Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 5, A's 1 at Baltimore (night game):
A crowd of 32,278, Baltimore's second largest of the season, saw the Orioles beat Vida Blue and post a 5-1 victory over the Athletics. Blue gave up only four hits in five innings, but all were productive. In the second, Don Baylor singled, stole second and scored on a single by Bobby Grich. Paul Blair homered in the fourth. Blue issued three passes to load the bases in the fifth and Blair took advantage of the situation to drive in two runs with a double.
White Sox 6, Yankees 1 at Chicago (night game):
Wilbur Wood gave up eight hits, all in the first five innings, but the southpaw profited from three double plays and pitched the White Sox to a 6-1 victory over the Yankees. Rusty Torres homered in the fourth for the Yankees' run. The White Sox had a two-run double by Dick Allen and two-run homers by Rick Reichardt and Bill Melton.
Angels 4, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Ken McMullen drove in three runs in the fourth inning with his first homer of the season and then scored on a wild pitch in the eighth to bring the Angels a 4-3 victory over the the Indians.
Tigers 5, Twins 4 at Detroit (day game):
Although victory escaped Mickey Lolich, the Tigers were able to beat the Twins, 5-4, when Mickey Stanley walked in the 10th inning and scored on a double by Gates Brown. Lolich had a 4-3 lead going into the ninth and was removed when Bobby Darwin doubled for the Twins' fourth hit of the game. Chuck Seelbach relieved and retired the next two batters. When Fred Scherman was brought in to pitch to Rich Reese, the Twins switched to George Mitterwald, who singled to drive in the tying run.
Royals 9, Red Sox 1 at Kansas City (night game):
In addition to pitching a five-hitter, Dick Drago knocked in two tie-breaking runs with a single in the fifth inning to send the Royals on their way to a 9-1 victory over the Red Sox. After Drago's hit put the Royals ahead, 3-1, Ed Kirkpatrick batted in two more runs with a triple in the same stanza and scored himself on a double by Cookie Rojas.
Brewers 7, Rangers 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
After building up a 7-0 lead, the Brewers hung on to defeat the Rangers, 7-5. Three of the Brewers' runs scored on a homer by Paul Ratliff in the first inning. Jim Lonborg yielded only two hits until the sixth when the Rangers erupted for all their runs. An error by Lonborg, singles by Jeff Burroughs and Elliott Maddox and a double by Dave Nelson accounted for the first three runs in the rally. After walking Dick Billings, Lonborg gave way to Frank Linzy, who yielded a single by Ted Ford and sacrifice fly by Dalton Jones for two more tallies. However, other than Ford's single, Linzy gave up no hits in finishing the game and received credit for his first save of the season.
Dodgers 8, Cardinals 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Led by Bill Buckner, who collected four singles in five trips, the Dodgers defeated the Cardinals, 8-3. Buckner scored three times. Willie Crawford and Manny Mota each drove in two runs.
Astros 7, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
Snapping a six-game losing streak, the Astros defeated the Expos, 7-1, behind the pitching of Larry Dierker, who fanned seven to go over the 1,000 mark in strikeouts for his major league career. Lee May, Cesar Cedeno and Bob Watson backed Dierker with homers.

Phil Niekro allowed only three hits -- all by John Milner -- and pitched the Braves to a 6-1 victory over the Mets. Milner accounted for the Mets' run with a homer in the ninth inning. Rico Carty and Darrell Evans homered for the Braves, Carty's blow coming with two men on base. A crowd of 42,575 turned out to watch the first meeting of Willie Mays and Hank Aaron since Willie's acquisition by the Mets. Both superstars, who are tied for second place on the all-time homer list with 648 apiece, went hitless.
Reds 6, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Continuing his hot slugging, Johnny Bench smashed two homers for the Reds, his second coming with two men on base in the 17th inning to defeat the Phillies, 6-3. Bench's first homer of the game came in the seventh to tie the score at 1-1. The Reds broke the deadlock in the 16th on a double by Tony Perez and single by Cesar Geronimo, but the Phillies pulled even in their half when an error led to a run on a single by Tommy Hutton. In the 17th, Don Gullett, who pitched the last five frames and allowed only four hits, opened with a single and scored the tie-breaking run on singles by Joe Morgan and Bobby Tolan. Bench then bashed his second homer of the game to provide the winning margin as the Phillies got one run back in their half on a homer by Mike Ryan.
Cubs 2, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
An error by catcher Bob Barton, who dropped a throw to the plate, enabled Jose Cardenal to score for the Cubs in the 10th inning to defeat the Padres. 2-1. Jim Hickman walked in the overtime frame and was forced on Cardenal's attempted sacrifice. After Paul Popovich fouled out, Cardenal stole second. Ken Rudolph followed with a single to left field. Jerry Morales made a perfect throw to the plate in time to catch Cardenal, but Barton bobbled the ball.
Giants 7, Pirates 4 at San Francisco (night game):
