote. Milner collected two more hits in the game, including a homer. Greg Luzinski homered for the Phillies' run.
Giants 5, Dodgers 2 at San Francisco (night game):
The Dodgers, who had won 10 straight games at Candlestick Park since May 15, 1971, were stopped on their streak by Steve Stone, who pitched the Giants to a 5-2 victory. The Giants were held hitless by Bill Singer until the fourth inning when Tito Fuentes and Ed Goodson singled. After a forceout by Dave Kingman, Chris Speier hit a sacrifice fly. Ken Henderson singled, sending Kingman to third and took second himself when the bag was left uncovered. Garry Maddox then drove in both runners with a single. The Giants clinched the verdict with two more runs in the sixth.
